@@JH-pv6rd Are you implying Europe doesn't have a weapon industry? While it's being strangled by export restrictions it still holds a quarter of international weapon trade. The reasons for buying US weapons are solely political. If the US wants to opt out of their position of guaranteeing security for Europe - a position they chose, because it benefitted them greatly over the years - than there is no reason why they should continue reaping the benefits from it.
The result would be greatly diminished US influence in Europe (no more applying sanctions beneficial for the US), programs like the F35 would no longer be feasible because there are not enough customers, and there would probably be soon a few more nuclear powers on the planet. Usually US presidents were smart enough to not want that.

Is Trump gonna aid Ukraine if we pay the 2%!? That's my question. Otherwise we need that money for weapons manufacturing and a European army. It would be very useless to pay 2% and then let Russia annex European territory.
The 21 million refugees from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq we pay for in Europe caused by a American war that started by lying to the UN about WMD's are not counted as aid or the 2% either. In comparison the US has taken 3.5 million refugees since 1975. A shocking low amount. You need to take at least half of those 21 million refugees for me to even consider putting my tax money into buying US weapons for the 2%. There's also 6 million Ukrainian refugees on top of the 21 million. We will take those, don't worry.
The US weapons manufacturers had a new record of sales to foreign nations in 2023 a rise of 16% to the amount of 238 billion. 238 billion minus 80 billion for Ukraine is 158 billion of profit. So we need a 50% discount on US weapons too in Europe to get to 2%.

You own a security company. Someone reaches out to you for your services, they feel at danger with gangs and homeless people in their shopping center. You run numbers, and mutually agree on a appropriate charge it'll cost them for you to keep them safe. Then they stop paying you. You're employee who handles the money (past presidents) do nothing. You've now seen the balance they owe for you to protect them for years for free. They owe an extraordinary amount. You're not even seeking past payment, just recent and current delinquent payments....Why don't you just keep doing it. Why not?! ---That's what you're saying. It's pathetic, stupid, and hurts your employees who now get paid less or see smaller bonuses because you're down thousands from this "job" that's costing you money.
They joined NATO - there are rules. You can't just join, get everything you want, and ignore the agreement set in place.
Yeah, I'd fucking say the same thing Trump is. ME & YOU (if you pay taxes) have our income taken from us for them to take advantage of us....for DECADES! Our taxes get raised so we pay for more war and others to take advantage like this. 25%-35% of our income is going to this BS. So instead of paying essentials, now millions of us are trying our best to not be - each month.

It's not the fault of Europeans the 238 billion profit does not go to the US people by the way. You need to sort that out internally. Your tax money go to US weapons manufacturers. If every member pays 2% in Europe that money doesn't go to the US taxpayer. It goes to weapons manufacturers.

It's not the fault of Europeans the 238 billion profit does not go to the US people by the way. You need to sort that out internally. Your tax money go to US weapons manufacturers. If every member pays 2% in Europe that money doesn't go to the US taxpayer. It goes to weapons manufacturers.

NATO defense isn't conditional on paying. Never was. If a member is too awful in spending countries may agree to kick them out and anyone may leave (which may be Trumps big idea here).
There's so many aspects to this. For example consider PPP. Some pay less for more soldiers and very similar equipment. While the US is half of NATO spending (which is not too far off the population proportion) in terms of soldiers NATO is 2/3rds in Europe (not counting US deployments in Europe).
Not saying that the 2% goal shouldn't be met. It's agreed, it should be met. And in the latest summit they agreed that more than 2% is needed. But this reaction is completely crazy especially in that context of corrections. Every president since Bush at least has gone on and on about NATO spending. And it's improved slowly. But now that we've seen European defense spending is booming, everyone is clearly better aligned now. Why would you openly admit you'll betray your international commitments now? This claim made far more sense during the first Trump.
This is Trump betraying US geopolitical interests in favor of domestic polticial points in my eyes. It makes no sense any other way.
The US defense spending isn't just defense in the naive way either. It's also spending on its interests that aren't under the NATO mission. Like Taiwan, many of the middle east engagements, Israel (though the relation with NATO is much closer there, and you see cooperation adjacent to Israel aid, Israel isn't in NATO). The US also sees huge benefits from the current international order far beyond other NATO members.
To be fair technically Israel is more like a self imposed obligation due to the governments commitment to the Jewish minority in the US than a geopolitical interest. So it doesn't "serve" the US in that way. Israel is choosing an incredibly poor time for its invasion of Gaza and it's complicated the ongoing 'slow boiling' Iran conflict at a bad time. Which is a US interest.
The Ukraine war is not a US interest directly. It's a NATO interest and it's costly for a major rival block to the US, Russia/China/Iran.

The thing trump forget to say is that usa is also the biggest army producters and sellers of theses countries.
So they pay also for their defense.

The US strategy should be to increase US Defence footprint across NATO and especially in member countries that don't achieve the 2% of GDP on defence. This strengthens US and makes NATO even more dependent on the US. The US has many other means (economic and trade) to recover the additional contribution it makes to NATO. Some recent initiatives are a very good example where EU Companies are investing $billions in the US rather than in EU to access the incentives being offered. Perhaps majority of the human beings don't think medium to long term or strategically on a broad scale. Majority of political elite don't either. That is why they are easily manipulated.

It’s called being in an alliance. Everyone has their own interests but still share some common goals. No one is “superior” over others- (well, some are certainly more influential that’s for sure).

It's not the fault of Europeans the 238 billion profit does not go to the US people by the way. You need to sort that out internally. Your tax money go to US weapons manufacturers. If every member pays 2% in Europe that money doesn't go to the US taxpayer. It goes to weapons manufacturers.

    1) Yes, NATO countries should pay their fair share (it’s *not* mandatory, it’s a “guideline,” but still)
    2) *When we’re talking about “fair share” we’re talking about improving their own militaries.* I’ve met way too many people who think NATO has their own kind of military that the US just funds most of. That’s not how it works- it’s every country promising/trying to use 2% of their GDP for their *own* militaries in case of an attack on an ally. (Edit: They may train together, but they’re not solely headed by NATO)
    3) A European country has never told another fellow NATO ally this. Even to the ones that contribute insanely minimally. It’s pure disgrace and disgusting to threaten allies like this. Allies that came to the US’s aid *because they follow Article V and aid their allies*
Not every country has anywhere near the amount of money the US does. It’s insane to expect some country like Estonia to produce anything significant compared to the US. (The US just dwarfs most of those smaller nations).
