In general, I'd definitely recommend the bat-fandom (although none of the characters are canonically ace so you won't find rep in a lot of the fics). There's a general standard of quality in the fics, and the fandom is big enough that there's sufficient variety to suit most people's tastes. Know My Name was the best book I read last year. It was so well written and broke my heart. And, sadly enough, many of us can relate to it since sexual assault/harassment/molestation/rape is so prevalent which is sickening. I hope she will put out more books so we can support our sister!

I think you’d love Good Morning, Monster. It has a weird tittle, but it’s incredible, I listened to it on Scribd and it was great. 5 stories of deeply traumatized people who made it through, told by the therapist who helped them along. Every time she concluded the story on a patient, I immediately missed them, but 2 seconds later was completely invested on the next one.

The best books I read this year were Evelyn Hugo, The Secret History, We are Okay, Ari Dante and My Dark Vanessa. Also the Dosab trilogy. Ugh I actually had so many good reads. (Incidentally Time War was on my lowest rated list 💀)
Fully agree with you on “Know My Name”. I sometimes had visceral, physical reactions to it, so I that had to stop and get up for a bit before continuing to read it. My favorite fiction book this year was “the mountain sings” by Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai. The beauty of Vietnamese folk poetry mixed with a big family saga and brutal honest commentary of the horrors of wars between ideologies (communism, capitalism and fascism) which leaves no “winners” really taught me a lot. I keep thinking about this book.
Know My Name is my absolute favorite book of the year as well! She's an AMAZING writer and It's probably the best, and most important non-fiction book i've ever read.

i read little fires everywhere around the same time you read it and i remember how i started it around 11PM and didn't hit the pause button once. my eyes were red with sleep when the book ended lmfao. i hadn't expected to like it that much as well.
I loved This Is How You Lose The Time War, it's so beautiful, like reading poetry. I've recommended it to people and said not to worry about making total sense out of it, because I didn't feel like the detail was really the point. I reread it a few months later and understood it better that time. That quote about killing the poets was one of my favourites too, brutally romantic 💕😄
I loved "This is how you lose the Time War." I feel that people who don't get it are more interested in the science in sci-fi, like they want to know about how the war started, how they time travel how each of their future's tech works etc. This book the main thing was the emotions and some just don't expect that from sci-fi and thus miss it.
I watched your first review of One to Watch and took your suggestion to read it with a friend; my friend and I read it over winter break and we zoomed through it in two days!! I've finished "maybe you should talk to someone" a couple of days ago and I loved it so much!!! I have nobody to talk to about books, so I'll just write here and pretend someone is reading. This book made me laugh and cry, and it has been a while since I've cried reading a book. **spoiler alert** you might think I've cried reading about Julie, but actually it was Rita's story that made me cry. I'm 24, Rita was 69, yet somehow I could feel her misery, and that is depressing as fuck. Also, I love the part where the author said that when her patients say things like "if this didn't happen then I'd be happy" or something and she (the therapist) says "and if the queen had balls, she'd be the king" 😂

For me what was interesting was that in Little Fires Everywhere, esp. reading the book, there never seemed to be any explicit mention that the Warrens were black. I kind of imagined them as a racially ambiguous family until the HBO rendition really emphasized/'upgraded' parts of the plotline
I picked up Know My Name after I heard you talk about it in your monthly wrap up. It had been on my tbr for a while but the quotes you shared made me realize I needed to read it. It is easily in my top five favorite books of the year. It was so good and so raw and made me think of so many things. And the writing was phenomenal. It also made me cry like four times, so thanks for that.
So when you were talking about “My Dark Vanessa,” which I’m definitely adding to my list, it reminded me of a tik tok I saw (coincidentally, where I found out about you) and this person was talking about something they learned in Psychology or Sociology. They brought up how a lot women have a kink or desire to be “dominated in bed” not like BDSM but more like just some rough play or getting roughed up, and they said it was actually theorized (I think or it might be actually a fact) that this was an evolutionary result of many women being raped or experiencing rape. So over time, women started to think they liked more rough things because it could help them mentally prepare for possible sexual assault.
I’ve been trying to find good book related content creators on CZcams for like a WHILE. Someone with genuine opinions and honest reviews and I’m so fucking siked I found this channel this year. Where you been all my life
I loved little fires. I thought it was unique how they did it in the mind of the Karen character Bc there are so many women and men to this day who think that they’re “woke” even though they do things that are clearly racist without even realizing it. In the custody battle itself, it showed that not one side is completely right. I think in order to figure out what is best for the child, they have to set their differences aside and work as a community to support this baby.
My Dark Vanessa, The Nightingale, This is How You Lose the Time War and Know My Name were AMAZING! I ended up also putting Know My Name on my best-of-the-year list. Maybe You Should Talk to Someone sounds really interesting, too!

I've finished "maybe you should talk to someone" a couple of days ago and I loved it so much!!!
I have nobody to talk to about books, so I'll just write here and pretend someone is reading.
This book made me laugh and cry, and it has been a while since I've cried reading a book.
**spoiler alert** you might think I've cried reading about Julie, but actually it was Rita's story that made me cry. I'm 24, Rita was 69, yet somehow I could feel her misery, and that is depressing as fuck.
Also, I love the part where the author said that when her patients say things like "if this didn't happen then I'd be happy" or something and she (the therapist) says "and if the queen had balls, she'd be the king" 😂
I'm actually planning to read this next! 🙈
tbh i felt for EVERY person that the author talked to and i was so surprised that i teared up at john's story!!

I'm so glad you promote library use. Booktubers just give me such an itch to buy and consume that I hate given that libraries exist and are wonderful and need support.
For me what was interesting was that in Little Fires Everywhere, esp. reading the book, there never seemed to be any explicit mention that the Warrens were black. I kind of imagined them as a racially ambiguous family until the HBO rendition really emphasized/'upgraded' parts of the plotline
tbh i always envisioned them as black or at the very least, POC!

I picked up Know My Name after I heard you talk about it in your monthly wrap up. It had been on my tbr for a while but the quotes you shared made me realize I needed to read it. It is easily in my top five favorite books of the year. It was so good and so raw and made me think of so many things. And the writing was phenomenal. It also made me cry like four times, so thanks for that.

So when you were talking about “My Dark Vanessa,” which I’m definitely adding to my list, it reminded me of a tik tok I saw (coincidentally, where I found out about you) and this person was talking about something they learned in Psychology or Sociology. They brought up how a lot women have a kink or desire to be “dominated in bed” not like BDSM but more like just some rough play or getting roughed up, and they said it was actually theorized (I think or it might be actually a fact) that this was an evolutionary result of many women being raped or experiencing rape. So over time, women started to think they liked more rough things because it could help them mentally prepare for possible sexual assault.
Shit. This is heartbreaking.

I loved little fires. I thought it was unique how they did it in the mind of the Karen character Bc there are so many women and men to this day who think that they’re “woke” even though they do things that are clearly racist without even realizing it. In the custody battle itself, it showed that not one side is completely right. I think in order to figure out what is best for the child, they have to set their differences aside and work as a community to support this baby.
