Tunisia's Star Wars filming locations: Mos Espa Slave Quarters in Ksar Ommarsia, Medenine

Today we take a walk around Ksar Ommarsia in Medenine City, southern Tunisia. This ksar, which continues to function as a pedestrian walkway, served as the filming location for the Mos Espa slave quarters street scenes in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. Amplifying the authenticity of the historic Amazigh site to create a futuristic setting, crews dressed all four of the ksar’s walls with fresh plaster and paint, added faux doors for the majority of the ghorfas (grain storage silos pictured in my film), as well as door-frame ribbing, door control panels, cooling/heating pipes and other fixtures. Crews also stationed one moisture evaporator prop in the southwest section of the narrow courtyard and covered the at stone courtyard floor with sand, to depict the desert Tatooine climate.
We also do a 1 minute room tour of the Hotel Ksour Medenine, which is a good place to stay if you want to explore Medenine's Star Wars sites.
