I'm on my second charge that I did 9 days ago and I got 40%. My first charge lasted 12 days. I wear it 24/7, with automatic heart rate monitoring & sleep assisting on, and the detection frequency of the heart rate every 1 min. Way more then your 6 days. GPS not very precise on walking/running mode sometimes and the band sometimes doesn't sync automatically with the app when I start a activity on the app... Still pretty happy so far. 😉 👌

the battery life being 6 days for you is because you set it up to always check your heart-rate 24/7.
6 days for that is actually not so bad at all - i remember my Mi Band 3 getting barely 3 days with that setting turned on (Mi Band 3 had very inefficient hardware for some reason).
if you disable that setting though you can easily jump up to at least 12 days of battery life
but you did sum it up quite right - if you already have a Mi Band 4 than there really isn't much of a reason to upgrade, but if you have a Mi Band 1, 2 or 3 than yeah it is definitely recommended to upgrade, and if you don't have a smart band at all than look no further because Xiaomi makes the best ones in the business for a fraction of what the competition asks for.

I am interested in the heart rate monitoring function. I have read that you only get good improvement on the heart rate accuracy with the NFC version, because it includes infrared sensor for it.

I’ve had the sleep tracking active the whole time but didn’t bother activating the message or call notifications. I keep the brightness set to 3 bars during the day & 2 bars at night. Plus I turned off the “Lift wrist to view” at night time. I had a 50% charge when it arrived. I’m pretty happy with it so far. And I don’t have any affiliation with Xiaomi before anyone asks... 1. The nap tracking is just a software update, if Xiaomi wish they would have provided that in previous bands via update, but then no one would buy mi band 5.
    2. Mi band 3 and 4 already had the feature where it doesn't show the HR stats when you are not wearing it.
    3. The battery timing depends on the HR frequency, how frequency the display is turned on, brightness, other features as for. I have a Mi band 4 here and I can get a battery life as low as 7 days with Hr frequency set to 10 minutes and 14 days when hr frequency set to 1 hour and other things.
I think that you are reviewing mi band series for the first time.
To be honest, this band was a let down in many aspects. I suggest waiting for Honor band 6 and then see which one to buy. I'm staying on mi band 4 which is super fine.

I know it may be a little out of context, but you can try 3rd party app.
    Mi Band Tools (USD$3.59)
    Notify for Mi Band (FREE)
What can I say? I bought the Mi Band Tools since 1st generation of Mi Band, without screen. And since I bought it, it's free for me. It was probably the best money spent on Android market. First generation Mi Band, I could make it vibrate (with choice of colours on the Mi Band flashing) for different apps, different colours. For eg, wife calls, it's pink, mom call it's red, dad call it's blue, etc. I can even filter which contact inside which app (WhatsApp/WeChat/etc.) are important that it'd vibrate my Mi Band. That's first generation.
2nd generation Mi Band, I bought it, Mi Band 2. This time, better. All the above mentioned things worked, but better. It shows phone numbers/names/etc. instead of colour.
I then bought Samsung Galaxy Watch Active (1st generation). Although it's super good, and powerful, what ticked me off was that the battery lasted me only 2 days max. Sleep tracking didn't give me much information, so I decided to subscribe to 3rd party sleep tracker "Sleep As Android", which came with Smart Alarm, and way more detail of my sleep pattern, way more accurate than the original sleep tracking from Samsung's app. But then my battery wouldn't last more than 2 days. I cannot charge my smart watch and sleep 2 nights, it simply won't work. What I had to do is, every morning, before I go to shower and brush my teeth, charge the watch, come out, eat breakfast, then wear the watch, not full charged, usually up to 70%. Then come back upstairs, wear the watch go to work. Come home with 30-40% battery left, charge the watch, go shower, eat dinner, come back up (charged up to 80-90%), wear the watch, then do my thing for the night till I go to sleep. Next day wake up, battery at around 40-50%, same routine again, charge, then brush teeth and shower, put watch back on, go to work. It was super frustrating, and the moment I gave up on it was right before MCO, the battery/charger died, right before MCO, sent in for warranty claim. Bad news, MCO, so I was without my watch. So I went shopping online, and bought the Honor Band 5.
As for Mi Band Tools, the same worked for Mi Band 3, but I didn't buy Mi Band 3. I also skipped Mi Band 4, I bought Huawei Honor Band 5. Although it has SpO2, and better tracking (especially for sleeping), it didn't have 3rd party software support. I can't do what I could with my Mi Band(1/2) just because my features available were limited by Huawei's limitations. That made me instantly regret.
I just bought Mi Band 5 last week, and I went on Google Play Store, and found that this app is still available and updated. This time, even better, more features. Everything available for Mi Band 1/2/3 that I was used to, all available, with colour texts and more. Best feature implemented is, 3rd party sleep tracker "Sleep As Android". Default Mi Fit app, I don't know why, it doesn't track when I wake up. Only tells me when I wake up to go to toilet to piss. If I wake up briefly due to my babies crying, the next morning I see, it doesn't track when I woke up. This is where the beauty of "Sleep As Android" works, it manages to track everything, plus more. It even has a smart alarm. By this time, Mi Band 5 already comes with the smart alarm, I don't know how well it works, but I trust SAA (Sleep As Android), because almost everything I wake up super fresh, never drowsy. Worth every penny paid for it. Oh, before I forget, it even add new feature such as "Gestures". You can do double tapping, triple tapping, swiping, etc. to do all kinds of things, like skip songs, play, pause, volume up, down, launch camera, etc. Custom watch face (without needed to see all the ads)
Whereas Notify for Mi Band, this app adds even more features not available on Mi Fit and Mi Band Tools. One very super good feature, that I'll definitely use when I travel, is that it has SCREEN MIRRORING. It sends a screenshot from your phone to your Mi Band in set intervals (5 seconds? 10 seconds? etc.) This way, when I travel (which I often did before Covid-19), I always use Google Maps in foreign land, while I do city walking tours. I could leave the phone in my pocket, and look at my watch, rely on it to guide me my way. It can alert you when phone battery is high/low, to remind you to charge/unplug your charger, sync to Google Fit, Maps, Alexa, Google Clock, etc. Oh, did I mention install widgets? Reply to messages on WhatsApp, Telegram, WeChat, etc.
These 2 apps will make your Mi Band 5 -into a powerhouse --> easily perform as well as a Fitbit Versa 2 (without the SpO2), maybe Fitbit's sensors maybe a little bit better, but I have nothing to compare to, I don't know which one is accurate which one not, and I assumed Fitbit is a little more accurate. Trust me, I had the Versa 2 for a week, before deciding to sell it, because I hate 3 things about it. 1) I have to pay money monthly to get my sleep data which was collected from me 2) Bigger, although it's comfortable, it's nothing compared to Mi Band and Honor Band 3) Battery lasted only 3.5 days max (slightly better than Samsung Watch Active, but still sucked)

I have the mi band 4 and don't see enough of a difference (other than nap logging) to get the 5. Plus I like 3 weeks battery Life on the band 4. 1 week on the band 5 is too short. However the magnetic charger makes it easier to charge the and 5.

yes and it tracks rem sleep. But doing that your sleep score is lower than the mi band 4 which doesn't have rem. Sleep score on that is higher as it only does light and deep sleep.

about 'stress monitoring', i guess the device measuring your heartrate & compare it to your 'baseline heart rate'. if it increased relative to 'baseline heart rate' while there's no major physical activity, the device detects it as stress.
since normal human body response to stress (mental & physical); increase heart rate, increase blood pressure, increase respiration, and so on.
