Giant Cheese Burger, Debt Free Living, Becoming More Self Reliant and Successful at the Log Cabin

- My goal is self reliant, debt free living at the log cabin, and to be successful l I need to learn how to live off the land, to use the forest sustainably to provide food, fuel and building materials and to make sacrifices today for my long term security and survival. In this episode, I delve deeper into the process of making maple syrup from trees and I cook two meals utilizing some of the syrup - a one-pound cheeseburger on homemade sourdough bread with maple caramelized onions for dinner and French toast and bacon with hot maple syrup for breakfast.
Cali, my golden retriever, does not leave my side all day. We walk along the river and she jumps in and swims and retrieves sticks for over an hour, oblivious to the freezing temperatures. We collect more balsam fir poles for the log furniture I'm making (next episode) before another snow storm rolls in. The days are comfortable, but the end of the video shows the storm moving in, eventually dumping almost a foot of fresh snow on the cabin. Next week's video shows a renewed winter wonderland even though it's spring.

In my life I never thought I'd see someone making home made maple syrup from the tree to the jar, and all done using wood fire. Thanks again for letting us into your life! Has nothing to do with the breed of dog, but rather the fact that this guy controls his dog's meals... He doesn't leave food and water lying around for the dog to eat whenever it wants...
This instills in the dog's mind, that he is the alpha. In dog society, the alpha eats first and TELLS the other dogs when they can eat... Watch wolves... A normal pack member wolf will NEVER eat before the alpha wolf and if he tries, it's a challenge for leadership and ends up in a fight to the death.
Most people who own dogs, don't establish themselves as the alpha, because they let the dog eat whenever it wants by leaving food and water out in bowls on the floor.
This kind of obedience is achieved in ANY breed of dog, as long as you know a dog's psychology and behaviors...
The reason your dog eats your food when you leave it alone is because your dog is looking at you like YOU'RE the beta fish and THEY are the alpha.
Control their food, and you'll change that real quick. Continue to leave bowls of food and water out 24/7 and you'll be the beta fish 4 life.
This guy's golden retriever simply views him as the alpha in the pack and that's why he didn't touch the food. Has NOTHING to do with his breed.
I can get the same results with a pit bull.

When my teen age kids are done college and on their own way. I am selling everything I have and moving off grid. Not Alaska or anything but will not be in the city.

Your videos are a potent reminder of the shear joy of just walking through the forest. The scents of the cedar, the pines, all the various aromas have found their way into my mind though there aren't any for miles where I live. Thanks for energizing the memories. Maybe I can take a few days soon and make some new ones.
I am only 27 min in and oh my gosh, I didn't think there was a way to improve on cooking burgers but you JUST DID! You sort of figured out the McDonald's secret sauce of mayo with ketchup but missed a tad of relish/russian dressing, LOL. You make them like I make my meatloaf, but I NEVER thought to put an egg into the burgers; your homemade bread crumbs and the maple syrup on the mushrooms and onions completely blew my mind! I am a chef, not by trade, but watching all these homemade tricks, I am now dying to try them for myself! Thank you for that! For those that think you showing HOW to cook in the Cabin, is not part of real Cabin Life, well then they probably don't know how to cook LOL.
Also, I don't know what it is but watching you do all this hard work, and believe me I know it's ALL hard work, it is so RELAXING to me....as I sit on my hiney watching the video LOL. You do an AMAZING job with the editing; the way you incorporate the sounds of nature and just show ALL the sides of SELF RELIANCE and hard work, you deserve an Oscar! It has always been the truth, that when I am feeling at loose ends as if my kite has broken loose and there is no one holding on to the end of the line, if I take a moment and choose a project to work on I feel immediately better. I throw myself a life ring. I create something here, on my little piece of the planet, that has my stamp on it and while I am doing it, I feel involved in the act of living, not removed from it. Your videos are always a welcome reminder of that. Even though my studio is just downstairs, my garden is just outside, my stories are just a keystroke away, I can still get to a point where I just dont do them because I get bogged down in complications. I forget how to save myself.

Peace! Our maple season is just ending in Northwestern PA... USA. Trees are just starting to bud, yuck! Pretty good season though, made just over 1700 gallons of syrup on 3200 taps. Nice video. Gary... PA....USA! Oh Shawn, get your self a syrup hydrometer (20 bucks US) and a test cup (20 bucks US). You'll get it correct every time.

Yes, he’s inspired me to eat more cleanly, so I went to my cupboard and grabbed the ingredients for whole meal bread and baked my first loaf. Turned out pretty good and tasty. You remind me of my Dad even though we are the same age. He built a log cabin in the early 80s with a chainsaw and the winch on his truck. I helped him build a woodshop out of old telephone poles. He was a good blacksmith and master mechanic. Wish I had paid more attention. Time flies.
