Ford delays start of electric vehicle production, impacting 3,200 Ontario jobs

  • Ford Motor Co. is delaying the start of electric vehicle production at its plant in Oakville, Ont., by two years. The U.S. automaker had planned to start production at the Canadian plant, which employs 2,700 workers, in 2025 and is pushing that back to 2027.
Ford announced plans last year to spend $1.8 billion to transform its Oakville assembly plant into a hub for electric vehicle manufacturing, including vehicle and battery pack assembly. It says work to overhaul the plant will begin in the second quarter of this year as planned, but the launch of the new three-row electric vehicles to be produced at the factory won’t happen until 2027.
The delay will give the consumer market more time to develop, the company said, and allow for further development of EV battery technology. Some employees will remain on site during the plant transformation but there will be layoffs, Ford spokesperson Said Deep said Thursday. He noted that employees are eligible for income security benefits for a period that varies with seniority levels.
The company said it will work with Unifor, which represents 3,200 workers at the plant, to mitigate the impact the delay will have on its workforce.
    Colin D'Mello has that story.

The ford EVs should have evolved over time naturally without huge piles of cash from governments to the car manufacturers to switch to EV tied to tight timelines by the Government . This is a flawed business model that is not sustainable. That is why Toyota did not invest in EVS , they invested in hybrids and PHEV and that is why they are number 1 in the world for years. On a side note Ford in 2023 has the most recalls in the top ten Toyota doesnt even make the list.

Haha does Lana Payne look like she has ever worked a labour job in her life? 74% of GM Oshawa's workforce had "restrictions" some with just 6 months seniority, who is paying $44/hr when 74% can't do half a job? They could ask Japan for that long awaited apology for how they treated Canadian POWs during WWII. You know, like how the Japanese cut off the heads of Canadians with Samurai swords in prison camps. Oh wait, if Doug Ford does that, then Honda and Toyota might get mad and move their plants to the USA. Gee I wonder if that's why Ontario won't demand an apology from Japan? Hmmmmm.

It's likely because Ford can't make an EV profitably like Tesla and BYD. The retooling is necessary and will likely see the introduction of a 'gigapress' with increased automation in place to save manufacturing costs. I commend them, but, catching Tesla will be hard. Also, for those opinions lamenting about the cost of EV's, pressure your Conservative federal MP 'designate' to remove the 25% tarif on the import of foreign made EV's in the name of 'freedom'. You'll have a 250 mile EV at a 30K price point with LFP batteries that charge to 100%.
