I was very lucky to be invited to ride the 3801 Long Lunch train with my mother in-law out of Sydney in 2000 while my wife was competing as a member of the U.S. Equestrian Team during the Sydney Olympics. What a thrill that was! As a licensed (U.S.) locomotive engineer and steam locomotive fireman I was impressed with 3801 as relatively easy to fire although it would be difficult for me since the engineer and fireman positions are reversed from positions I am familiar with. I am very grateful to the kind and generous Australians and train crew.

And it certainly was wonderful. And now thanks to such hard working people who poured their hearts into the restoration, we have here, 20 years later, 3801 running in the year 2020. What a time to be alive.
