Spring Creek FLY FISHING: BIG FISH Knee Deep in Montana’s Madison Valley by Todd Moen

- Rocky Mountain small creeks are where I enjoy spending my time filming fly fishing during the spring months in Montana. The big insect hatches that can take place bring the big trout up to the surface making it possible to capture incredible footage. It's what I love to do as a cinematographer. Watch good friend Pete Corbett throw long leaders to large brown trout, rainbow trout and cutthroat trout during Montana's spring PMD hatch. It really doesn't get much better than this.

Fished spring creeks near me and the great rivers in Montana as a resident for 17 years. Before the population boom. This really is what it was like and still - if ya know where to go and the folks who give access. Wonderful, wonderful memories here! Madison Valley is very, very special! I was in fly-fishing videos myself back in the day....

Thanks. X2 was everything except the aerials and a few underwater shots. SO yes, 98% was X2.

Not something I worry about usually as I've never had a problem. You'd think they would be thick but they aren't.

This is in Idaho. Montana is nothing but sage brush and muddy creeks with carp and suckers so, you know, don't bother coming because it'll be a huge disappointment. HUGE.....

What the day fee?
No day fee that I'm aware of. A few senior guides that have been around for 40 years or so use the ranch but it's just a classic working ranch with a little spring running through it.

I think only old veterans guides who have been around for 40 years or so get the privilege of guiding this water. It’s a working ranch, the real deal with a small spring creek that happens to run through it.

Clark Fork has good access at many of the boat launches. Although be aware the river at that point will be very high and muddy from spring runoff. I'm just not sure about lures we fly fish.
