Super Mario Land 2 Ending Theme sight-read by Tom Brier

- This was the last thing played at the May 2013 Mother Lode Ragtime Society meeting, hence his comment at the beginning. You get an idea of how his sight-reading works when the fast bit begins and it takes a few measures before he realizes he's playing it with the wrong rhythm, then restarts the section in the correct one-step rhythm.
That really shows how he only glances at the music enough to figure out the melody and the chord sequence, maybe the basic idea of the bass line, and then simply improvises from there.
The improvisation is taken to a farther level later on when he switches it to a minor key and plays it as a waltz.
The sheet music I made which he is reading can be downloaded from my site www.keeper1st.com/music/vgm.html
At one point in the video you hear an odd sound that makes us laugh and I say, "bad strings!" There was an A-flat on the piano that was missing two strings, so it had just one string sounding. Hopefully those strings have been fixed since then, as we're meeting here at the Sutter Creek Ice Cream Emporium again tomorrow night!

Wow, not only does he add extra notes and tempo changes, he actually changes the entire style of the song and still keeps it in character with the original. He transposed it into a minor key waltz, for crying out loud. And he even made it sound heartfelt. I'm honestly blown away by this
Danny Dolan What makes it even more impressive, he's sight reading.- probably doesn't even know the melody since he doesn't play videogames. True genius
even better, he knows the melody and decides to improve upon it
He is just unbelievable

Even if you are not a fan of video games, you have to admit that Nintendo's composers do some great work.
Alot of the songs from Nintendo are from other areas. Tetris Type A is Russian, Super Mario Land medley (early 1900s) and several tunes from Poke'Mon are like mother goose tunes and stuff

Hope he recovers from the accident.
the pianist had an accident?
Yeah it appears he's been in a heavy road traffic accident and has some level of brain injury. I just discovered his videos today, I can't believe how gifted he is.
Yes, he was nearly killed on August 6th when his car was struck from behind at high speed by a large pickup while stopped at the end of a line of traffic on a freeway offramp. His car was crushed and it took more than an hour for crews to cut him out. He has what may be permanent brain damage. Currently, he is semi-aware and sometimes reacts to jokes spoken to him. He moves his left arm but his right side is mostly inert. He can not speak.
Oh my that's terrible... Wishing all the best for him. Glad to see he's at least partially recovered.
SadManHappyFace breaks my heart. I hope this insanely gifted man makes a full recovery. His playing has made my day many a time. Prayers and positive thoughts coming his way.
7:07
He has no idea but he just incorporated the 1-UP sound in a mario song. Genius.
😍😍😍
This man is a true treasure to gamers and non gamers alike!
Coming back over a decade later to share that I finally learned this piece. This video was my inspiration to take piano seriously as a young man. And I have finally achieved that. Love you Tom, I pray earnestly to God for your speedy recovery. You are an inspiration to millions whether you know it or not
my heart lives in an alternate universe where tom's accident never happened and he's still happily playing tunes for all of us to enjoy
😢 oh boy
Tom didn't have to go that hard, he was just sight-reading some video game music because a friend asked him to. He did that for us
He just turned a nice melody into a beautiful heart-felt musical journey while sightreading. That was a complex love song with ups and downs and coming to terms in the end.
Yeah, I think this one is a bit underrated. The change to minor he does, and the emotional journey he takes with the music, makes it one of my favorites of his sight readings.
I don' care what the piece is at this point. I just need a hundred Brier videos.
…
I keep coming back to this - I love this man

I wonder how he’s doing right now.
@@calebmcintosh3241 probably will never play again. got into a car accident I believe. they post updates on the discord every once in a while but its really sad.

get well tom.
golden280 we're all hoping and praying for you Tom :)
I’m an English writing major nearing the end of my college career, hoping to get into screenwriting as it’s been a passion of mine for many years, and I must say, Tom has been one of my biggest inspirations to write a story about. I often write test screenplays for myself, generally for practice or just because something inspires me to do so. Tom’s accident was such a heartbreaking thing to hear about, and I’ve been trying to follow his recovery to the best of my ability. Seeing the progression he has made so far (as well as listening to his music, both covers and original pieces) is a spark that lights a flame of creativity and hope within me. If there’s ever any way to relay this silly old message to him, I’d be eternally grateful. Just a general message of well wishes in his recovery and of thanks for providing beautiful, unforgettable music, from a fan who is unbelievably happy to have happened upon such a wonderful musician many years ago. - Chris
Ever thought of revisiting this concept? I love the idea and would love to know his story. Good luck with the screenplays!
-Jeff
Write a movie about him that’d be awesome I would definitely watch that
Since someone came here last year, I'll do the same this year. I'd much appreciate such a thing, and would even like to help with if possible. It's such a great concept that I don't think should go to waste.
- John.
I hope you get there one day.
I share the wanting to see a movie about Tom someday, even if it’s fictional.
let me get this straight... he's never heard this track before?
Yeah, he's just reading the score for the first time. He's been doing that for about 35 years, especially this kind of music. He reads the melody and sees enough of the left hand to note the chord sequence, then improvises the rest. That's why you see he isn't playing exactly what's on the pages.
Keeper1st amazing
@@Keeper1st Wow this explains so many things that simply look impossible at first glance. Many thanks for the explanation, very enlightening.
@@Keeper1st does he play all the notes? or improvise most of it?
@@sergouszz79 He never played anything as written -- even his own compositions! You can compare the score he's reading to what he plays. See the web site in the description to download the score he's reading.
The world is so cruel, my heart aches when I think of Tom. I never knew him outside out these videos but he has had an impact on my life that not many people have had. I’m not an emotional person but Toms story will always bring me near to tears. Thank you Tom from the bottom of my heart and I wish you the absolute best, God’s speed.

A true hero has played their last note
@@nolanwolfe As I understand it he has gotten some mobility back recently, if rumor is to be believed he's able to do some rudimentary piano playing even
I'm not a piano player, but I memorized all of the fingerings to this song, and putting it all together is SO FRIGGEN HARD. My total time is 9 minutes (still not 7) and I've been practicing this for about 1 full year now. Not to mention, he's SIGHT READING(edit: ***improvising) this. He's played a lot of rags in the past, but this is still (figuratively) unbelievable
Not to mention how much on-the-fly rearranging he is doing - waltz, minor key, etc. There are many videos of Tom just making up new music off the top of his head too.
@@Keeper1st my apologies, I will fact check myself next time. Although to be fair: they're both hard to truly appreciate/understand, for me at least
I started piano in 2014 because of this dude
Thanks Tom
Ahh, whenever he brier-izes a song it brings joy to my heart.
Spencer Ducharme and also sadness as he has been in a terrible accident and can’t properly play. (Yet)
I always come back to this video when I need a good cry. It's my favourite of Tom's sight readings, he put so much feelings into a Mario song, bad strings and all.
Sometimes I'm happy when I watch this, sometimes I'm sad, but Tom's playing always leaves me in a better place.
Such a wonderful human. Hope he's doing better. I know a full recovery is probably wishful thinking, but by god does he deserve it. Best wishes to Tom and yourself.
And thank you for recording all of these, it's more than I could have ever asked for.

Dylan Schreffler same here...
hold up, what accident? Did his hand(s) get messed up?
he was in a car crash and had really bad brain damage, at least that's what I've heard. Really sad.
ohh.
That is correct. His hands are OK, but he can't really use his right arm/hand too much yet. He recently was able to touch his face with his right hand for the first time since the accident in August. He can move his left side quite well and has played a left-hand part on piano with visiting friends. He is bed-ridden/wheelchair-bound and cannot speak, though he is trying to re-learn how. He does understand everything you say to him though, so it's more a matter of physical movement that's been damaged; his thoughts, intelligence and personality all seem intact.
This actually put a tear in my eye... I hope Tom is ok.
The man had an almost fatal accident...
@Bubba Gump Dude, the man almost died

I absolutely adore the joy on his face as he plays the song.
I disagree, tbh. The fact that he can't play anymore makes the joy feeling so bitter.. I guess we should smile because it happened ('it' being his joy), but the man was a genius and had it taken away from him. "God" has a cruel sense of humor
i’ve never read a comments section more positive and genuinely moved by something before. people can be wonderful sometimes

Nope. We get it.
@@andybaldman no… most people know what a sight read is, but what they dont know is he is reading 2 different sheets at the same time for each hand, and timing the tempos to some random ass missing notes in the reading. on top of this, hes a swing player, and the music happens to have incorporated his style. HIS EARLY 1900S SALOON STYLE. on top of this, the motherfucker never even HEARD THE SONGS BEFORE. Sight reading is one thing, but to perform a song at that accuracy better than the guy whos heard the song his whole life just his first time hearing it is just other worldly.

My man can hear the music in his head just seeing it on the sheet.
He's just reacting to the title saying it is an ending theme, as this was the last thing he was going to be able to play before we had to leave for the night.
I can’t stop watching this one song, it’s just too good. It sounds like life, its happy and jumpy, then it’s soft and romantic, then it’s up and marching, then it’s the end of the story. I’m so thankful that you were able to record this, and I’m sure you’ve been told this many times, but Tom is just an absolute work of art and talent. And the entire world needs to know his name for it. So thanks again for this amazing video!
