    Quite a good animation of the operation of a swashplate, but it is missing two important elements. The upper and lower parts of the swashplate ( known as upper and lower star), both show a connection for the stabilising scissor connection, but the scissors are not shown. The lower scissor is attached to the gearbox housing and allows for the vertical and tilting motion whilst preventing rotation of the lower star, and the upper scissor is connected to the rotor head, so that it drives the upper star. In the animation the only things connecting the upper star to the rotor head are the pitch change links, and these are intended to provide vertical motion only, not to transmit rotational force to the swashplate.
    Otherwise this is a good representation.

    • @bzig4929
      @bzig4929  Před 9 měsíci +11

      Nice observation and explanation! I had the scissors in the original cad, but figuring out the motion constraints for the animation was beyond my abillity at the time. I made a subsequent animation that shows the scissors.

      The Kaman K-Max actually uses fixed blade grips and control flaps on the trailing edge of each blade operated by 1/4" push pull rods inside the blade. Rather than changing the angle of attack at the shoulder the pitch control links operate the push pull rods to move the control flaps and the whole blade twists along it's lenght. The K-Max is a weird helicopter though.

    How can this work with hinge as rotor mount rotor would sit on the ground when not spinning and would flap up uselessly when it starts to make lift ?

    • @bzig4929
      @bzig4929  Před 11 měsíci +2

      Helicopters have droop stops to contain flapping at low RPM. I didn't model those. As far as over-flapping, this motion is aerodynamically well-damped. As the blade flaps up, the induce velocity increases, this deceased the blade aoa, and decreases lift.

    • @oscargrouch7962
      @oscargrouch7962 Před 9 měsíci

      Rotor blade droop stops under pressure from springs prevent the blades of fully-articulated helicopter rotor systems from "drooping" to the ground at no or low rpm then retract into the rotor blade roots with centrifugal force at high rpm. The centrifugal force of the rotor blades at high rpm is stronger than the blade "coning" force caused by rotor blade lift which prevents the rotor blades from flapping up uselessly. Yes, helicopter rotor systems operate under a lot of stress.
