if you ever wonder why Toraja in Indonesia is different from the rest of Indonesia, it is because they are genetically different. Javaneses and Sumatrans have Cambodian ancestry. Nowadays, you have people intermarrying, so the term of "Pure Torajan" is declining.
I know a bit about Torajan culture, and apparently they believe that a deceased person is just ill currently resting and not truly dead before they are in the tomb. Sometimes the family lives with a dead body inside their home for months or even years before they got enough money to arrange a ceremony, casually talking and asking them as if they're still alive, and that shaking thing they do with the coffin is to 'wake up' the deceased to prepare them for their final resting place. Also, did you get to witness the Torajan version of the walking dead there which is called Ma'nene? It's a tradition where they dig up their ancestors' long deceased bodies and change their clothes.

there are many pro and contra about toraja funeral ceremony even among Indonesian, and since there are so many tribes many relegies with many different cultures at Indonesia, we must respect each other.
Important reminder: the buffels still kicking after 5 minutes doesnt mean it is still alive. The brain is shut down completely but the nervous system is still reacting. Tho it was still a pretty long time before it died, it didnt take the whole 5 minutes
Finally this episode. I think I'm the one who suggested you to come to Toraja Dale (maybe) If you remembered, I sent you a reel about the tombs on the Clift, and you reply quite excited 😁🙏 Anyway keep it coming brother 😊
it's a Ma'nene ritual, someone isn't considered 'dead' if the family haven't do the ritual, and the family will keep the deceased body and treat them as if they're still alive (talk to them, change their clothes, offer them food) until they did the funeral ritual. it's the most expensive funeral ritual in Indonesia.
I know it’s cultural and your content is true too the heart that’s why your the best travel flogger but I had too look away was a hard watch … much respect dale
It’s amazing how many people are willing to dismiss/excuse cruelty as part of a “culture”. Saying it’s just your “culture” shouldn’t give you a free pass to be inhumane. Sacrifice the animal quickly and cleanly otherwise it’s about enjoying the suffering of the animal and that’s beyond disgusting!
I dont blame but I hope for the future.. Toraja people will find a way to kill buffalo fast without so much pain and suffering.. So sad and uncomfortable to see this because we have affection ❤😢

Thanks for showing the reality of such ceremonies. We can only hope that the slaughtering processes may evolve as there's absolutely no need to torture animals to death (especially the pig who was stabbed and cut several times).
What a disturbing cultural norm , to cheer and laugh as an animal is in terror dieing and suffering. Thank you for sharing this with us Dale, learned somthing new

Humans were savages bro, take for examples the Vikings who launched still moving heads inside the cities of England to create fear and turmoil. Imagine your son's head falling on your doorstep. Life isn't black and white, the good and bad is subjective to how high morality you have (based on current societiel standards.) all we can do is accept what it is, the weak get trampled on by the strong, only a few strong are humble, the rest enjoy their power by trampling the poor and weak. That's why it's important to not be that pig. Even if you are going out, go out fighting. Don't be weak, don't accept any of it, otherwise we will end up like that pig, and dying doesn't just mean losing life but also losing life/joy while living. God bless.
@@davrak711 hahaha bro just try it if your country is like Indonesia do you accept if your country is ridiculed? there are still Dayak tribes in Indonesia who in ancient times hunted human heads, fortunately now they i don't but don't know if there are still tribes who are deeper into doing it or not
They do try to have a quick deep cut and make the animal die fast and less pain. But the tradition only let you to have 1 strike only, and must let the rest to bleed to die, by so it also shows the skill of the algojo if he can make the buffalo die in 1 strike fast and less agony. They have to strike it while the buffalo standing, any only through the neck. The blade for it also each own algojo prepared. Usually the algojo will stand with it holding the rope till it die, so it's important to have the skill to kill it efficiently. The one they laughed at was the algojo that seems like a rocky, that can't control or efficiently kill the buffalo. I'm not a Torajanese, but I do try to search and read some their sacrifice rules and traditions. And that the general info that might answer a bit of your argument why it's harsh and brutal in a way.
I am guessing the traditional funeral rituals has modernized and evolved somewhat differently from what it used to be especially with the younger generations. Managed to watch all the way through while it's still there, tough call but appreciate the gutsy move.
This just shows their pure lack of respect for life. A kid kicking a slowly dying pig and people laughing and cheering when a young buffalo is dying for 5 minutes is part of culture that belongs in the past. Great video Dale and thank you for sharing your experience
These living ancient Torajan traditions might not fit your modern Abrahamic religions POV, but to say their tradition and culture as "lack of respect for life" is a total mess and so disrespectful. Furthermore, who are you to judge what's belongs to such and such? it's their own thing, not yours. Cheering, laughing, and dancing during sacrificial rites are part of their living cultural heritage. I'm not Torajan myself but I feel so offended by your non-considerate and hateful comment.
@Ix-.-xI I'm glad your offended as I was offended by their complete inhumanity in the name of a made up god. I've seen other tribal and religious sacrifices which are carried out with respect for the fact that they're taking a life in the name of religion not repeatedly stabbing a pig and letting a disrespectful child kick it as it dies
@@Steve-rr8qf what you perceived as "god" might different to their understanding, don't push your POV about your "god" to the people who had different religious beliefs about "god", your self-defined god isn't their god in their definition, and their defined god isn't your god in your definition and perception. And fyi, they aren't sacrificing in the name of your Abrahamic religions, these traditions has been going on since ancient times way before your Abrahamic religions even popular to the surface. If you watch the video properly Dale already mentioned that Torajan are adhered to both Abrahamic religion and their own folk beliefs, and those sacrifices are belongs to their folk beliefs not Abrahamic religion. It seems like you are the one who had *lack of knowledge and respect* over these ethnic community.
I'm used to seeing cattle slaughter from Islamic eid al-adha, yet this is still a bit too much for me. It's the slow death that's painful to watch compared to the Islamic way (severing the throat in single motion, quick death).
Still don't understand why they intentionally let the buffaloes suffer, but it's tradition i guess. For me who usually watch cow and goat sacrifices in Islam, the buffaloes in this video looks very hurt cause they don't end them quickly like the usual "qurban" in islamic tradition.
I must congratulate you Dale for showing this. In the west the slaughter of animals is hidden. Here it's real and not hidden it's like for me almost a respect for the animal , its death is experienced by everyone. I hope I'm clear what I'm trying to say and you understand. A lot of vloggers would not show this , this is showing real culture. Thankyou.

Fun fact, there is a bit of Indian cultural influence from the past in the rituals that are performed, maybe not in the sacrificial part but the philosophy
Don’t want be disrespectful to someone’s culture but that’s super inhumane… The buffalos shouldn’t witness another being killed like that. Have the animal on the ground covering its eyes from the knife which needs to be super sharp and action of slaughter needs to be swift to make sure the animals doesn’t feel it. Unlike what’s happening in this video… The animal is standing and struggling for dear life.
That was so sweet and considerate of you Dale bhai to say that if anyone is uncomfortable to watch they should not see🙏. In south India, people dance for a ritual to make the deceased person feel happy.

there are many pro and contra about toraja funeral ceremony even among Indonesian, and since there are so many tribes many relegies with many different cultures at Indonesia, we must respect each other.
Important reminder: the buffels still kicking after 5 minutes doesnt mean it is still alive. The brain is shut down completely but the nervous system is still reacting. Tho it was still a pretty long time before it died, it didnt take the whole 5 minutes
Finally this episode. I think I'm the one who suggested you to come to Toraja Dale (maybe)
If you remembered, I sent you a reel about the tombs on the Clift, and you reply quite excited 😁🙏
Anyway keep it coming brother 😊
it's a Ma'nene ritual, someone isn't considered 'dead' if the family haven't do the ritual, and the family will keep the deceased body and treat them as if they're still alive (talk to them, change their clothes, offer them food) until they did the funeral ritual. it's the most expensive funeral ritual in Indonesia.
Finally Dale uploaded too, I've been waiting for Mi Dale's latest content😅
I know it’s cultural and your content is true too the heart that’s why your the best travel flogger but I had too look away was a hard watch … much respect dale
As an indonesian myself, i was quite shocked watching through the entire video haha, never have i ever seen anything like that. Great video as always!
No
I dont blame but I hope for the future.. Toraja people will find a way to kill buffalo fast without so much pain and suffering.. So sad and uncomfortable to see this because we have affection ❤😢
Thanks for brought this experience to us. Really unique and never seen this before.
what an eye opener. I am lost for words and that is a first. Totally love how real and raw your vlogs are. Interested and definitely educational. Best vlogger around. Fantastic. Hard watch at first.
even i who grew up there, still cant fathom this cruel tradition
Thanks for showing the reality of such ceremonies. We can only hope that the slaughtering processes may evolve as there's absolutely no need to torture animals to death (especially the pig who was stabbed and cut several times).
First comment, enjoy the one of the Indonesian traditional adat dale. Welcome in Toraja
Love your videos ❤❤❤
What a disturbing cultural norm , to cheer and laugh as an animal is in terror dieing and suffering. Thank you for sharing this with us Dale, learned somthing new
Dud you are misunderstanding the people cheering and laughing cos the way of butcher looks like rocky for them so they are not laughing to the dead buffalo, I know their habitual because I'm Torajanise.
@@dharmatoding3570 thank you for giving me more about this.
Why do you care ?? It's their culture let em do their thing. If you don't like it don't watch it
@Amaan Khan it's my opinion , why do you care just move on.

I love watching your videos when I am bored your videos expires me a lot. 🙃☺🤭
Hey Dale, bit late in watching this episode but looks to be an interesting series of your travels.👍
Your respect for traditions is what makes you such a great vlogger. This was hard to watch though.
After seeing this my heart is broken 😭 what i feel is peaple should stop all this blind faith.its very very painful .
people could say the same about your faith, let's respect and not being so judgemental over the things you might not familiar with, it's part of their folk religious tradition, who are you to judge.
Respect people's culture and tradition
@@bittubiswas8271 keep your respect with you you are a heartless person because you don't feel the pain doing this you think their sins are forgiven.
@@Ix-.-xI my faith i don't kill animals or hurt anyone
@@ursulafernandes722 but according to your faith, God had to suicide (killing himself), and according to your faith as well, a dad could perform an incest and another explicit things. _After seeing your comment my heart is broken 😭 what i feel is peaple should stop all your blind faith.its very annoying and painful._ 🤡
It must have been hard with that video to just give a very impartial reportage and education about Toraya culture to your audience without being judgemental. You managed it beautifully. Hats off to you Dale!
Im really addicted to your videos, Yer man!, keep healthty 🙏
such an interesting ritual even if it's sad to see all those buffalo but that's how the ritual is. It's also the first time for me as an Indonesian to see the ritual thanks to your video, Dale.
“Interesting ritual” I’d call it barbaric!
@@richiejames6484 it has to be done.
@@richiejames6484 it is interesting...unless you worship cows 😂
@@Ratio66 well that makes absolutely no sense. 🤔 I worship cow’s because I think butchering an animal is barbaric and completely unnecessary.

This was so hard to watch but i appreciate these videos ! Dale is such a good guy
been to Toraja twice but haven't watched the ceremony yet.. you came at the right time, so lucky Dale!
I love your videos Dale! ♥️♥️
Nice Video Dale ❤
This aint slaughter its torture.
The men on the minute 39:46 said: "Melo sia raka pare lako?". It means: "Is the rice there (in your hometown) good (in growth) ?". People ask this question to their family or friends from another village to say hello when they meet after long time. :D He joked on you
very interesting and unique ritual. thank you for sharing Dale
I literally watch an entire full video of his despite how long it takes.. Rarely does this to other videos. I guess Dale is a chilled dude, presenting in such honest natural way.. Not trying hard and just so natural to watch..
Love it Dale ! 😀
One should make a tomb for the buffaloes as well …. Rip for the innocent souls💔
Graves for buffalo? the buffalo's meat is distributed to the community / people
Understand the sacrifice, but what a harsh and brutal way to do it. Absolute cruelty.
God bless.
@@iamAurel1us yes but a quick cut to the head and removing it completely is 100% more humane
@@davrak711 hahaha bro just try it if your country is like Indonesia do you accept if your country is ridiculed? there are still Dayak tribes in Indonesia who in ancient times hunted human heads, fortunately now they i don't but don't know if there are still tribes who are deeper into doing it or not
@@belalangkrispii ok that great. My comment still stands true. Thanks for your opinion
Managed to watch all the way through while it's still there, tough call but appreciate the gutsy move.
semua oeradaban bisa saja berubah seiring waktu mengikuti zaman kecuali di pulau zentinel yg masih purba
This just shows their pure lack of respect for life. A kid kicking a slowly dying pig and people laughing and cheering when a young buffalo is dying for 5 minutes is part of culture that belongs in the past. Great video Dale and thank you for sharing your experience
The culture of your country is colonizing other countries, and making black people as slaves
I agree 100%. This was very eye-opening to see. There are many tribal traditions in many cultures that don’t involve slaughtering innocent animals.
Honestly thought I’d be able to stomach this, but I can’t. I’ll catch you in the next video. Peace brother
You saying oh my word is so funny because it’s wild. Great video!
Hiiiii🙋... your vlogs are superb 👍 Good job Buddyyy..
Slow and painful😢
Always fantastic & autenthic dale..👍👌
Awww amazing Vidio Dale. Thank you
I'm addicted to your videos Dale ❤
I'm used to seeing cattle slaughter from Islamic eid al-adha, yet this is still a bit too much for me. It's the slow death that's painful to watch compared to the Islamic way (severing the throat in single motion, quick death).
Kalo qurban kan langsung dipenggal pake piso tajem kalo ini dipotongnya dikit2
As always great content Dale!
I like your videos a lot...❤
Awesome video ❤❤❤
letsgooo a new adventure with yerman 🔥🔥
Thank you for Coming to Toraja. You make a amazing vlog. And really good video.😇🤩
Another new video to be watched ❤, take care and stay safe Dale
Still don't understand why they intentionally let the buffaloes suffer, but it's tradition i guess. For me who usually watch cow and goat sacrifices in Islam, the buffaloes in this video looks very hurt cause they don't end them quickly like the usual "qurban" in islamic tradition.
I'm not toraja people. But this never i see when visit Rantepao. Great, Thank for your video dale.
Feeling sad for those buffaloes. They don’t know that they are getting slaughtered 😞
Very slow and painful death
I must congratulate you Dale for showing this. In the west the slaughter of animals is hidden. Here it's real and not hidden it's like for me almost a respect for the animal , its death is experienced by everyone. I hope I'm clear what I'm trying to say and you understand. A lot of vloggers would not show this , this is showing real culture. Thankyou.
I didn't feel bad nor feel happy for the sacrifice, but the whole thing is still interesting nonetheless, even for me as an indonesian. Made me realize there are many places and things in my own country that are interesting. And i love how you keep being open minded for the whole journey. Good video, as always!
look how civilised the people became when Islam entered their country. this is utterly barbaric; if these people where muslim like the majoirty of Indonesia none of these retarded rituals would would be happening. In Islam you can obviously slaughter (for food); however its forbidden to do it infront of other animals and you definitely can't make a show out of it and clap and laugh :/
Thanks so much dale ! Never in my dreams can think of this until i saw ! What a strong culture and traditions ! Iam from india btw.
Fun fact, there is a bit of Indian cultural influence from the past in the rituals that are performed, maybe not in the sacrificial part but the philosophy

Don’t want be disrespectful to someone’s culture but that’s super inhumane…
The buffalos shouldn’t witness another being killed like that.
Have the animal on the ground covering its eyes from the knife which needs to be super sharp and action of slaughter needs to be swift to make sure the animals doesn’t feel it. Unlike what’s happening in this video…
The animal is standing and struggling for dear life.
That was so sweet and considerate of you Dale bhai to say that if anyone is uncomfortable to watch they should not see🙏.
In south India, people dance for a ritual to make the deceased person feel happy.
That’s so cool, I love watching your channel, and seeing how other cultures live
