- The Cancun Visitax is confusing because there are already a few different tourist taxes that you pay when you visit Cancun. The Mexican Tourist Tax and the Mexican Departure Tax are both line items on your flight ticket receipt. However these are completely different taxes! The Visitax is a state tax from Quintana Roo that was enacted in April 2021 to go towards the conservation of the Cancun beaches, coral reefs and state parks. But is the Visitax Mandatory? All of the research that I have done says that it is a mandatory tax but they are still working out on how to enforce the Visitax. #cancun #traveltips #mexico
In this video I give you a brief overview of the Visitax is and how to pay it. This is not to persuade anyone to pay the tax, it's simply to inform you of what the Visitax is, what it is not and then you can decide for your self!

I had a trip to Cancun 2 weeks ago they didnt ask for this, so we didnt pay, all went smoothly
Went to Cancun over Thanksgiving. Paid the tax for the 4 of us about 3 weeks before our trip. Used the official website, it was very painless. However, nobody ever checked. It was a good piece of mind though just in case. Because of your videos and comments that there's still confusion on whether they are enforcing it or not I really tried to pay attention if ANYONE was getting asked to show proof and did not see any. Thanks for your great videos, love this channel!

There is a VISITAX section on my resort’s mobile app. I used the link you shared. It cost me $19.80 USD per person. Pretty easy process. I received a receipt via QR code . We’ll see how it goes at the airport when we go back home.

Just got back from Cancun April 6th 2024. Paid the tax online prior to leaving for Cancun but not a single mention of it in the airport at all either coming in or departing. If not for seeing the discussions online about it before heading there I wouldn't even know it exists after being there.

Hey there, would you believe I just got back from cancun, like right now lol, was out there 8 days @ leblanc, followed your videos as you know I did go online and payed for 2 people, got the bar code , followed your instructions to the letter altho? I paid $19.50 a piece and when I went to the airport noooooobody stopped us about visitax, I dunno maybe because I paid online? And when I scanned the passports it showed up there , or maybe when we were checking out bags at the counter and the lady at the desk asked for our passports she may have seen it there perhaps but nooooo one stopped us about paying it, jus alil fyi I think soon there are really gonna put the pressure on they just haven't gotten it together as of yet, but ? On a good note I loved leblanc the governor suite on the 3rd floor was AWESOME, definitely going back

We just returned from Cancun to Tijuana Mexico (we used the Cross Boarder Express ie CBX to walk across the boarder to our home in San Diego. Anyway, we didn't pay the VISTA tax and didn't see how we would pay that tax. Now we were only there for 6 days, so maybe that had something to do with it? Because on our way to Tijuana via the CBX we were asked if we were staying 7 days.

We just came back from Cancun last week. We thought that when we get to Cancun there will be a booth for visitax payment because we did not trust any websites (they ask for passport info). No body mentioned this at the airline nor the resort.

I payed the tax online before my trip. I think it was $15 per person. There is no booth or anyplace at the airport to pay the tax. There are no signs about the tax. No one asked me for anything about the tax. I didn't see anyone being asked for any tax related papers. This is a voluntary tax, pay it if you want but no one is going to ask you for it at the airport. Be very careful if you do decide to pay this tax online, there are many website that will charge $50 fee for handling the payment. My advice is save your money and forget about the tax.
There’s def a lot of questions! It’s not a voluntary tax but they are just trying to figure out how to enforce it! It’s a battle within departments in their government I think lol
I bet the issue is just what you said in the video, this is a state tax and not federal tax. Quintana Roo probably passed this tax on a state level, without support from Mexico’s federal government. QR, like states in the US, most likely doesn’t have access to the federal passport/immigration systems that are operated by the federal government. Quintana Roo probably has no way to actually enforce this tax via someone’s passport…yet.

Does all resorts charge environmental tax? So, if I go to all inclusive resort, I still have to pay additional charges at check out?
I’m pretty sure they all do it. I think it’s like $20 usd It’s included in the taxes and fees

So when you got a quote for the room it should have been included already. So the only thing we ever have to pay when we check out are extras that we get.

Left Cancun Jan 8. Tried hard to pay it online at resort before departure. Credit cards couldn’t work. Asked airport officials before checking bags and getting boarding pass where to pay it in the airport - officials said - don’t bother. You don’t have to. Hahahaha. So…… they have not figured it out. It can’t be mandatory, if nothing is tracked or enforced.
As for the tax money going to preserve the beauty, it sounds great. 30 million or more people go through the cancun airport would mean hundreds of millions in revenue. Maybe they can start taking some of the funds to use to figure out a way to remove ALL OF THE CONFUSION. Have you ever heard of someone not being able to organize a two car parade ?????

It was initially created to be paid online. They don't have the manpower or kiosks to handle 100,000 people per day. Online is the best bet, so you don't risk missing your flight. If stopped for non-payment, you VAN BE DENIED boarding. It isn't worth the risk. (I'm a Legal Permanent Resident of MX, so I've been researching) To answer another question, payment history will be tied to your passport when it is scanned. That is how they will know if you paid or not! If you've gotten by without paying, I wouldn't continue to do it. As they're getting serious about non-payment, fines are going out to people who aren't paying!
It IS in effect since 2021. They're just getting serious about people who don't pay. Its tied in with your passport scan, so it will eventually catch up

So when i paid for thr Vistax, i put in the wrong date, so instead of departure day, i put in the arrival date, dumb me. Now i have already reached out via email regarding date change but im not sure if it is secure because they are asking for passport ID # in order to correct the date. Would it be an issue if i leave it as is?
Honestly I don’t think it would be unless it’s completely different from your departure day
@@3Days3Noches well the arrival date is 19 of apr...and departure date is 24 of apr....so 5 day difference so not sure if they will enforce the date of departure error to be the actual date of depature or they just will let it go as is?

Yes. Since they're getting serious, fines are starting to catch up. People who didn't pay jady time they exited may be fined for no payment at a later entry/ exit when their passport is scanned. It synchronizes payment history to your passport
When i went to Cancun in August the Visitax stand was pushed against the wall and no one was manning it. Luckily I have not gotten a fine so far! @@CancunCindy

I just got tricked into a website claim to be Cancun Airport but fully English, which the URL is not Mexico Official website, and I was stupid enough to enter Credit card info & Passport First & Last name with Passport #!!!!
Luckily, they didn't request the expiry date or more details about the passport info, guess Passport information is not total loss!

Just don’t pay it. I just came back from Cancun and we never paid it. If anyone asks you, say you paid it. There was no check at the airport for this tax.
I never paid any other tax in QR either. It’s a corrupt system, there are now real laws, so just try to avoid it.
