  • The interior mirror (inside the car) is very likely to be a flat glass mirror. This shows you the truth. So when using this mirror you will be able to gauge the distance and speed of the person behind you well.
The exterior mirrors - (outside door left and right mirror) is very likely to be convex glass (bent glass) to give you a bigger field of vision on the left and right - even though this is excellent because you can see more of the road behind you - it distorts the image behind you. It makes things look further away. This can make it more difficult to know what distance they really have behind you and more different to gauge the speed that they are travelling.
Driving instructors will teach you to check your interior mirror first for understanding the distance and speed of the person behind you then they will teach you to check the side mirror of the direction you are going to travel in. So if you are turning left you will check your interior mirror first and then your left mirror - and of course if you are turning right your will check your interior mirror first and then your right hand door mirror.
This is the way driving instructors have been taught to teach you to check your mirrors.
In the Highway Code it says to take effective observations before moving in anyway.
