Shawn, check out the woodshed they built on "Simple Living Alaska". With the live edged lumber they milled for the siding & the spacing they left between the boards, it allows for plenty of air circulation to aid in the drying process. Have a great day 😊.

@Jack Sichewski thank God for concerned citizens such as yourself. Maybe you should also start a Go Fund Me account to finance the building of insulated bird houses for all the birds living in the wild in areas that get below freezing. Then you could start another one to build heated shelters for the rest of the animals in the wild. Oh, we can't forget about heating ponds, streams, major waterways & our oceans so that the fish don't get cold either. Heaven forbid. Thank you so very much for your insight & concern. You have a great day now 😊.

We heat with firewood also, I have about 18 bush cords stacked most of the time. I don't use a tarp either as it seems to trap the moisture in the wood. However, I do use sheets of roof steel overlapped and laid across the top of the wood, the air blows freely through, rain stays out and I have dry firewood whenever I want it. Also, stack the wood bark side up as best as possible, this helps with rain but also gravity pulls the moisture out of the wood better, the bark traps it in which is why it is always damp at the back of the bark even if the wood has been stacked and drying for a couple of years. Simple things but necessary for good wood.

I read a story once about someone who lived in a severely cold area. Their cabin had a covered porch around the entire cabin, they stacked split firewood around the entire perimeter, floor to ceiling and then did a second layer. The firewood provided a wind break. They used wood from the inside layers first, the layers also protected them when going out to get wood. They eventually lost the protection of the wood as they used it, but it was closer and closer to spring.

Build a covered walkway to the outhouse! You could do it section by section so you can take your time. Each section could have their own roof at varying heights so they fit under/over each other. I think it's a Japanese style. Even if it takes you 5 years to finish the full length, you'll still be able to enjoy it for decades. Especially when you get older. Think about not having to poop in a bucket because it raining or snowing. It could actually be pleasant to walk outside in the rain, fully dry. You may even want to build more walkways to other things like the outdoor kitchen and bathhouse. You don't wanna be drudging through the snow right after your sauna, right? It would look rad at night too if there are lights on it so you don't have to walk in the dark with the Blair Witch. You can keep em off when you're not outside.

Hi Shawn, I'm laughing at myself as you pickup those heavy pieces of wood and pile them up for the winter, those are HEAVY pieces of wood, I'd be struggling to move them around and you're not even phased by the weight, you are definitely in shape after all the years you've been doing all this heavy labor. Fun video, I'm glad you've got the cabin built and livable for the winter, I look forward to your fine tuning the cable's interior and the outbuildings I know you're going to build like you did at the previous cabin. Your adventure in the wilderness definitely gives a lot of us a mental escape from the city grind in concrete hell. Thank you for helping me get away briefly from a life I don't enjoy but have no viable escape in the near future. You have inspired me to leave the city once I retire if only for brief trips to the wild, as a young man I spent copious amounts of time camping, hiking, fishing in the remote woods and I will return again, living in the city is mentally stifling. Thank you Shawn.

Nice. My father who just passed this summer at 92, taught me how to split wood as a child. A valuable tip for camping or survival. We had a huge branch break off a poplar tree near my house. I was away camping. My neighbour told my Dad he would bring his chainsaw over...by the time he returned, my Dad had the thing limbed and half done cutting it into 4ft sections.

It’s like that so he can adjust the post when the cabin settles, but he’s been pretty busy getting the cabin winterized. Maybe a good spring project or a good rainy day job.

Build like a book case the depth of your logs and then put your wood stacking it up to the top just like books. It will save lots of space and allow you to have more wood inside. Then do the same outside along the wall outside and you can put a tarp cirtain in front to keep the wet and snow off it. Wood will be drying while off the ground. Just a thought for you.

Perhaps a quick & dirty lean too cover over the fire wood would be a good investment of time. Everything is work... ;-)

Are you planning to build a covered wood store close to or adjoined to the cabin? I’d have a wood store porch on the side with a door both interior and exterior. That way you could stock it up from outside & take it from inside. Just a thought. Would be a great system.
