Having left the hollers of Kentucky 15 years ago, Raylan Givens now lives in Miami, a walking anachronism balancing his life as a U.S. Marshal and part-time father of a 15-year-old girl. His hair is grayer, his hat is dirtier, and the road in front of him is suddenly a lot shorter than the road behind. A chance encounter on a desolate Florida highway sends him to Detroit. There he crosses paths with Clement Mansell, aka The Oklahoma Wildman, a violent, sociopathic desperado who's already slipped through the fingers of Detroit's finest once and aims to do so again. Mansell's attorney, formidable Motor City native Carolyn Wilder, has every intention of representing her client, even as she finds herself caught between cop and criminal, with her own game afoot as well. These three characters set out on a collision course in classic Elmore Leonard fashion, to see who makes it out of the City Primeval alive.

Raylan being so clueless throughout this series is one of the many reasons it doesn't work. Where have all his great instincts gone? He use to be able to investigate people so well. It takes him nearly 7 episodes to come to the conclusion that some cops are bent?! Also what purpose does Carolyn even serve here? She's a corrupt lawyer who is just a nasty piece of work. Watching those two interact is like watching two actors CGI-ed opposite each other, zero spark.

Mansel was an unhinged that Raylan wasn't totally accustomed to. Boyd had a familiarity that Raylan knew how to combat accordingly. Clement was off the chain. He knew something was off, but was struggling to piece it all together. (Which I think is a big reason why he would ultimately quit. He knew his time was up and this combined with wanting to be there for Willa more made his decision easier.)
In the end, Raylan figured out how to get him and of course, it's the only way he knows how.

My only problem with this scene is that Raylan claims he's never seen someone as lucky as Mansel. Boyd was a masterclass at skating on charges, and he didn't need or have help from a corrupt cop.
Boyd's ability to skate on charges made Mansel look like an amateur. Mansel needed help from the inside to skate, Boyd didn't.

Boyd almost certainly spent more of his adult life in prison than out of it. Boyd had been in prison before the series started, went to prison in season 1, went to prison again in season 3, and was in prison for years between the end of season 5 and the end of this season. Not sure what the exact timeframe of the original Justified was but Boyd got together with Ava before season 2, got back into crime at the end of season 2, married her in season 3 and she was not visibly pregnant by the time he was arrested in season 5, so the whole thing probably happened in less than six months. It only seems like a long time because so much happened and we saw all of it. In universe Raylan came back to Harlan and had Boyd in and out of prison 3 times in a few months before he was locked up seemingly for good. Mansel killing a judge and not even getting jail time is definitely a step up from that. (Boyd is also a lot more cunning than Mansel, so his escapes seem less like pure luck.)

I almost feel like that line from Raylan was foreshadowing that big thing that happens end of the season.

Boyd seemed to rely less on luck and more on meticulous planning

@@MainTopmastStaysail He got together with Ava in Season 2, never married her and Boyd was not arrested until Season 6 (not season 5). The timeframe of the series is about 2.5 years.

This show was terrible. The last 10 minutes with the OG cast and Boyd is the only 10 minutes you need to watch.
