This is probably the best McGilchrist interview I've heard. Thank you.
I concur. Great expression of the more nuanced aspects of intellect. Although his lecture at Darwin College last week was quite literally one of the greatest and most culturally pertinent speeches in the last I don’t know, 75 years. Wisdom so clear and profound that it stops you in your tracks.
Ian McGilchrist area of study should be a part of almost any discussion these days. His material seems so essential and basic these days as an antidote to rigid scientism
here here!!
Iain’s excitement is infectious and uplifting and in the moment. He truly is the explorer of reality and brings a freshness and newness to that which is always fresh and new and he has a wonderful empathy and compassion…..such a blessing to humanity
This is exactly what i needed to hear today. I have been working through changes in perspective, and trying to logically see what is best, while knowing that intuition can find a way better. It is difficult letting go of that dominant logical perspective, i sway heavily between the 2 approaches, but thanks to Iain, just listening to him has helped me see better.
I can't recommend "the master and the emissary enough'... soul spirit ration history discovery. Such a deep book
This was such a great dialogue and interview!
One part in particular stuck out when you asked more about the inner critic and creativity. 58:15 Because it's something I've tried to explain but one that seemed almost nonsensical and I'm glad it's shared.
"Everytime we say, 'I know', we close down again on the familiar that we are trying to get away from. A lot of time, in creation passes, in what appears to be unfruitful openess to things, without any conclusions being drawn. But it is only in that Wise Silence of not saying and not doing, that things will begin to reveal themselves to us."
How does McGilchrist manage to look like a painting of a well-brushed terrier?
This was a wonderful conversation, and pleasure to listen to. Thank you.
A beautiful conversation. Cheers and kudos, Damien...and superb as always, Iain.
Iain is a gift to humanity. Thank you for having him on!
Iain McGilchrist. Phenomenal as always.
I’ve watched lots of Ian’s talks and I have to tell you that you really understand the material and that understanding really got to the heart of some questions I’ve been dying for Ian to answer. Wonderful job.
This is a Masterpiece.
Bless you both ❤
This was such an important conversation in so many places - but especially toward the end where he seemed to be describing my own way of thinking where sometimes I feel some idea or sense of belief coming through - but I judge it and look for how it fits with "reality" - and if it doesn't there is a very strong impulse to reject it. I hope I can remember to take a moment and let it breathe a little in the future and see what happens. Sometimes the odd - not "reality" comes through very strong - but mostly I live in the regular world of boxes within boxes, order and lanes, rules and norms.
I'd like to hear Iain interviewed with Douglas Gabriel who helped write the initial Star Wars themes due to his knowledge of Anthroposophy ie: Rudolph Steiner. What a great talk that would be. Mean while, this was also really nice to listen to so thanks to you both.
A master class: an entirely new mythos, a new paradigm of our relationship to “reality”. Thanks for a great interview.
As a window cleaner, I approve.
Certain works of science fiction (as well as being a student of Ian's ever since "The Master and His Emissary" was published)have transformed and awakened awareness/attention to the full human endowment; to a new found wholeness in the midst of global societal fragmentation and collapse. In another of Damien's videos, he is the only teacher I know of who can link the Canopus in Argos Doris Lessing's sci fi novels starting with "Shikasta" and Olaf Stapledon's novel, "Starmaker" with Ian's work. I am interested in pursuing this link with anyone who has had a similar glimpse of the full spectrum of what it means to be alive. For instance, in "Shikasta", Shammat is the left hemisphere taking over the entire organism and gobbling up everything in its path....Johor is the mythos of the whole human and the harmony of the geometric cities prior to the collapse, due to an unavoidable misalignment, is a society of whole humans embodying and resonant with the underlying forces of the Universe... "Starkmaker" explores these themes in a journey through all space and time....
Thanks for creating such a good interview. Many interviews with McGilchrist end up much the same, but you asked some very interesting questions that I haven't heard him address before. I really enjoyed it, and it looked like Iain did too.
Thanks for listening
I've listened to quite a few interviews with Iain McGilchrist. This is a very good one. Thank you very much for that! Excellent. 😊
Very much agree. A lot of 'Ah ha' moments for me in this one.
This interview was beautiful and profound, thank you.
I remember the change from contactable to complicated and mechanical organisations. In the old days the public would ring you up on the phone and you would be two humans trying to work something out. Then they brought in things like call centres and customer service type sections which became like a buffer between the public and the organisation. Things took longer to sort out. I always thought this approach was designed so that the organisation wasn't seen to be getting complaints/criticism. It was more difficult for the public to get at the organisation.
The map is not the territory. Very enjoyable, thank you. 1:18:37 when you'd asked to the effect at the beginning 'has the left hemisphere got bigger?', i thought yes, but in the sense explained here... it has enlarged via its colonisation of the exterior world.
1:29:37-1:31:01 This is everything. God, I shed a tear.
great dr. Mcgilchrist as always. 😊
great interview, in fact its the best I've seen with McGill!
We are only remembering the ancient wisdom which has been smothered by the egoic mind ….those of us being here are blessed to hear this what I call a sainted consciousness or being in the non dual state and being aware of it.
Meaning is the edge of being. Significant discussion!
As a right hemisphere dominate individual, I fully agree with Dr McGilchrist, thank you for this wonderful interview….Peace !
When we will get tired to overlook, will be a moment of “oh come on, it was always there “…
2b or not 2b really had me laughing .. but Damien! How could you not ask Iain for his interpretation of Lem’s Solaris? Other that that it was an excellent exchange. Iain McGilchrist is fantastic! His latest book is worth every penny. Thank you both!
So in quantum physics there is the particle, wave duality.. does our left hemisphere see the particle. And the right perceive the wave?
My hobby is writing fiction and I've found these discussions from McGilchrist, Vervaeke, Pageau, Peterson, etc. to be very helpful in expanding my 'symbolic toolset' if you will.
Thank you!!!!
The onendaga. Are remembering pre_ flood
"The Mice had made It"..Ahahah Love That!
❤❤❤
It’s because Christianity tried to make the idea of a man fused with the idea of “the absolute” “god”, now we suffer for the contradictions of this socially constructed, materially bound world. Telecom is the mythic dawn!
Since Mcgilchrist describes what a society would look like that succeeded in LH completely dominating RH, it can be said that AI could prove useful to saving our civilization by outcompeting those individuals who are doing so; thereby, putting selective pressure on the trait of RH having supremacy over the LH.
👍👍❗💗
Wisdom from ‘The Skye Sage’ thanks or is the Sage of Skye
Sky Sage of Skye
I guess it’s time for explicit sarcasm. 😂 Meet the bullies with some “good-natured, good-ole-boy, can’t take a joke? JK!” I have been indoctrinated into bullying culture from birth and was an elementary school art teacher for 30 years. Deliberate obnoxiousness. Bullies are on top because of the addictive fun of kicking down.
I was raised by rebellious Southern Baptist Neo Liberals. Listened to drunk racist cop friends of my parents, brag about brutality and planting drugs. And of course, everyone assumed everyone was Christian. Dangerous otherwise. Women and children shut up and down. The ‘merkin way.
It’s hard to soften such a constipated system. 😂
Loving the conversation, dudes! ❤
I feel Walter Russell is the true scientist
The angels are washing their windows above the world whose jumble sale goes spinning on below.
Isn’t the delineation between right and left a marker of the left hemisphere at work?
It's very obvious when you look at a physical brain. And I could add that McGilchrist emphasises the union of the two, it's not either/or or both/and, but both either/or _and_ both/and. Not the most catchy phrase, I admit 😊
Damn hippies. ☹️
🤣🤣🤣 I can’t 🤣🤣🤣 stop!
So there will always the unknowable. Lol
Inner critic: You can't write, you're lazy

Both as a lecturer in literature as well as a psychiatrist, what does he think of psychedelics?
No idea, but I suspect his opinion would be negative.
Thanks. Well done on the interview man.@@DamienWalter
He might be interested in the work being done at Imperial college relating to the therapeutic use of Psilocybin in a clinical setting. This is a subject close to Rupert Sheldrake's heart and so he might not be so antipathetic.
In one recent interview I was watching (here: czcams.com/video/dogVQDydRGQ/video.html) I seem to remember him saying they were uninteresting from his research’s standpoint. Which, in itself, is interesting
I saw a podcast they did together recently and unless I missed it, psychedelics weren't discussed.@@geoffsmith673
"Metaphorically, I was cleaning there Windows" 🤣 Brilliant. ImcG
Oh! This is welcome! :)
What does he mean by intact traditional society?
I believe he means any society before "enlightment era"
Quote of the year: There aren't any machines. 01:13:33 Brilliant! I mean it, it is profound and very important for our age and the coming time of more and more machine thinking - which, I think, will lead to a backlash on a grand scale.
This was a bit too dense for me to follow without some kind of in-depth context for reference. I think what I need to do is check out a couple of this fellows books from my local library, and then come back to this video at a later time. Thank you, regardless. Always wonderful to find a source of new (and unfamiliar) ideas to explore!
I would start with (maybe just the first half of) The Master and His Emissary. If you enjoyed that, The Matter With Things should keep you occupied for decades to come 😉
Thank you for the 4:3 format and the interview.
48:00 The Truth of a story is not in the literal circumstances but in the experiences, relationships and meaning. Harry Potter is not real, Hogwarts does not exist, fiery spells from wands are not a reality. The coming of age drama, challenges and relationships in society with peers and authority, are all very real and truthful, which many children and adults around the world related to and recognised.
Campbell said that rituals are myth brought to life. We bring our myths to life through rituals - hanging stockings up and leaving gifts for Santa and his reindeers makes the story feel real for children. A sense of magic made real through ritual.
Faith, lies between doubt and certainty, And in our reflection, is forever question -anything else is Dogma.
Faith is Majik.
Dogma= amGOD
The Hue-man brain needs to unite both spheres. Male and female unites in the alchemical marriage producing the Christ child.
This guy is making it difficult to innerstand.
Are there any books that have been clearly inspired by McGilchrist’s work?
John Cleese’s book ‘Creativity: A Short and Cheerful Guide’
You asked question's that I've long awaited from I.McC ❣
Who helped King James rewrite the bable?
I wonder if the dominant hemisphere can swing from left to right and various times in a life?
You conducted this interview/discussion expertly, great work!
Well done, your questions and prompts evoked some great stuff from Iain.
I just wish someone would ask him his views on gaming and social media! I have yet to hear him speak about these modern technologies explicitly.
Artificial realities aren’t present. They are representations.
What a fantastic discussion, thank you both!
Have you read the essay “man, android and machine” by Philip Kindred?
Yes. But a long time ago now.
13:30 and attention ~ the drive toward ever shorter forms of experience (thinking about a short form social media) for not just the younger generations, is messing with our concept of the world. Okay, rant over, now back in to this excellent video !
Shorts are a problem in that I find.
Fantastic! Well done Damien. I love your reference to 2001 and unplugging the left hemisphere (Hal).
Loved that too. Shutting down the default mode network and going on a psychedelic trip.
Excelent conversation!
Thank you Gentlemen 🙏
Shakespeare is only two and a half pencils?......would that be 2b or not 2b?
Very good, stealing it.
Nice one. The right hemisphere at work.
Is Shakespeare 2b or not 2b? Shakespeare is not who he appears 2B. Francis Bacon is the author of Shakespeare and the king James bable. 🤺
yeah and you have the photos to prove it..@@SkyeSage17
I thought Shakespeare used quills.
So glad you connected with this man, he has such wisdom and his revelations are fascinating and yet a little frightening with regard to his theory about our ways of thinking and where its leading us to,,,
Thanks for joining Les
What is happening is frightening.
It certainly helps explain the madness
