In western style water glass is placed in right side. In our tradition water is placed on left because we use right hand to eat.
Strictly no any alcohol is served in our tradition.
Head should bend down while eating to respect earth and look upward while drinking to respect sky.
Vettilai thaambalam is placed to complete 6 types of tastes.
Self serving is not there in Tamil tradition.
Tie a thread around stomach and stop eating when it breaks. This controls how much you eat.
Food should not be spread to the whole of your hand. Use only the fingers.
No any fingers should point outward while you have or feed food. Because each finger represent each panchabootham. From growing to cooking all five panchabootham get involved.
Before starting to eat you must taste each food by asking the host to serve less or if you already know the taste of foods you simply start eating. Because you can not waste or leave any food once it is served.
Leftovers or leaving foods on your plate or leaf means the food, the gesture, behavior or the host is bad or not satisfying.
There are lot more dinning manners in our tradition. Not a lot of people know about it. I hail from a traditional Tamil catholic family. All these traditions are strictly followed in my family. I studied in a city school in modern culture. But no any traditions and culture can stand with our traditions. I have completed my schooling and degree in modern city. But I have never invited any of my fiends home to dine. Because it is easy to practice western style. But Tamil tradition is really hard to learn and Practice as you need to know the facts and reason behind everything. Please do a video about our dinning traditions and rules.
