Tim Doner is an avid language learner from New York. He studies a number of languages and we met when in NYC to appear in a Canadian broadcast on polyglots. In this video Tim talks about his experience of a French exchange he took part in.

French is my first language and I can confirm Richard Simcott's French is very good.

***** His French is also good. He seems to have a good amount of vocabulary and he is grammatically correct, but his pronunciation isn't as fluid as Simcott's (although understandable for anyone learning another language).
Le français de Tim et de Richard est excellent. On n'entend même pas d'accent. Ravi de savoir que vous avez eu tout les deux d'excellentes expériences en France.

J'adore vos deux Français respectifs. Il y a pour chacun d'entre vous un petit accent anglo-saxon, mais comme vous parlez très bien Français, votre accent n'est qu'une touche de charme à votre discours.

Tim, ton français est très bon mais si tu veux aller plus loin (et tu as l'air d'être de ce genre de personnes qui aiment aller plus loin), tu dois faire plus attention à la manière dont tu prononces le son "ou" et le son "l", par exemple, ton "oui" sonne comme un "ui". Et tu oublies parfois de faire la liaison entre la consonne qui finalise un mot et la voyelle qui commence le mot suivant. Ce ne sont que des détails mais ça pourra peut être te servir pour effacer ton accent anglais. I can translate that in english, but i dont think you really need it.

Mais, pour parler une langue ce n'est pas important si on a un accent ou non, si tu le parles bien grammaticalement et les sons sont claires, ça suffit ! :)

@jj being able to speak a foreign is not a matter of being gifted, or being a genius, every single human being on earth is capable of learning a foreign language there is a list of " the world's most difficult languages; Mandarin chinese, Arabic, Russian, polish, japanese, farsi , hindi,urdu, hungarian,lithuanian, Turkish easiest; spanish ,portuguese, italian, french, & English is the lingua franca spoken by almost 589 million people world wide followed by spanish , french & portuguese to learn a language only takes motivation why you want to learn that target language, passion, & discipline. exposure makes it easy though you don't have to live in the country to learn your target language, but if the person has the financial needs to do it go for it!! Mostvpeople cannot afford to travel to just learn a languague with today's technology one can easily find apps on line to learn languages from their own cells , free Duolingo believe when i say It Works!! Its not going to teach you a language to a c1 or c2 level, but is a great tool to make you talk in an easy language as Spanish, italian, portuguese or french babel , busa,fluent you are very affordable , but from my experience pimsleur was the best learning method that i was lucky to find it could be expensive though it usually & periodically has discs on sale it ranges from 14.99 cents when they have a sale to 99.00 dlls to 1,200 dlls for an advanced course it consist of repetition classes from a native speaker & take my word it works!!! You seem young & i know you can do it ( if i did it at age 64 that should be a piece of cake for you good luck!!! Go for it!!!
Did you learn how to become fluent in another language?
@Theo Eguia i learn how to speak 2 languages fluenty all by myself spending 3 hours per nigth for the last 46 yrs since 1974 , i work in the hotel industry in Las Vegas since march 1971 but back then i spoke my native Spanish, then i learned English & Italian 1\2 year in 1973 i English &Spanish & Italian fluently at the age of 14 then 42 yrs later i learn french & Portuguese at 60 yrs of age presently in 2019 I'm 64 yrs old i speak 3 languages on a c1 level my mother tongue Spanish of course English, & Italian. Then portuguese i have a b2 level & french a b1 level which is my weakest language, but i can handle a conversation without being afraid to make mistakes people will have enough sense to perceive my mistakes since I'm trying to speak in their language i always remember my mother has always told ;" dont be afraid to try something in life, life is full of challenges you never know your potential until you 've try" & as usual she is right !!! anyone can learn a language or anything just motivate yourself & you'll be surprised!!! try my friend anything you want to do good luck in your journey!!!

They are very very good! I can hear i slight accent showing that they are english! But they french is clearly european ( France)
Vous avez un peu d'accent. Il me semble que Richard a un accent québécoise, et que Tim a un accent américaine. Mais, pour quelqu'uns qui parlent plus de 20 langue, vous parlez français incroyablement bien.

A statistic I heard is that about 40% of French students in general high schools (i.e. not vocational schools, etc.) choose the "L" (languages and literature) track. (The other options are "S" for the physical sciences and "ES" for economics and other social sciences.) It sounds as if Tim was taking the L-track courses while he was there, so he would have been surrounded by students who were studying at least two foreign languages--one being English, of course. Also, many (?) French teens have the dream of working in another country or of working in a field--such as business--where it's helpful or expected to be at least bilingual. Those positions are competitive, so I presume that some (not all) French students work hard to master at least English and preferably one other European language.
Richard et Tim, quand j'écoute cette vidéo, pour moi c'est tout audible, que vous deŭx avez vecu pour une periode plus longue en France dans une situation d'immersion. Je peŭx écuter ça de votre manière de vous exprimer. Donc c'est le français des deŭx gens priviligés. Il y a beaucoup d'années j'ai passé DEŬX SEMAINES en France parlant français toute la journée, mais cela ne suffit pas apprendre parler un français naturel comme vous deŭx. Sincères amitiés, Fasulye
Je vis en France et suis Belge nous avons la même langue francophone que je maîtrise parfaitement, il parle bien même si il y à quelques fautes de syntaxes et de conjugaisons, concernant ce qu'il dit sur le fait que nous aimons et parlons deux à trois langues couramment cela est en partie vrai, en fait à l'école on nous apprends l'anglais en première langue la seconde c'est au choix, l'espagnol, l'allemand et en troisième langue chinois ou arabe (en général), les français aiment les langues

Richard as presque un accent québécois :) j'en suis une et parfois dans certaine phrase on l'entend un peu !

"Multilinguism" in Europe isn't a prerogative of only a few countries anymore, but we're still really far from saying that everybody in France as well as Sweden, Norway and Holland - countries whose people are unanimously considered proficient in EN - speaks more than 2 languages. Anyway, I'm glad to see that things are getting better and better and that countries like Italy and Spain are now moving in the right direction! Obviously, there's so much room for improvements left, but still... :)
I cannot bear watching this! Compared to these two geniuses I am so insignificant! I don't even possess proper command of my native language.

Oui c'est clair l'école alsacienne ce n'est pas comparable au système scolaire français "normal". Mon expérience rejoint tout à fait la tienne ;)
Il y a ici au Brésil un homme que détient le record pour le plus grand numéro de langues étrangères... il est d'origine libérienne et il est dans le Guinness. Je pense que dans quelques ans Tim lui dépassera.

mais sont trop fainéants pour les apprendre =) en effet comme tout est traduit en français (série, film,..) nous n'en avons pas trop l'utilité par contre ceux qui ont des origines parlent souvent 3 langues, français, arabe/portugais (patois pas le fosra) et anglais/allemand,moi j'aime l'anglais et l'espagnol.

Parfaitement, et historiquement c'est plutôt les français de France (et j'en suis un) que les Québécois qui ont un accent, au 17ème siècle le peuple, en France comme au Canada français, parlaient plus ou moins comme parlent les Québécois aujourd'hui. Et puis avoir un accent n'est pas une erreur, même nous les français qui sommes très à cheval sur la prononciation avons des tonnes d'accents différents chez nous.
Sort of. In the nineteenth century half the French nation, those in the southern half, spoke a language that was similar to Catalan. In the north they spoke many distinct dialects or languages too. Québécois has preserved some of the older forms especially from the north west where many of their ancestors originated. Modern French of course derives from the Paris dialect. So Québécois isn’t really old French, but a dialect. And of course they have many anglicisms such as bécosse and braker (not sure of spelling, but it means to brake).

Tim est très intelligent mais il n'est pas naturellement doué pour les langues. On sent vraiment la différence avec Richard.
En même temps il est jeune c'est normal il a le temps pour progresser
Tim's French is quite okay, but he's not fluent. Quite a few mistakes, even some severe ones that non-natives would spot.
Tim Doner's French is really good though.
Tim should focus on less languages now, and really get good at them. Because saying five sentences in 20 languages doesn't grant you permission to say you speak them. People care too much about quantity, not enough about quality.
+Sym Eof Even if you make some mistakes it doesn't mean you're not fluent I've seen some other videos where Tim speaks french and apart from his accent that immediately gives him away it's safe to say that he's fluent in french plus the mistakes he made were very very few I've spotted 5 (2 of them were small mistakes) Richard also makes one mistake his accent is perfect though.
