I’m always disappointed to see the lackluster reactions for Hero. I was so excited whenever they announced him.
The amount of DQ Hero anti-hype was disturbing to watch. He was by far the most important character missing from smash, and they did a pretty great job with him.
DQ is the oldest, still existing video game rpg series, and it's the series that brought RPGs to consoles and into popularity, and what most other typical turn based Japanese rpgs like Final Fantasy also followed. It is still one of the most popular video game series in Japan, it might still sit on the second place next to Pokemon.
Dragon Ball creator Akira Torijama is the lead artist behind the whole series, he was working on this series before Dragon Ball even came to the west. Pointing this out because many people throwing the goku jokes think the series is just copying his artstyle, but it's literally him who created all these characters.
sadly the series never catch on in the west like FF or Pokemon did because when it came out in the west Dragon Ball wasn't even a thing here, so the localization team changed all of Toriyama artworks into generic western fantasy artworks, which also clashed with Toriyama's animeish monster designs. Overall, the ports didn't do a good job with presenting the appeal of the games, and Enix stopped porting them after the 3rd game.
In all honestly, it kinda surprising it took THIS LONG to be on smash! Dragon quest was "THE GAME" in the past I heard and they have like 3 or 4 games on the ds alone. To be honest; I would been disappointed if they didn't haven't since it's a legendary rpg. I'm not even a huge Dragonquest fanboy, but I know this was way Overdue! Heck, I only own 1 because I was busy!
Personally i'm glad dragon quest is finally in smash and they brought the other heroes as alts as well which is just so damn cool.

Games can be immensely important and still completely unrelevant to the single person. I know that Link to the Past, FF7 etc. are integral to the development games have gone through since then, but that doesn't mean I need to like them.
I'm just hype that both of these Smash reveals actually got CG trailers rather than some of Smash 4's DLC characters being limited with just edited gameplay footage(which has been done well).
Simmons' happiness during the Banjo trailer was everything.

Glad that somebody is happy at both because practically every reaction I'm seeing is completely forgetting about DQ. And fair enough since DQ is more popular in Japan, but still, this is huge. I have no doubt that when morning comes in Japan and most people find out they'll be losing their shit over there.

I haven’t even played a DQ game, but I know it’s a beloved RPG series and I just recently bought 11 to play so therefore I am really excited! The trailer was awesome, and you can really tell a lot of love went into this character and the alternate costumes. With that said, your guys reactions, especially Max and the ridiculous, “another sword character” is so dumb.

Okay. so after rewatching the direct via this reaction vid and reading the comments, I feel that that people are taking Max's and the doods' reaction to the The Hero's inclusion in Smash too personal. I'm sure they're aware of how big and important DQ is in Japan and how it defined JRPGs. Hell, even Max thinks it's cool and knows that fans will be happy. Sure, they all made some sarcastic remarks but you all need to understand something. Even though DQ is one of the most important video game franchises out there, it's not their cup of tea and they're allow to express how they personally feel about it. At the end of the day, it's their opinion and their opinion shouldn't affect how you all feel. Best not to take them personal.
Personally speaking, I haven't played a lot of the games besides 8 but I'm genuinely interested and excited in seeing what they can do while also trying them out myself. Those of you that are also excited for them, I'm glad and I hope you all enjoy The Hero when they come out this Summer. Besides, they got Banjo, you guys got The Hero. Everyone wins as Sakurai is working his ass off to make all these unreal things happen with Smash. This is a time to be happy and celebrate! But with that said....

Least surprising my ass. The only reason people expected a DQ character is because of the constant leaks that Vergeben and co. kept doing. There was absolutely no hints or anything otherwise and no the Brave codename could have meant a number of characters.
This is literally Ryu's reveal all over again except that one was worse because they literally put a trailer in the game's files.

Man, who could have known at the time that they were going to be watching the trailer for the biggest game and one of the biggest cultural pillars in the world the coming years: Animal Crossing: New Horizons. It is crazy how long ago the pre-pandemic era feels now.
So it looks like Erdrick/Loto from Dragon Quest III, along with the heroes of Dragon Quest IV, VIII, and the recently-released XI, are all going to be playable with their own set of spells/skills from the series, and the other installments heroes including those from II, V, VI, VII, IX, and X are all part of a final smash.
And the Kaclang spell is probably going to be annoying as hell to deal with since it's basically an invincibility stalling move.
Kaclang is likely to be easily punishable because if it works how it does in the games you aren't gonna be able to get out of it until a certain amount of time passes

I'm not gonna lie: Nintendo killed it this year. From the revival of old franchises like Contra and Panzer Dragoon, to the Banjo Reveal, to the Breath of the Wild sequel announcement; this year truly had something for everyone.

god, you guys are spoiled for graphics. Hearing you knock anything that isn't HD hyper-realistic is a little hype killing.
I guess it's also because they play more on PC and more powerful consoles, so they will always have these slights with the Switch. It doesn't devalue the games or the system, but by force of habit, it is something you come to consider at a glance.

if you need help getting hyped over Dragon Quest hero getting in smash, the version with the fin ear helmet has the badass name of Solo and his sword looks like Voltrons.....there ya go, he's a sword character....with turn based RPG powers, no matter how you wanna try and shit on him, thats gonna make for an interesting opponent or character to play.
To be fair for the Luminary, a DQ character finally being in Smash is a BIG DEAL for Japan. A DQ rep has been their number 1 most wanted thing for a long time. I don't even like Smash Bros, and I'm happy for the Japanese players finally getting someone they actually care about.
The hero's for japan, banjo's for the west. It's as simple as that.
The Luminary and 3 other Legendary Heroes from Dragon Quest is for everybody who appreciates one of the single greatest video game series in all of history, and Banjo is for a niche market of N64 and Rare fans who are just glad to see some recognition of a series they used to like but has been dormant for a really long time but everyone saw coming anyway.
Dragon Quest was the epic, mind-blowing announcement of the entire direct. Banjo was ok.
@@the-NightStar I think Banjo was more Mind-blowing because he's been dormant for so long. Dragon Quest is a huge franchise with a Special Edition coming to switch so it makes sense to put representatives of the game into smash. Banjo's had 3 games and the last one came out over a decade ago. Not to mention he's owned by Nintendo's competition in the console market.
I'm not trying to say anything about the quality of either franchise since I've played neither. I just think most of the people excited about banjo are in the west while most of the people excited for DQ are in Japan. Each series has many fans in both parts of the world but I think one has a majority over the other.

Nintendo has a direct every few months, when they announce BIG titles, so it's not a big problem, I got what I wanted from 3rd party, TW3, with its 250h of quality content. If it looks like 720p low quality preset on pc @30fps, I'm very happy.
Marius whatever game they announce now won’t be out until late next year or else they would have announced it here. By then it won’t be long until the next Nintendo system and everyone will be occupied with the new consoles.

@The One Who Wrote This Makes sense. They all have pretty similar skill sets, and I think this was the best way to go for the character.
It's a shame the Dragon Quest characters are seemingly the butt of everyone's jokes here. Dragon Quest VIII is literally one of my favourite games of all time and it's genuinely a must play game. I love the series.
Plus, stinky opinion here, it's better than any Banjo game.

To be fair though, I think Cloud's design (whilst not only more well-known) contrasts more with most of the Fire Emblem characters than the Dragon Quest heroes do.
