For some years I've thought that the best thing that could happen to Baba is never to become President. If ever he ascended to power it would ruin his legacy.
Agwambo is known as a champion of the people and a defender of the rights of the people against oppressive governments. If he became the head of state, he would become one of the leaders against whose oppressive governments the rights of the people had to be defended. How so?
As Prime Minister, although he had limited authority, he made statements that went back on his activist record. Using the same line that had been used by government leaders such as Moi, PM Odinga told foreign governments criticizing the government to stop meddling in Kenya's internal affairs and - even more surprisingly - told off the civil society, of which he had previously been a member, for calling out government excesses.
Even as opposition leader he has shown evidence - for anyone who cares to see it - that if he came to power he wouldn't be much different if at all from others who have ruled Kenya. For instance, he tried to get the courts to gag the media from covering the case between Fidel Odinga's widow and the Odinga family.
Even more tellingly, he used his connections to Gideon Moi, whose family own the Standard Media Group, to get a sensational headline story about the case removed by the Standard after it had already been published.
It's reasonable to believe that, just like Uhuru and Ruto, President Odinga would easily pass legislation restricting media freedom in order to shield the actions of his government. Probably in a Raila presidency the police would kill anti-government protestors, just like they have done under Uhuru, Kibaki and Ruto.
These things don't show that Agwambo is a particularly flawed person, much less that he would be an evil leader, but rather that he's not a saint and is just like most of us. Baba is so charismatic, so likeable and so indefatigable as opposition leader that many people expect him to be a saint.
I'm sure that, after reading my explanation, you'll understand why I believe that Baba's legacy as a man of the people is best secured if he never becomes head of state.

When you see everything through tribal lenses, you fail to see so much. If you ask me, I have far greater admiration for Raila than for Uhuru or Kibaki, and I hope my admiration is not just influenced by my tribal identity (I'm Luo). That's why I want the best legacy for Baba and have written about his infallibility in a loving way that does not come from a place of malice. It would satisfy an emotional craving among us Luo if Agwambo became head of state, just like it temporarily satisfied an emotional craving among Black Americans when Obama became President. Yet Black Americans today look back at President Obama as a traitor. Realistically, Raila will not manage to turn Kenya into a paradise any more than Nelson Mandela turned South Africa into a paradise. I hope you're aware that Black South Africans today concede that Mandela's presidency did not change their lives as they had hoped, even though Mandela must have done his best. Yet a Raila presidency might do to Agwambo's image among Kenyans what government power did to the image of former Burmese icon Aung San Suu Kyi among her erstwhile global admirers. _Mago kende!_
