I started watching Fela live at his African Shrine from the young age of 16. I would sneak out of school at Government College Ojo (now LASU) all the way to Pepple Street Ikeja. If you are familiar with Lagos, you would know the distance travelled on Fridays or Saturdays by the young boy to watch his idol. The day Fela passed on in 1997 was the saddest day of my life. He left a vacuum never to be filled. Continue to rest in peace Genius.

Wow, we went to the same secondary school! I also attended a government college in Ojo. When I was five years old, my dad used to take me to an African shrine. However, my grandma always argued with him and told him not to take me there. The last time I went to the shrine, I went on stage and started playing with Baba's instrument. Just as I was about to perform, Baba saw me playing with his drum and hit me on the head. He then asked my father to come and take me off the stage. After that, I stopped going to the shrine. we don't use to miss last Friday of the month. i usually perform fela song in secondary school then.

Fela was a master at how to use the "peak" and "valley" within a song, to accent with plateaus, to use a back beat center and stretch as far as he could with it, constantly. One would be hard-pressed to find an artist whose every single album during the 1970s, every single one, is a masterwork, but it's true with Fela. This isn't just my opinion, it's fact. Don't believe me, just click on something to the right that you've never heard before from Fela's 70s work, and strap yourself in and get ready to be blown away.

Truth! He uses every inch of the musical landscape he created. Cosmic horn arrangements. Tony Allen has a lot to do with it. Nobody plays a trap set like that. NObody.

StooGP I’m now seeing that with his music. The next album I’ve never heard by him is better than the last one I heard. Which is saying something because that’s hard to accomplish.
