    Annotating is so fun and helpful.. with a classic, my pretentiousness just comes out (I love to convince myself that I’m a genius with in depth thoughts). I find that it also helps me pay more attention to the text and remember more as opposed to when I don’t tab something. I haven’t ventured as far as writing directly in my books (at least with books that aren’t classics), but I’ll get there eventually.

    I have ADHD and writing a small summary after each chapter helps me stay in the flow. It gives my eyes a break from just reading, and gives my hands AND brain something to DO. I do it on post-its on the title page of the chapter, and after finishing the book I'll combine all the notes into a bare-bones storyline in a reading journal. As a summary of the whole plot, story, and it shows me the pacing, too.

I can still read the book so I don't care that it has markings on it and it's kind of interesting to see what some other person that had it before me felt necessary or felt moved by! I’ve just started annotating and I LOVE it!! During the summer after a pretty terrible school year bec of being pretty much broken and betrayed by what I thought was a real friend I was just so unnecessarily stressed and anxious for no reason at all- I saw lots of people on tik tok showing off their annotated books and I thought it looked fun plus I used to love reading and really needed a distraction from the mental state I was in , and I didn’t know how to start at all. I watched loads of videos and yours finally gave me the starting points I needed, and I started annotating a book I’ve read before which btw turned out to be such a helpful thing to do- when u start annotating u focus so much on the actual annotating bec u don’t know how to do it than the actual story so if u annotate a story u already know what happens it gives u the time to actually focus on HOW to annotate or else u don’t normally understand the story as quickly bec ur not focusing on it as much, after annotating a book I’ve already read I pretty much got the “way” I guess of how I want to do it and then I began annotating new books no regrets at all and I feel so happy doing it too which was the main goal 💕

    I love seeing different coding systems with colors.
    I personally do yellow for important plot points because it's the basic, blue for beautifully established places or prose, green for favorite parts or parts that ellicite strong emotion for me, pink for strong character development or growth, things that I know I might go back to to make sense of something a character does when the shoe drops, and then orange for moments that make me laugh.

    I love all the pens you use, they're my go-tos as well. Also, I use zebra brush tip midliners to highlight -- they don't even bleed through dictionary pages. Also, I haven't tested any of them out, but they make specific highlighters for bibles which have very thin pages, so I imagine those highlighters wouldn't bleed.

    I love seeing how ppl annotate their books, that’s partly what motivated me to start doing it too! If anyone’s worried about starting to annotate, I would recommend using a pencil. That’s what I do (I started writing in my books pretty recently, i tried using tabs at first but i didn’t vibe with it) and i keep erasing and rewriting my notes so it’s great for me :) plus if worst comes to worst you can erase all your notes (carefully, it can rip pages and if the book’s ink is not very good it can fade under your eraser) to resell the book. You can probably do this with colored pencils but they tend not to get erased as easily. I also use post-it sometimes for longer thoughts if it doesn’t fit on the page. Since i tend not to use tabs, or color code, i put a cross in the margin next to the most important quotes so i can see them more easily when flipping through the book + i more often than not write little comments so i can remember why i underlined that part ^^

    For highlighters that don’t go through the page, I recommend erasable friction ones because the ink doesn’t sink into the page. I don’t know how long lasting they are, but they’ve worked well for me

    • @kaberroneill94
      @kaberroneill94 Před 2 lety +1

    If you’re hesitant about writing in books this is THE BEST tip ever, you can buy clear posted notes and place them on top of the text and annotate on there it’s all see through so you can read the book fine. You can also highlight the text on the posted note . Another options are erasable pens and highlighters they are honestly great and you can rub them out.

    i LOVE annotating books, especially classics!! i personally don't have a set method to annotating, i just annotate what feels right with the book. for instance, a book may be more character-driven, so i take note of the characterization (personality traits, how the mc interacts and evolves, etc.), while another book may be rich with themes. i would love to use highlighters, tabs, and colored pens but i'm so inconsistent and often lose commitment lol, that i need to use few materials as possible so i only use black gel ink pens to underline, circle, and scribble notes on the margins.
