Thanks man! A very fiddly process. I bought an x270 for €350 on eBay but with German keyboard. Replaced it with an illuminated one in my language. The X270 internals are arranged slightly differently, the process might be a bit easier than shown here. The annoying bit is the cables, be careful not to pinch them. Take photos as you go. These are fantastic little laptops for the price.

You have to give a thank you. It is a clear video. My 270 confused by having a dummy battery. My 15yr old disassembled then missed out one connection on the way back in- so I started over. The ariel wires were from different directions- there were 2 to many ends. The tutorial video was clear and it is working .

my one is X260 which is easier than x240. thanks a lot. it is extremely helpful. just a few things: 1. when you peel off the bronze-colour ribbon for trackpad and mouse clicks, better use a hair dryer to melt the glue first. if you peel it with force, you may damage the wire inside and the trackpad/mouse clicks may not work. 2. when you route and reroute the wires, do it gently and slowly as the plastic coating is very vulnerable and easy to break. 3. the screws and screw positions are not 100% accurate in the video, but you can work it out by yourself easily. 4. take your time to memorise and observe the positions or take photos at each step. thumbed up and subscribed.

    • @glaz126

@@NOEMi22871 The difference is not that big but the x270 is slightly better. better iGPU but if it's not something that you really care about the x260 is a great option. And I don't recommend both on Windows 11. It's night and day between 10 and 11 in terms of performances.

Great video, well articulated and clear. There was an extra screw on the keyboard that wasn't mentioned in the video on my machine. So just look out for that when you pull the keyboard. I also had to bent one of the other cables on my new keyboard to align it to the socket on the motherboard.

Thanks for the video. Very useful. Some tips for others doing the same replacement.
In my X260 the touchpad ribbon cable connects to a white port at one edge of the laptop. This ribbon needs to be disconnected to replace the keyboard. It's not obvious how to disconnect this port as it is unlike the others. Disconnecting is done by gently pulling out the small 2 black ears on the sides of the socket. Then you can easily pull out the cable as nothing holds it in the socket.
Also the two wider ribbon cables need to be in the right order (one on top of the other) before screwing the motherboard back on. Ordered mine the wrong way and then had to go back to fix it.

I bought my X260 for $80 from a pawn shop. It worked perfectly fine and everything, but as soon as I got home, some of the keys stopped working. It kept getting worse and worse over time and now random buttons don't work, only a few actually do.
I'm not too confident in actually doing this work myself, I miss working on older laptops where there would be a few screws to loosen and then I could turn it around and slide it out on the top. I am gonna buy the cheapest keyboard replacement I can find and try it though.

Thanks, came here thought there is another quicker way without removing everything 😢. But it surely is impossible also given the white plastic keyboard holder / insulator don't know what IBM thinkTeam thought when they padded the IBM ThinkPad X series keyboard, like this. I sale used X series more than any other brand in Malawi and offer up to 5years free technical support, so it's always a headache replacing these keyboards 😂😂😂 coz within the support period usually stuff like keyboards, batteries etc might face the unfortunate 😅. This is a great tutorial especially considering the need to logically disable batteries in bios before disconnecting is important. An addition would be just to ensure your well grounded before the whole procedure to avoid electromagnetic discharge

    @bartech TV: Hi,
Some keys of my Lenovo X270 keyboard were not working so I've decided to replace it myself.
I was very cautious and followed all best practices and could remove it successfully.
I plugged all the ribbon cables black and everything into its place.
The issue is now the laptop turns ON but the screen remains black.
I've tried to connect it to an external monitor (and keyboard/mouse) but it didn't work.
I have a big issue because when I wanted to connect the SSD drive to another laptop to access my data it asks for BITLOCKER key which I never set and I believe it is security protection from the old laptop.
So the only way to access them is to make that X270 laptop work again.
Could it be because of the CMOS?
    Could you please help?
    Thanks a lot.

If you can find the Lenovo part FRU 01HY319, it will allow you to use an NVMe drive in the X260. It only uses 2 lanes of PCIe rather than 4, but it's a big improvement over SATA. The part is meant for the T470P but it'll work in an X260.

The X200 is a far more superior and solid build - even the keyboard is superior than these newer flat keypads. The X270 has been designed to be more cost effective - it doesn't seem built to last or withstand shock or extreme conditions. The X200 was military grade toughness, combined with elegance and business travel. Still though, doesn't make sense there is no back panel to access the ram on the X270.
