      I was into hunting/shooting as a kid, and now in my thirties I have been getting back into it. I went trap shooting yesterday, and the gun club I went to had a lot of great, helpful members. I had a great time, and hit 12/25 my first time even firing my new shotgun. So I went to my local Dick's field and stream to get a choke tube for trap. The level of gatekeeping and douchebaggery I got trying to get advice at Dick's, they truly live up to their name. So, I'm just saying I appreciate the video! The guys at the club were super helpful, but I have a lot to learn with competition shooting. One simple question got guffaws and elitist attitude, I want to shoot, support 2nd amendment rights, maybe get back into hunting. You'd think I was at a fancy jewelry/clothing boutique with how elitist this boomer was acting (nothing against boomers, just for age reference). So thank you so much for this video! You taught me what the big box Dick's-head wouldn't.

    Great video. I tend to use the extended choke tubes and I don't know why the manufacturer doesn't include them. I know, cost, but I am going to say that many of us end up spending extra for the extended chokes and don't ever use the standard chokes.

    • @chevyon37s
      @chevyon37s Před 3 lety +1

      Frankly not only do manufacturers not include them for cost reasons but because you really just don’t need them to have a functional gun. Although I’m with you and I buy extended tubes whenever I can for my shotguns. You get a hair more velocity out of your ammo and more consistent patterns due to the smother transition for the given constriction of the choke vs a factory tube.

    Great informal video Aaron! Definitely learned more than i thought i had to learn about chokes,, I've always had better luck with full choke duck hunting (basically all I do), more BBs hitting the bird knocking it down a whole lot easier, I also seem to be one of those that takes too far of shots so thats where full helps haha, and seem to be more accurate with a full choke trap shooting, but everyone has their own preferences. A gun threaded for choke tubes must have one installed to shoot. Otherwise you risk big time damage to the barrel. Not so much on modern shotguns, but often the barrel metal is very thin around the choke tube areas. So that’s too thin to remain true without a choke installed, could bulge the barrel, split the end open like a trumpet, or just damage the threads for the choke and fill them with plastic from wads.

    What about a 12 gauge slug ? Can i use a full choke tube or no choke tube at all?

    • @gouldshooting
      @gouldshooting  Před 3 lety +1

      Most manufacturers do not recommend using no choke as damage to the threading could occur. It’s also not recommended to shoot slugs through full chokes because of the small diameter of the choke. Try C, IC, or possibly a M. See which one shoots best. My first shotgun was a BPS and it shot slugs best with an IC. Aaron

      I've shot many slugs through an older single-shot which was "F" from factory. As it didn't damage the barrel, it's not a good idea. It's my guess that the soft lead slugs were swagging down slightly while passing through that "F" constriction. I'm not as dumb as I used to be. hahaha! And it's a good thing I didn't try some big ol' Brenekke hard-cast slugs.

    • @gouldshooting

      Target loads are fine. You get into trouble with hard shot like steel or slugs if you over constrict them. Aaron

    Great video Aaron, you guys always deliver and your vids are so informative. I got to say though coming from the UK.......BB's.....really? They're those 6 mm plastic balls fired through a toy gun. Pellets all day long. Any way mate, keep 'em coming.

      BB guns here in the US shoot steel balls, so referring to the shot as BB’s is not inaccurate.

      Since a slug is a single projectile, and the principles of a choke tube don’t apply you’ll want to use the most open choke you have.

    This video discusses chokes and patterning correctly. What it didn't do (thank goodness) is try to say that the "holes" in the pattern would be misses. It is the shot cloud (3 dimensions) that allows an improved cylinder to break every clay shot at with the proper lead at 40 yards. If the shot all came out and arrived at the point of impacting the clay at the exact instant (impossible, but what a two dimensional "pattern" shows), you'd rarely break even a single clay at 40 yards.

    3:26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

      Never shoot without a choke. But running the most “open” choke like cylinder or improved cylinder that most shotguns come with is best for slugs and buck shot. But with the buckshot you could put in a tighter choke if you wish. Get out and pattern it and see what it does with a given choke constriction.
