- Learning how to confidently make cold process soap was a game changer for me and our homestead. Not only was I able to reduce the cost of our family's expenses by buying organic soap but I also now had a product to sell and also a skill to teach.
Firstly don't be put off by the fear of using caustic soda (also known as lye). Yes it's corrosive and can be dangerous to use but only if you're not following simple safety techniques.
List of equipment (I didn't use all of this in my video but most of it comes in use when you start soapmaking).
2 food thermometers
2 pyrex or heatproof jugs (not metal)
2 spatulas and spoons for stirring
Empty jam jar with lid
Rubber gloves
Face mask
Protective eye goggles
Silicone molds
Stick blender
Ingredients
234g Water
115g Caustic Soda (sodium hydroxide)
900g Extra Virgin Olive Oil*
*Needs to be measured by weight and not measured in milliliters. Also do not try to use 'light' olive oil or substitute with any other oil as this will alter the soap and likely ruin the results.
If this recipe is too big and you don't have a large enough pyrex jug you can halve the recipe.
The reason I add the caustic soda to a jam jar first is so that I never accidentally pour the water into the lye (you must always pour the lye into the water).
When you mix the caustic soda with the water try not to inhale the gases as they are very unpleasant (wearing a face mask is essential).
Cover your benchtops with paper if you are worried about spilling the corrosive lye onto it (mine is a stone benchtop and is quite resistant to damage if I clean up splashes immediately).
The soaps at the start of the video are all variations on this recipe. Some have Himalayan soap in them, others have dried herbs and flowers. Once you're confident in making this recipe you can play around with additives & essential oils to make interesting colours and lovely smells.
Once your soaps have cured for 4 weeks they can be used and stored as you would a store bought soap. They last for years and make great presents for friends and family.
**Safety tips (please read carefully before attempting to make cold process soap)**
This is not safe for children to make, adult supervision is essential.
Never ever touch lye solution with your bare hands, it will burn. If you do get some on your skin, run under cold water for at least 10 minutes.
Seek medical attention immediately if you get any lye solution in your eyes.
Do not leave your lye solution to cool where a child or pet could access it.

For those who want cleaning as well as moisturizer, should put 60% olive oil and 40% coconut oil, coconut oil is your latherer and cleaner, lye is, coz it will change, 132gms and water is 342gms fragrance 29.90 GM's
I need this material balance please
Huh?!?
Thank you Helen. Lye how much?
Thanks for this
@@rebeccahmbithe3024 I always run my recipes through soap calculator making sure it is a 100%
The soap looks lovely. The only comment I have is that you don't need the added expense of extra virgin olive oil. I started making soap 40 years ago, and mostly used pomace olive oil. Since you aren't eating it, (I hope!) you don't have to worry about the taste difference, and there's no difference in the soap quality. There's a slight color difference, but unless you particularly want a bit greener soap, I'd do the switch. Cheers!
I see pomace olive oil in the soap calculator as an option but have never seen it available to buy in Australia!
Where would one find a soap calculator?
@@riverbellcottage try any European grocery store. They usually have it in large 5-10kg tins
@@MericaWakeUpjust search at google. There's some web with detail calc for free
Traces faster too. Good stuff can take forever. I know, I use it. Every time.
This simple video inspired me to try soap making for the first time! I found it super helpful and my first ever batch of soap turned out perfect. Will definitely be experimenting more!!
That's so good to hear! Thanks so much for your lovely comment 😊🙏

That's great to hear!
I want to do this. Thanks for sharing my friend
Omg! Love SOAPS 🎉
Great episode💖
I just made my first batch and then saw this video. I made my olive oil and coconut oil a bit thick. Spooned in okay and had to get a spatula to get an even top. This video helped for my next batch.
I'm so glad it was helpful!
Hi, I am inspired to make my own soap after watching this 😊
Can you add essential oils to fragrance the soap before you pour it into the moulds?
Many thanks
I will try this , it's the most simplest way of making soap I have seen. Thank you
Good luck, it really is very simple! 😊
Now I know lyn is sodium hydroxide which is called caustic soda, thank you for get information now I can make soap and all credits goes to you
My cousin's wife had this hobby. It's very expensive hobby tough. At least in india. She also made it using 3 ingredients and it was natural soap.
Am i the only one concerned that there's literally written POISON on the caustic soda 😅
It gets neutralized through the process of saponification.
It's got a lid on it though
Wonderful! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
Wonderful, ethical and vegan.
Very lovely video
Impressive video thanks for sharing your skill
Thanks!
Thanks I will try one day
Nice large bars!! ❤
So Great, thanks alot for the training
Glad you enjoyed it!
Köszönöm szépen!
It is good to know how these things are made we use them everyday but hey I have learned something thanks
You’re welcome ☺️
Good work done
Looks amazing
Thank you!
I have worch one hundred videos of make soap and I never understand 😊😊but fainaly I do understand from your video 😅😅
Thank you 😌💖
lOVE THAT IT IS ONLY 3 INGREDIENTS ARE YOU ABLE TO ADD ESSENTIAL OILS AND COLOURANTS TO THIS MIX I HAVE NEVER MADE SOAP BEFORE BUT THIS RECIPE LOOKS EASY TO MAKE THANKS FOR SHARING YOUR KNOWLEDGE
Awesome
Make sure that you use Nitrile gloves and not rubber(latex) or vinyl.
Super important!
Can you explain why? Thanks
A reaction between the sodium hydroxide and latex. And vinyl is a polymer aka plastic, or synthetic material, that will shrink if heated. I guess it's okay to use heavy rubber gloves like the ones used to wash dishes, but thin latex can have microscopic holes in them that can lead to chemical burns. Same as a condom is 99.9% guaranteed. Not to mention latex is an has allergenic properties.
This looks so simple! Thanks for sharing! Can I ask, could I use 800g of olive oil and 100g of coconut oil? To add some suds? Also 20g of fragrance?
Nice video! I subscribed. Love from South Africa.
Thank you!! 🥰
Very nice
Thanks 👍😁
Thank You!!!
I'm sorry I can't see clearly the names of your ingredients as you seem to be very fast and to tell the truth I'm so impressed ❤and would like to know more ❤❤❤.
This really helpful thanks

How much Lye do you add?Is the curing process to make the lye safe? Thanks
Thank you for sharing, I am making soap today for the first time copying this video but shouldn't the measurements be ML instead Grams as it's liquid? Please someone help.
Riverbend cottage did you use distilled water or tap water
Hello what did you use to make the coloured soap
Love your videos. I've been making olive oil and coconut oil soap which is great but I wanted a soap that would be harder, longer lasting and a bit cheaper. I read lard can do that, this time I used olive oil, sunflower oil and lard. I used the heat of the lye solution to help melt the lard, mixed it all up, separated and added colours and scent, then poured in the mould, I noticed it had just started to set but just got away with it when I was pouring. it was semi hard after 20mins but I've no idea why, was it the lard or could I have accidentally made hot process soap ISH?
Hello can i add other ingredients like lemon or papaya?
Please how did the liquid turn into a solid soap.....how did you do it ?? Please I need an answer from anyone please😢
Pls in the absence of the mould what else can I use
Do you require a mask? Any harmful gases?
Thanks for the video. Will definitely do!
Does it make the shower moldy because it's organic?
Thank you loved the simple and informative video! Question: what type of soap is this best for would you say? Hand soap? Body soap? Or both?🧼🧼🤔💕
This Castile soap is perfect for the whole body!! ☺️
Nice
great video thank you nice to have music instead of talking
@riverbellcottage Nice job! I think I will try this for Solid Soap 72% Olive Oil = 227g distilled water - 123g NAOH 98% - 900g Olive Oil (SAP 192.5 / 1402.5 = 0.13725g NAOH for each 1g olive oil). I will come back with the results.
Jesse!! we need to make soap
If you want bathing soap you should use caustic potash.
Can we use infused oil with herbs of choice and make herbal soap? The herbal infused oil will not react with lye?
Lye is the mixture of water and caustic soda?
Can we replace caustic soda to Alka-mag the safest option or it has to be sodium hydroxide?
Would like to make sure before jumping in making it.
At what point would you add oils if you wanted- like I have some five guard I use for cleaning and I'd love for it to be a antibacterial hand soap because it smell bomb! - it was our " covid killer go to and it has been amazing for keeping all kinda colds outta our home- making some soaps for friends seems like the obvious go to
Gift.
Great idea, add after oils and lye are combined (at trace). I’d recommend about 10g of essential oil for this recipe.
2:43 I actually made this recipe and it came out beautifully, wish I could share the pics
Post it on some picture sharing site and respond here, Im curious
Do they make the shower moldy?
Foolish question. But this soap is any use soap? Like it could be body wash or hand wash? Also if adding scents and or other ingredients do you cut back on any of the oil or soda?
how do you add scents to it?
I am here cause of fight club thank for the tuto
Can I make this with Baking soda ?
V good
I have a question, can we add (for example) lemon extract while the soap is still in the mixing process?
Yes, you can add lemon essential oil before you pour it into your moulds. Just give it a good stir and use at least 10g/kg so that the smell survives the saponification and curing process!
Hi such an amazing video. I want to ask, how long can I keep this soap?
Thanks! It will be safe to use forever but may smell rancid after a year.
How long does it take to expire?
Must experiment, got no moulds NEVER seen them in my COUNTRY BUH will improvise.😂😅 , thanks
If I want to substitute less olive oil for some coconut oil does that affect the lye solution
Hope you got an answer on your own or elsewhere; I'm just now seeing your question. Yes, substituting oils/fats absolutely changes the chemistry as each oil/fat has a slightly different amount of lye that is necessary to convert it to soap. If you don't use enough lye, then you end up with an oily goo; if you use too much, then you end up with a bar that has lye leftover that will burn your skin. Cold process soap making is straightforward, but it is still chemistry. Best to stick to established recipes until you understand the process/chemistry well enough to begin blending/substituting oils/fats. Just one man's opinion...
Hello!
Is it ok if we just mix it normally and not use a blender?
And can we use normal glass thermometers?
You can but it will take a lot longer for it to come to trace. That’s how they did it in the old days 😊
When do I add color to the mixture? Thank you
Add your colour after you've blended the oils and lye, just before you pour it into your mould.
Nice video.can we use this soap for face use?
Yes absolutely, it's very mild and great for the face.
thanks for sharing! Will definitely try this because I need an unscented soap. What did you mean by "leave 4 weeks to cure". We can't use it after 48 hours? Or do we have to wait another month before we can
It’s safe to use after 48 hours but it will be very soft and will go soggy quickly in the shower. The cure time is so the soap can develop and harden as excess water evaporates. This soap is better the longer it cures. But if you can’t wait it is perfectly safe to use after 48 hours ☺️
thank you!!

Hi! I've tried to get into soap making and this video definitely seems like it'd be really helpful! But I don't fully understand the numbers... Is soap making like working with resin or baking a cake? Do you need exact measurements for the lye to activate properly? And secondly, does this soap disinfect? Is that what the lye is for?
I'm sorry for all the questions, I just hope to understand! Love the video! ❤
Hi @spookyghost4304 - the lye is what turns the oil into soap, through a chemical reaction between the lye and the fatty acids in the oil. The quantity of lye is calculated based on the quantity and type of oils and fats used, so yes, the measurements need to be followed closely. There shouldn't be any lye remaining in the finished soap - it should all have reacted with the fatty acids in the oil to turn them into soap. So no, the soap doesn't disinfect - it just cleans. Soap made with just olive oil like this is called Castile soap, and is very gentle on the skin.
I found the soap making tutorial for beginners by Elly's Everyday Soap Making really, really helpful and informative, and very easy to understand. I highly recommend it as a great starting point:

To add scent do we add essential oils? How much should I add for this recipe?
If you are using essential oils I would add about 10-15g for this recipe. Just stir it through before you pour it into your moulds.
What if one want to put color
Amei
Just wondering if we can use this in face plz?
Yes, it's a beautiful, mild soap for the face.
Hi can we add magnesium oil into this soap? And do you just wash all the containers etc that has had contact with lye in just soapy water? And is this just refined coconut oil?
I don't know what magnesium oil you mean. Any additional oil would make the soap softer as it would increase the superfat, however magnesium is a salt and so would likely make the bar harder.
No, this is olive oil and make sure you wash everything well. Better to have a separate set of utensils and equipment for soapmaking to be safe!
