Well if you think about it, especially if he's spirit- it makes sense. Cole is a spirit of compassion and he wants to help people. As a spirit he probably can tell what Solas is feeling even more than Solas can, or want's to. So for all we know it's a weird foreshadowing to how much Solas WANTS to be stopped and saved and Cole's like "DUH THIS is what we need to be doing!"

@@ahmettosun8196 I know JRR Tolkien created an entire elven language called Quenya to write the lore for most of his books. When he wrote The Silmarillion, alot of the Quenya language was used. I think a lot of fantasy use Quenya, or at least take inspiration from it. I'll have to look into it more, but my hypothesis is that the elven language used in the Dragon Age series AT LEAST takes inspiration from Quenya.
The only thing sadder than this romance is the wait for the next game...

I was playing Dragon Age 2 the other day and had Merrill in my party and in combat, whenever she would say "may the dread wolf take you" the biggest chill would go down my spine
Marethari Talas also always says 'may the dread wolf not hear your steps' and i'm like 'gurl he WAS (T.T) my boyfriend'
I wish Merrill was in this game so we could see her reaction to knowing the true past of the Dalish and their gods.

Almost every line he says here is precious, and I love this one in particular: "I lay in dark and dreaming sleep while countless wars and ages passed."
It's iambic for crying out loud! And it sounds sooooooo good when he says it in his low and tender voice.

Solas frequently slips into iambic meter and I'm pretty certain that subconsciously, this was the reason I fell for him so quickly.
I don't know what iambic means and i'm definitely going to research that but I replayed that line at least 3 times because of how much i loved how he said it. The voice acting in Dragon Age continues to amaze me!
Edit: I googled it and oh my god. I've fallen even deeper for this character.

I completely agree with you, im in love with Iron bull his romance is just so funny!! But solas and levellan are so beautiful and complicated and every scene with him is painful and so sad, I can't wait to see where bioware take his character and I can only dream, hope and wish that they finally get there happy ending sometime in the future!

The more I think about it (and I can't stop), the worst it becomes :( In my first comment I said that maybe I like Solavellan more than for my Cullen/Trev. Well... there's no "maybe" there anymore.
I was a Cullenmancer before, and Solas was my second favorite. In base game I could easily get my heart shattered into a million pieces by him and then reload to my Cullenmance Inquisitor, and feel happy again. And when I started this DLC, I had this fluffy, heartwarming romance going all perfect, with a wedding and a dog and settling down, and I loved it, it felt a little "too easy", but great nonetheless. And then I did a Solavellan run.. and this scene ruined everything for me. I can't go back to Cullen anymore, it feels like there's something missing.
Solas romance was always unique, every scene with him is so carefully constructed, you can see that he's fighting it, that he tries to stay in control, and then he just snaps and grabs your butt and eats your face (lol, sorry :), but no other scene, not even the waterfall one, is as powerful as this one. It is CRUSHING, it hurts so, so bad, you can see that he loves you more than anything, but his guilt and desire to right his wrongs and to save his people pushes him away. It is pure, delicious suffering and I just can't go back anymore. I am doomed to be trapped in sadness.

My main Inquisitor was an Trevelyan that romanced Cassandra, mostly because my preference is to play as human in my canon runs of the game, but this romance just blasts all others away into oblivion. Now I just go back and look at the other romances and feel it's just all inferior. Solas was so perfectly written, that it feels almost wrong not to play an character that doesn't romance him. I might as well have my Lavellan be the character that follows up from my canon Cousland and Hawke. I'm a sucker for story heavy content, and there is no romance in Inquisition that is more story heavy then Solas.

I remember Bull saying the Qun picks the leaders who can make the hard decisions... and live with the consequences. That is the problem with Solas. He made a huge decision that changed the very laws of nature to the world wanting to make it better. But with those changes came with major consequences, And he can't live with them so he's trying to undo what he believes is a mistake. But ultimately I think he wants perfection which probably doesn't exist.
Perfection? I think what he ultimately wants is to silence his guilt.

Or, and this may just be wild speculation, the veil IS a mistake?
Name one good thing that came from his destruction of the natural world? Death to the most hyperadvanced powerful race with near uninmaginable magical tech and teleportation inter dimensional construction?
Or how about the effective loss of nature. Do we even know how the veil affects the planet? Life? Nature? Since the Fade was a natural state of the world its most likely destroyed something in the balance of nature.
You know what happens when nature is fucked? Everything eventually dies. The only reason everything hasnt yet is because even the veil Solas created doesnt stop ALL the fade energy/world and is like a slow drip of water just barely watering the planet keeping it alive, but for how long? How sustainable is life and nature without the fade fully breathing life into the world? How long before the humans or the blight eventually kill every living thing?
Remember Solas’ gravestone in the Fade? His worst fear is “dying alone”
I’m betting in DA4 the inquisitor and him will die together as some sort of bittersweet ending.
I hope so....
For those that want to save Solas yes, but hopefully not for those who choose to kill him.

Gotta say the voice acting here was amazballs but especially solas's his voice is a lot deeper and sadder you can hear regret in his voice and the pain as he forces himself away from lavellan and pushes himself towards the goal he doesn't really want to achieve but feels like he must. I sympathize with him but good God if he thinks we're just gonna watch him burn the word ! Team cousland, hawke and lavellan are a go !

He’s going to do it because he wants Th elven world back, but being with the inquisition, and especially the inquisitor, has shown him that even though he wants the old ways back, he still sees value in this world.
I feel like this romance is going to be a major driving force of swaying solas away from his plans

I sure hope it's the Inqusitior that eventually deals with Solas and not the new character in Dragon Age 4 ( since I'm assuming there most likely will be a new character). Doesn't make sense for this new guy to come in and stop him when our Inquisitor has so much connection with him. Especially if you romanced him.

Maybe The inquisitor for small portions where you're only having dialogue choices (cause they're missing an arm) and this other new character for the bulk of the game doing the leg work. +Shaftell I just assumed with the way they ended it, that they are doing a mass effect style "import your inquisitor" type of thing where you continue where you left off (plus a bit of a time skip I'm sure.) I'd honestly prefer that because there is still so much left unresolved. I agree, it doesn't make as much sense, nor would it be as satisfying if it was just some random who stepped up to stop him.
It will be hard to play as the same character with the same weapons. Really only a mage or possibly a crossbow would work. They'd have to come up with new fighting styles. I guess a hook to attach to a shield and a blade to replace your hand. Two handed weapon is differently out

One of the only games where you can unknowingly romance the antagonist, and it's genuine. There's no manipulation or abuse, Solas genuinely loves her.

And this is why I love Dragon Age. You know that even though the Inquisitor has been forced to retire, you can tell that her story, and the bond forged between herself and Solas hasn't yet finished. There's room for new heroes, but also the obvious return of old ones, in cameos that truly are legendary. Can't wait for the Hero of Ferelden to show up an kick some ass. NO WAY she's letting some crazy-ass elven god fuck up the world after the Blight.

This is how I view Cullen vs Solas romance lines:
- Cullen is like that perfect person you dream of finding. You cheer for the protagonist as she comes to love this man that challenges her, believes in her, and fights for her. Yet it's . . . too perfect. There needs to be more drama to the story. It's the kind of romance that you want to end in tragedy that makes you cry your heart out onto the pages of a good novel.
- Solas . . . Now that's a relationship that calls for multiple sequels, a redemption arc, and a movie adaptation. It's brilliant in it's complexity. The natural feeling of dissatisfaction at the end leaves you wanting more and clamoring for the next installment.
I love both romance lines for their own merits. Give me more!!!!
The Cullen romance would have more flesh to it, if there was actual personality conflicts between him and the protagonist. The sappy romance will always ultimately come off as unearned or cheap, so long as it remains a simplistic "don't choose the obviously and needlessly insulting dialogue option". They actually could have created interesting conflicts for the character, with regards to his views on Templars and Mages, which would connect the romance subplot directly to the main storyline.
I agree. Cullen immediately falls in love with the Inquisitor and the romance felt too rushed and perfect. Trevelyan family is religious and the Inquisitor was almost forced to serve the Chantry, I expected a conflict based on this aspect.

Cullen is a drug addict with a horrible past who redeems himself with help and Solas is a genocidal lying manipulator who's also an elven "god".
I know that Bioware always approves of diversity and representation in their games, but I honestly think that the Elven female is the canon Inquisitor. Her role as an elven savior of Thedas (following in the steps of Shartan, Warden Lyna Mahariel, and defying the history of the Exalted March), succeeding Inquisitor Ameridan as an elf and a warrior/mage, and the deep bond she forges with Solas and his cause--knowing that to save what she loves, she has to destroy whom she loves; Elvhenan and Fen'Harel. Seriously. This can't get any more perfect for canon.

Elvrn Mage it just feels right. It spits in the face of everyone's beliefs, rising up from discrimination from all sides of the spectrum, learning the deepest part of Elven history forgotten by her own kind. Proving that Mages can be trusted, Elves aren't just slaves or lower beings. Even falling in love with Solas feels canon to me. Lile their is no better narrative than this to me.
Tuckinator inator Completely agree with this. Despite the heartbreak, I had to go through with it all because it felt SO right. More than any other parts like that in the games, tbh. Most I can see either or, but with the heavy elven lore and focus in Inquisition and the DLC end with a romance, it feels incredibly canon and has a lot more potential and implications for future plot. While I would hope there could be an option to play the Inquisitor (although if they keep the style of the games, it seems unlikely, sadly) or at least see her in a future game(s) and play a big role like other characters, it would just be perfect. I guess Tevinter would be the best bet against Solas, since he doesn't know much about them, and they have the magic and the history of "dealing" with the elves. Also now, since Dorian is becoming a powerhouse in Tevinter, i smell an alliance could be totally possible. And perhaps they are the people that "he doesn't know about" hinted to by the Inquisitor.
+Anas Chibani An alliance with Tevinter would make me VERY curious. Tevinter is talked about so much, I really hope we are going there for the next game! I doubt we will have the same protagonist, but I really hope we will see many old characters come into play! And I do hope the finale is getting closer. I don't want Dragon Age to be a 10+ games series.
+Anas Chibani Much of Tevinter's magic and advances are actually based on ancient elven technology and knowledge. As a result, Solas probably knows a great deal about the Imperium.

I always did find the possible interactions between dorian and fenris to be interesting, would definitely like to see them "working" together in some shape or form. but dorian is going to be an obvious cameo or mentor if not party member.

He takes no pleasure it destroying this world, but it is a consequence of restoring the elven world which is a sacrifice he must make. I have no trouble in understanding why he would do so.

There was a going romance scene that would have taken place at the lake where Solas broke up with us. That scrapped romance scene was given to another BioWare character; Jaal in Mass Effect Andromeda where he would take Ryder to a lake

I don't know. I think romancing Solas makes more sense than romancing cullen as a female elf, even though it's evidently heartbreaking. I mean it gives it more depth for Solas to have conflicts within him whether to save his world which will destroy her or not destroying her world and forgetting his own people altogether(although he is extremely decided on this one). Both options seems quite selfish. He can't have both. He can't have his love and his world at the same time. He even says at the waterfall scene "maybe in another world", signifying that he wish he has met her on his world. He cuts off his attachment with Lavellan because he is guilty of making himself attached to her world. Also, there is more chances of stopping a person when that person is someone you love.
Maker, I can't stop myself from thinking about this after finishing my playthrough which was a day ago. Also not to mention the tears in my eyes whilst listening to the lost elf theme. *sigh* all my Solas feels laid to bare

The line "Solas, Var lath vir suledin" is the best and most favorite line in every dragon age series to date. It was that moment solas became my most favorite romancable character in any video game. He is the only character in a video game who targeted every place in my heart. although i romanced sera my first playthrough... At first I didn't trust him... like at all. All to soon I hated him, he irradiated me on every level possible. Then I was curious, he was so wise and he seemed to care for spirits and mages like i did. I couldnt tell if he cared much for elves or not because half the time he would either dis them or defend them. I slowly grew to respect him but that was it for awhile. Then I grew to trust him to have my back, I realized he never did fail to defend me and he was incredibly powerful, s I helped him and sided with him several times. Then I grew to love his character. When the game ended in the "final" scene I was beyond shocked, at the time I was unaware I cared for solas' character, it just struck me right then because I was crying and then felt enraged. Betrayed. Every emotion I ever felt swirled inside me... then I watched the playthrough of the tresspasser dlc (I own an xbox 360... so sadness) and I wanted to hate him but I couldnt, when the inquisitor said that line I was like "..........yup I'm done.... best romance ever, fuck it im out"
How to have a great experience with Dragon Age romances:
1. Romance with Solas
2. Romance with Anders
3. Romance with Alistair (play as elf or dwarf and not becoming a queen)
But all of those end terribly. D:

Coming back here after watching the gameplay reveal of The Veilguard, Solas says "I've taken precautions to minimize damage", as a Solamancer, we can read it as him wanting to spare Lavellan and it's destroying me.

They way Gareth David-Lloyd says the line sounds as if it were poetry. The writing itself is a masterpiece and after all these years. It still sticks with me.
Coupled with the following line "I woke still weak a year before I joined you.", does it remind you of a certain song?
If I knew how to animate on a professional level and had access to the files for this scene....
I would change the animation near the end from around 12:41 - your Lavellan's face is in utmost pain and starting to lose consciousness.
as you start to collapse on the ground, Solas grabs you gently - "My love..."
while starting to give you the final kiss, his right arm gently holds your anchor hand, and a flash of light starts to emanate from his right hand until the screen fades to white (transition)
when the white fades away, your inquisitor is unconsious, but you as the player sees her anchor hand about halfway to fully disintegrating. Solas looks back one last time, says "I will never forget you." then leaves.
I swear if Bioware had more time and effort into this scene to make it like this, it would have had a wayyyy more powerful emotional impact.

I like that you showed some apprehension after he said he'd let this world die, because a lot of people decided to choose the "I agree with you." I was interested in seeing what he'd say if you didn't. Destroying an entire world and most likely everyone in it to bring back the good ol' days doesn't sound like a great idea, especially when this world has started to fix itself. It could be so good in its own way. Give it a chance, Solas, c'mon.
The music when seeing Solas again just brings me to tears and sends chills down my spine. The musical note for this was absolutely perfect for this final interaction to end the game. Props to the music crew big time. I will see you again vhenan, and I will save you.
That last scene... I hope the next game will show the Tevinter capital city of Minrathous in as much detail as possible with huge options for exploration.
Having played through this and had time to absorb everything, I'm left with three main thoughts. 1) Solas is my favourite villain/tragic hero in any form of fiction ever. I have such complicated twisting feelings of love, friendship, betrayal add horror about him. It's everything Anders should have been. 2) The Inquisition was a masterstroke from a story perspective about how to introduce a new PC to this incredibly complex and textured world, and I loved every second of this game 3) I am frothing at the mouth at the thought of Tevinter finally appearing in the series, maybe even taking control of a magister! I am so excited I can't even. I can only hope when the next game finally comes, The Lama Who Delivers will be there with us again...
I make a stark bet as in whether Solas will be the main antagonist or just a glimpse on what's really inbound. Everybody that watches this ending focus so hard on the phlegmatic yet fiery emotional aspect of the romance/friendship between the Inquisitor and Solas that seems to forget all about the destructive potential behind other Dragon Age titles or DLCs. The Evanuris are pratically the first concrete possibility. Add the imminence of another Blight and Archdemon arrival to that by any of the remaining Old Gods; Razikale, Lusacan or even the reputed Eighth Old God depicted in the constellation "Draconis" and stricken from historical records. Also the awakening of the Titan in The Descent DLC (since there's a wall carving you find underground during the walkthrough of the Trespasser DLC which demonstrates the Evanuris enslaving the first Titan[s]), the existence of powerful others Avvar Spirit-Gods and even the return of the original Magisters or some equally terrifying and potent Blight being. Of course, all of this excluding the war between Tevinters and Qunari.
As you see, there's no point in Solas being the only and main concern of the next game as all DA games fully explore the path galore to bloody, complex and captivating plots. My guess? That at least a Blight and the Elvanuris will follow up in this next title along with Solas plan and the Tevinter-Qunari War. It's going to be massive!

Yeah, terrible things will happen once he strikes down the veil. Its already been hinted.
Not only wishing, but hoping! Such as in a portion of the gameplay, probably in the late climax, in which the protagonist might actually have a chance do redeem or bring down Solas by helping him fight against the Elvanuris after he realizes the foolishness of his plan or kill him after he/she/they is/are done dealing with them, respectively. See the prime potential? Add an imminent Blight, the arising of another powerful blighted being (like Corypheus) or the appearance of the Titan and, of course, the Tevinter-Qunari War. Among inumerous new possibilities, all of this could even be simultaneously! Bioware has everything to make this next Dragon Age a fantastic next installment of the series. ;)
Levynus Do you think the orbs of the evanuris was once from the titan? And why were there a lot of those from the back of the Vir Dirthara. Oooh I was thinking of that as well. They can't end DA without wrapping up all the story. HOF is in Weisshaupt. I really think they'll end the story in Anderfels or maybe hrm somewhere else we don't know?

The orb must be a tremendous source of raw power, it could even be derived from the power of the Old Gods (uncorrupted) aswell, since Corypheus was able to use it somehow after unlocking it. Indeed, I really wish to see the HOF redeemed and successful in his endeavors to cure The Calling and likewise Hawke (case of which he survives that fade part in DAI) helping the Grey Wardens against a most certain fatal Blight or chaos in the Anderfels that is to come. As for Elgar'nan... let's say I expect the Sun to bright less on that day, as the Wolf and the Dragon shall eclipse it. Haha ;)
Levynus We will probably see Hawke when the veil is removed by Solas ...maybe. It'll be fun if we can customize our previous characters even the HOF lol. HOF is running out of time, how many years does HOF have left? They really need to find a cure. I feel awful that I exiled the Wardens from Orlais but I do know they will rebuild. DA1 for example was focused on rebuilding the Wardens. (: So I don't think the exiling decision matters.

+Ivory Inkwell I think it's nice they kept it vague. Not everyone likes sexual intimacy. Other routes are forced to have intimate scenes.
Iron Bull in particular has some...very interesting implications on what he and the Inquisitor have potentially done together. Like, that "chandelier" thing he mentions makes me both curious as to how the two accomplished "intimacy" on a chandelier of all things, but also makes me scared of the answer.
I'm disappointed as well. His romance moments, although they end in tragedy, are by far the most passionate of them all. I would have loved to see him make love to his female companion. They don't need full nudity to accomplish that.
I always liked the uniqueness of the lack of sex scenes in the Solas romance. It made you feel so much love for the guy and so much heartbreak at the end, without those scenes. Makes me feel like it was the best written romance for that reason. You get so much less, yet feel so much more.
Well at least the whole romance was very passionate and he had a legit reason. I can’t understand how anyone would choose Sebastian in DA2. That one really got on me nerves

Cole on the other hand seems to not care for the conclusion but her feelings. He as a compassion spirit understands the love Lavellan still carries for Solas. At this rate Cole sees that Lavellan loves Solas unconditionally and will not stop until she can be with him. Hence the approval of the decision to "rescue" him (because also Sola's is his friend).

Well, to be fair, he HAD been helping fight the Qunari for the entirety of the DLC. Otherwise, Thedas would have been thrown in chaos due to them invading successfully. The PROBLEM is Lavellan saying "That's why Solas left".

The Grey Warden He had a reason, no one denied that. However it's not a reason to beat people with the subject to death, or assumes everything is somehow related to it, for example the little chat between anders and carver, anders say does carver hate him just because he's a mage and carver replies that he only hates anders because he doesn't shut up about it.
When I first played DAI, I had no intention of romancing Solas (I was gonna go for Sera) but then after talking with him a few times I couldn't help but find the lil egghead charming and interesting, like there was more to him. His romance overall was heartbreaking, but interesting in my opinion. You can tell he's hurting as well. The way he speaks, hell, even the animation in his last scene gave him the look of a kicked puppy. We learn that Solas isn't doing this out of joy, but of duty and guilt and that kind of stopped me from hating him altogether. He still loves the Inquisitor but he knows that he must destroy the world for the "good" of his people. He's sad. He's conflicted.
I think people hate Solas and talk about his romance disappointedly mainly because they think he's a monster that tricked and betrayed you out of amusement. He does trick you but again, he'a not happy about it. He still loves the Inquisitor.
Love isn't easy and I love how complicated their relationship is. It's great storytelling really. I just hope somehow they could resolve the matter and maybe disappear to somewhere safe forever? Where no one could hunt them down.

I know if you join the Friends of Red Jenny it's shown that the Inquisitor has a hook attached to the elbow, but it'd be fun to switch it up between other weapons, and if the Inquisitor is a Mage, magic could be infused with the various attachments.

The first time I completed the game, I had Solas in my party to take down Corypheus. As such, I equipped him with some of the best gear I had, so when he left immediately after the orb had been destroyed, I was pissed that he stole some of my best equipment. After finishing Trespasser, I was even more pissed. The fucker not only stole my gear, he stole my hand!
Solas still has my highest level staff
Theory : The black city is the prison of the evanuris and they created the blight as part of a plan to free themselves.
And in the end, the Inquisitor was disarmed.

Misc observation- Solas does the eye glowing thing before feeling up romanced Inky versus no eye glow hand touch in platonic versions. Simply an effect of healing with a kiss instead of hand touch, camera angles not showing eye glow during platonic scenes or something else going on?

It's different, not only because he doesn't really want to destroy the world, but we (at least I) don't want to kill him. Bioware did a great job with this character.
This may be completely farfetched, but I'm wondering if the Evanuris might be connected to the Taint. Corypheus claimed on several occasions that the Black City was already blackened and that The Maker's throne was empty when he and the other magisters entered it.
In the DLC, Solas explains that the Evanuris were so corrupted by their lust for power that they killed Mythal, one of their own, simply because she didn't share their desires. He also sealed them away because an eternity of torment was the most fitting punishment for their crime.
That being said, could the Golden City be the place where Mythal was murdered? and her murder is what turned it black?"

Yeah it would. But there were some pretty massive revelations in Inquisition like Corypheus claiming that the Golden City was already blackened when the Magisters entered, Solas causing the aging of the Elves when he created the Veil, etc.

I can just imagine in Dragon Age 4 , Solas causing Lavellan's death somehow as she and her band of friends are trying relentlessly to save him. Would absolutely destroy him.

It's been nine years since this sad farewell scene. And the nine-year wait has been shattered and betrayed by a trailer video from a few hours ago. I'm hoping the follow-up trailer, which will be released on the 11th, will be normal.
Wow. This game grew on me tremendously since launch. I remember almost quitting for good after getting lost in Hinterlands limbo. Then they introduce a fantastic villain in what may at first seem to some a head-scratching narrative choice (hobo magic elf buddy turns out to be the infamous trickster god responsible for many of the issues plaguing Thedas and now he wants to destroy the world despite his romance and friendship with the main character?) but unravels into an unforgettable and exciting step towards this series’ conclusion, and now I can’t wait for the 4th game and I haven’t even played this dlc. TL;DR Thought this game was a 6 but issa 9 in my mind now
this is the most amazing endings i've ever seen in video games , one of ur close friends becomes your enemy , eve if we play someone that solas don't know in DAI 4 i will always hesitate if they tell me to fight solas
yukki hsn They need to make the Inquisitor just like the Commander. Give him/her the spotlight for DA4!
This breaks my heart every time I go through the scene. For some reason I am hoping for a different outcome where Solas and my Inquisitor gets to live the rest of their lives together....
