Today I post the main mission of my second trip to China:
A once secret military underground train workshop.
In the late 1960s, a nationwide war preparation effort against the Soviet Union was launched. A proposal was made to construct a combat ready locomotive repair factory to safeguard against enemy bombings and ensure maximum safety. That's why it got constructed inside the heart of a mountain. Construction was completed in 1972, and officially opened a year later with the capacity of 50 locomotives. annual overhaul capacity of 50 locomotives Initially the factory opened as a confidential unit with its activities under semi-military management. There was a dedicated military unit within the factory responsible for patrolling and protecting the facility. In the 1980s the factory was declassified and began providing maintanance services for train locomotives. Over the course of 35 years, it repaired over 1500 locomotives before abruptly ceasing operations in 2008 due the restriction of locomotives on certain tracks. Since then, this underground workshop has been frozen in time.

Machine at 21:11 is a metal Shaper (one shown a little earlier also). Uses a tool very similar to a lathe but rather than the work piece turning like on a lathe, the work is held in a vise or clamped to the table of the machine. The head of the machine pushes across the work piece and planes off material on each. Kind of like a milling machine but no rotating cutting tool. Just a tool that pushes across the work piece to remove metal by force. There were also some milling machines in that machine shop. Looked like they could have been tape read type (kind of early cnc machines). Edit: better example at 21:47 of a shaper. The piece with lamp ontop of it would be the moving part that rams forward to take each cut. Can also see the vise that held work piece here. Machine at 24:00 is a vertical turning center, basically a lathe but standing straight up in the air. Modern machine shops still employ all of this equipment aside from shapers. Modern milling machines have replaced pretty much all need for shapers.

Watching this gives me a very sad feeling. Even though I grew up in China, I was from coastal area where railroads had been electrified when I was born, and therefore I had never seen an operating steam locomotive running. My grandfather was also an engineer working on railroads. Also it is good to mention that residents of Northeastern area of China, also known as Manchuria, have a very different perspective of China's rapid economic growth since the 1980s. Before the 1980s, the state had heavily invested in the heavy industries in that area, but afterwards, as China moved toward market economy, the Northeastern part suffered declined and many factories were out of business and many skillful workers were unemployed.

This was called "Factory 701", near Napiao. I went through here when it was still operating in January 2007, with the two through track tunnels and side tunnels connecting them. Presumably that is JS 8162 still in there, it was in steam when we visited, and several big QJs were about outside. This is where the three QJs were overhauled before being shipped to the USA (for RJ Corman and Iowa Interstate). Amazing to see how it looks today.

Absolutely amazing fine. Can you imagine the noise, fumes. Working down there must have been awful. Nevermind that there's no escape routes in case or fire.
Some of those machines are just incredible.
So sad that steam train hasn't been preserved. It should be on display somewhere

It really is crazy to think of all the effort, labor, planning, materials, etc... that has gone into so many structures that have been abolandoned or destroyed or are no longer in use... to think of all the waste... if how much more efficient we could he, of what we could accomplish if we could use everything to its full potential. I am probably not conveying what I am thinking fully... or accurately.
