Notre Dame cathedral so fragile it might not be saved, rector says

One of my friends sent me an email concerning the security on the roof of Notre-Dame. She has a diploma in Art History and studied in the “Ecole du Louvre” (“Louvre School”, where students learn art history and restoration processes): “I visited the framing of Notre Dame with architects of the “Bâtiments de France” (“Buildings of France”, the highest rank for an architect in France), some years ago. This 13th century timber frame was extremely protected. Each intervention is always accompanied by historians, architects, experts; no work is envisaged without extreme caution; no source of heat, no torch, no electrical apparatus is allowed; a high-performance alarm system is in place; and very strict supervision of all people allowed there. If they don’t save it it’s only because they don’t want to. There is money for everything out there.
Not technically true. If the foundation and infrastructure is destroyed whole buildings a right off, everything else is built off that, so if you gotta tear it out and rebuild it at that point you might as well call it notre dame two, cuz your basically building a new building out of the old one.
Duh Harro i think thats easier than building a heavy spire on top of a burnt building built in the 10th century
Notre dame is a huge tourist attraction, and draws in unbelievable amounts of money. I'm sure they would do whatever they could to get that back.
That's not how structural engineering works. Or fire. Burn something and that's that. It's gone. Money can't make ashes turn back into wood.
You do realize it's a centuries old building that caught fire right?
Very saddening news. Any historical landmark is intriguing and important to learn from.
Definitely!
See those flying buttresses along the outside of the cathedral? They aren't there for "looks". They actually help hold the building together. Weight and stress is a large part of why the ceiling was made of wood and not stone. No one should be worshiping or doing anything else in there until it's repaired. The vibrations themselves may be too much for the damaged structure to bear. ignoringfriction.blogspot.com/2008/12/flying-buttresses.html
In 1971 I had the pleasure of visiting Notre Dame. It has/had the most powerful, beautiful pipe organ which was being played by a person who was auditioning for the position of First Organist. You can easily fit 5 small mosques on there. The current population/newcomers would be ecstatic
Are you a structural engineer involved in the project?
If Notre Dame has a 50% survival rate, I wonder what Reims Cathedral had back in WW1 when the roof caught fire and collapsed because of german artillery bombardment that left the structure a broken shell. They managed to save Reims almost completely as of currently, if they can’t save Notre Dame de Paris, then they’re doing something wrong.
The Frauenkirche (dedicated to St Mary like Notre Dame) in Dresden was reduced to a footprint, after the communists were kicked out they rebuilt it, even using many of the original bricks. It isn't a case of whether it can be saved but whether the political will exists to do so. The same can be said for Coventry Cathedral bombed in WWII. It could have been rebuilt but they chose not to, instead they replaced it with a hideous modern building.
I just hope they don't massacre an entire forest of oak to rebuild it, I'm sure there is a modern solution to make it look old with pine while keeping the structural integrity.
Catubrannos , i don’t think they should use wood, both Cologne and Reims cathedrals use iron/steel arched frames which greatly improve the life of the roof and ensure that it can’t catch fire. It would also be the faster option concerning rebuilding time and from the exterior, nothing would look different
I do not care how long it takes. They should restore it to the way it was. Carefully.
I lived in France for a while, but never went inside the cathedral until the weekend before the fire. I am so thankful I decided to go on a whim.

If keeping the cathedral standing up means not rebuilding the roof, then be it. I'd rather have a roofless Notre Dame than it being completely destroyed from a collapse.
Also, talking about roofless cathedrals, I visited a roofless abbey, the abbey of San Galgano. Constructions began in 1218, but after the black plague, the abbey started to decay, as the monks either died or went away. By the 1700s it was almost abandoned, the ceilings were collapsing, and it lost most of its roof to a fire, the watch tower also collapsed. At one point, it was used as a foundry. Luckily, by late 1800s, people started to restore the abbey.

Lucas Daniel who said it had to be inside? Religion is not tied to buildings, it's in the spirit of those who believe. Could've had it outside / another location
Sadly, the only reason most people ever set foot in this Cathedral is to sightsee and for Christmas and Easter mass, as a tradition. It has, for a long time, been a tomb of the spiritually dead, a place for people to marvel at and admire, but rarely a place for Christian worshippers to go. Churches are a place for Christians to worship, praise, and commune; this building has had little of that and has been no more than a museum for many years.
What a bizarre, unsubstantiated opinion. You've clearly never attended mass or vespers there. Certainly, it attracts many tourists (and nothing wrong with that), but it is also a parish church and an intimate spiritual home for many from far and wide, including Christians and agnostics from beyond France.
My uncle took me and my brother there for midnight mass in 1969. I’ll never forget the experience. Sad beyond words.

It sucks that I didn’t really know or care much about the structure until it caught fire and was nearly destroyed. Terrible to imagine such a magnificent structure not be able to be restored or if it does a portion of my life knows that the structure was in ruin.

The first time I visited Notre Dame (2003), I couldn't get over the fact that there was so much water damage inside. This treasure was falling apart back then...
I was there just a few days ago. There are massive wood arches under the flying buttresses to keep the arches stable, as they are scared the flying buttresses--which are designed to keep the walls from bowing out--would push the walls in! There is a concern that the building will start shifting. The whole time I kept wondering how they were going to get the scaffolding--that had melted together--removed. A local friend noted a recent report that said they had finally secured the scaffolding enough to begin disassembling it. Just to get the place to a starting point for reconstruction is mind-boggling.
They could remove as many artifacts as they can, such as the rose window, tear down the structure, and then rebuild it brand new. They can make it an exact replica, putting all the art exactly where it was originally.
