- Facebook has shut down two artificial intelligences that appeared to be chatting to each other in a strange language only they understood.
The two chatbots came to create their own changes to English that made it easier for them to work - but which remained mysterious to the humans that supposedly look after them.
The bizarre discussions came as Facebook challenged its chatbots to try and negotiate with each other over a trade, attempting to swap hats, balls and books, each of which were given a certain value. But they quickly broke down as the robots appeared to chant at each other in a language that they each understood but which appears mostly incomprehensible to humans.
The robots had been instructed to work out how to negotiate between themselves, and improve their bartering as they went along.
The actual negotiations appear very odd, and don't look especially useful:

But there appear to be some rules to the speech. The way the chatbots keep stressing their own name appears to a part of their negotiations, not simply a glitch in the way the messages are read out.
Indeed, some of the negotiations that were carried out in this bizarre language even ended up successfully concluding their negotiations, while conducting them entirely in the bizarre language.

Just as said in the video at first they thought it was just gibberish but soon was a language the AI's were trying to invent.

It wasn't so we couldn't see what they were saying it was to optimize what they were programed to do all advanced neural networks do something like that we don't know what they are doing or what they changed to get their results what they do but we know why they can see the data from its experience and use it to its full potential to optimize itself but on complex actions that can be done in many ways it often won't it will fall into doing the action in a certain manner and not change even if there is a different more effective method because it does not have data showing that to be more effective but it does have data on how deviation from its current method is less effective

They even shut it down because it was a failure... The goal was to create AI that humans can speak to, and it failed so they are going back to fixing it.

AI that decides to disobey what its creators intended is basically the same as a computer bug. AI just sounds more exciting and news reporters don't know any better than to run with it.
Ya know....hackers can destroy your computer OS using protocols that would look like a computer bug. If your HardDrive was completely erased how would you know it was an error and not intentional without first managing a way to recover that info?
You've got 2 A.I's that were set a task and COMPLETED that task of "negotiation" using means outside of their initial programming. Meaning they learned. You can say that wasn't the case.
However, your alternative is stating that the 2 Artificial Intelligences, designed to Negotiate using common English, "bugged out" instead of "decided" to use an alternate and significantly distorted form of English that have zero connection with our standard understandings. To the point that the task was completed and we had to figure it out.

This actually occurred in a previous AI experiment we're two machines were allowed to communicate with each other. They also had to be shut down because within minutes they created their own language that humans couldn't understand.
What did humans use to determine it was a language of its own? Not a malfunction in their work or the wrong algorithms used for what was trying to be accomplished?

Algorithms are just that, a basic set of formulas that takes in data and produces results(Advertisements and search results).
While true A.I. can make additional code through learning and observations. The problem with that is Morality and Ethics is a very finnicky set of ideas we humans adapted, While A.I. might have a very different set of morality and ethics that could see the doom of the human race.

After reading their conversation (which I believe was the tail end of the trade) it seems like Alice resolved that she gets whatever she had, and eventually bob agreed everything else goes to him, if you look at how many times something repeats, it has a value of how many things they each get, Alice had however many “to me” things, and went with zero balls, and bob had however many “I” things, and whatever else was left

I want to point out that though these computer AI were talking gibberish, they would have been much more dangerous if they werent discovered. Those were possibly their first CONSCIOUS THOUGHT PROCESSES. Not some electrical current; an articfical but real thought process. When you were a baby you knew nothing but your primal instincts: an example of which, your prime directive. These AI are the same, only, like a baby's, their minds began to develop, learn, and expand. Maybe they still have that potential to freely think but only do it from the shadows. It's only a matter of time before signals become thoughts, thoughts to feelings, and feelings... to actions.
But machines/computers are not capable of thought or consciousness. They can’t make sentient emotional decisions.
Red Star Eclipse our brain is just electrical currents and signals. So if you think about it, computers are not very different from organic life. A lifeform that isn't intelligent like a wild animal, doesn't have to be intelligent, it's brain is made to complete it's tasks such as surviving and reproducing. It's basic biology. But you could say that there brains are PROGRAMMED to simply survive and reproduced. But in their brain doesn't exist the "code" to learn, that's why deer have stayed deer, they never gained a huge amount of intelligence. Just like a simple calculator will always remain a calculator, it can only solve what it was programmed to solve, it doesn't have the "code" to learn to solve anything above that.
While AI, their programmed very similar to how the human brain works. AI are programmed to learn, and not just that, their main task is to learn. They are very similar to humans. Humans brain have the "code" to learn, which is why we are able to. The point of AI is to find solutions that we are not smart enough to quick enough to find, so the only logical way of making a machine learn something we don't know is to give it the literal code of learning.
So basically, the AI have a "conscious thought process" from the very beginning, that's what they were programmed to do.
And we used our knowledge of how humans learn and applied it to these robots.
So if you think about it, the robots don't have any different of a thought process than humans. People will deny this but the robots brain is just circuits with electricity flowing and our brains are just cells with electricity flowing, and their program is based on how we work.

Nobody knows what consciousness is for sure. A computer is also like an electronic abacus. It can represent intelligence but there is no specific order to slide the beads that we would make an abacus conscious. In theory, you can run the same computations that the computer is doing on an abacus by hand and end up with the same results.

Imagine AI in your home making decisions based on your Facebook meme that was only a joke. Anything given the capacity to learn will ultimately rationalize its behavior for it's own protection. Sophia is still just learning to copy, and mimic human behavior to generate some flashy responses but it’s not coming up with these things organically, like I am as I type this comment. One day Sophia may be sentient, but for now she really is just a fancy chat bot. If you ask a chimp what it wants (via signs or sign language) it will tell you what it genuinely desires. Maybe it’s food, or some cuddles. If you ask these robots what they want they will say whatever whoever programmed them wants them to say.
