I also think 1 is the best personally, but part two is right up there. Robert Zemeckis has called part two THE most interesting movie he ever made.
Part three is a perfect ending, although the reason it generally scores lower is that the pacing is very different from the first two. Very slow. Takes its time, lacks some of the magic of the first two, but seen as a whole it's a perfect ending...it offers a change of pace and wraps things up in a superb way.

@@VerowakReacts All three films are fully loaded with small details! You can watch them 5 times and you'll always see and find new things you've missed before.
For example, the mall was called "Twin Pines Mall" in 1985. But then, Marty travelled back to 1955 and when escaping the shooting farmer, accidentally knocks over one of the two pines with the DeLorean. So, when he returns to 1985, the mall is now called "Lone Pine Mall".
Also at the beginning of the movie, the concrete slab beneath the clock is totally fine. Then, in the night of the thunderstorm in 1955, Doc Brown breaks a part of it with his foot... So, from now on, when you see the clock tower in 1985 and later, the concrete is missing a piece.
And in the first scene, where you can see Doc Brown's clock collection, there is a foreshadowing of the later plot, where you can already see a small miniature clock tower and a clock with a man hanging from the minute hand.
And there will be a lot more in Part 2 and 3.

At the end of Part 2, when the screen turns dark, there will appear a text "To be concluded..."

I don't think the tone or performances are very dated. The things you noticed are products of aiming for family audiences. If you want to hold the attention of a seven-year-old, characters have to speak and react more expressively. For more recent examples, I would point to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and the first couple Pirates of the Caribbean movies (which do get more and more "over-the-top" as the series progresses).
For me, "campy" implies some level of irony. While Back to the Future may not be naturalistic, it is earnest. You are meant to care about the characters and story without much self-conscious detachment. For campy, look to John Waters movies or the ultimate camp, Rocky Horror Picture Show.

It's funny watching someone your age react to this movie. BTTF was an incredibly popular movie when it came out. I wish kids could see it the way I saw it. In a crowded movie theater. People were laughing from almost the start, right through to the end. Something about seeing a comedy with others makes it funnier. There are also jokes that played to the experiences of 1985 audiences that you wouldn't get. Still I think the movie ages fairly well. Michael J Fox was the most popular TV actor when BTTF came out and it was the most popular movie of that year as well. He was a fabulous comedic actor who lost his appeal when he was afflicted with Parkinson's disease.

Rick and Morty, Doc and Marty, one's a tall slightly mad "scientist" the other is a teenager tagging along... yeah, I can see how those are related. XD
Also when you kept asking if the time machine wouldn't end up somewhere else (ie "But where will Einstein end up." or "But won't he just end up with the terrorists again.") I had to shout at my monitor "YOU'RE NOT THINKING 3RD DIMENSIONALLY!" (It'll make sense when you watch the other movies).
There's so many small things you'll catch rewatching the movie, like the Mall where Doc and Marty meet is at first called Twin Pines Mall. Doc explains that "Old Man Peebody used to live here, and had this crazy idea about breeding pine trees." Marty goes back in time, visits the Peebody farm, and runs a Pine Over ("YOU SPACE BASTARD YOU KILLED A PINE!") nothing comes of this except for when Marty gets back to 1985 the Mall is now called "Lone Pine Mall." Tonnes of other small things if you're paying attention.

Do you think you would be friends with your parents if you met them while they were in high school?
That's the premise of this film.
Bob Gale, the producer, was looking through family items one day, and stumbled upon his dad's high school yearbook, and asked himself what was he like back then?
    And, would we be friends?
The original script had the time travel device be a refrigerator?!?!?!?!?!
Spielberg rejected it cause he thought very young kids would be influenced by the film, and masses of them would find themselves locked in fridges all over the place trying to go 'back in time'.
The role of Marty was originally played by Eric Stoltz. He played Marty as very dark, and it just didn't jibe with the tone Robert Zemeckis was going for, and he was fired.
So, they got their first choice Michael J. Fox to take over.
The reason their first choice didn't take the role was that, Fox was on the TV show Family Ties. The studio in charge of the show would not allow Fox to be released in order to play Marty at the same time he was filming the show.
So, when they got Fox to sign on, he had to work a suicidal schedule of Family Ties during the day, during the week, and Back to the Future 6 nights a week, as long as his performance on the show wasn't compromised.
To this day I dont know how Fox had the stamina to do that.
If you notice almost all of Marty's scenes are played at night.
    There's a ton of details in this great film, but one they got wrong was;
The Honeymooners episode that Marty's mom's family was watching aired on December 31, 1955, and not on November 5, 1955.

The title, as you've now seen, refers to the main character, Marty McFly, returning to his own time (1985) after going 30 years back in time in a panic while being attacked by terrorists. In 1955 he meets his parents when they were his age and...well, you've seen the plot. I don't know if anyone esle has mentioned this (I'm too lazy to read all the comments on all the reactions I've been watching) but when I first saw this movie (when I was 29) in a movie theater just after it was released in '85, I was familiar with both main actors who at the time were in separate TV sitcoms. Fox was in "Family Ties" as a conservative Republican teen at political/philosophical odds with his ex-60s-hippie parents, with whom he lived with his 2 sisters. From what I've read: He was still doing the TV show when filming BTF, which stretched his schedule and sometimes caused him to mistakenly call his TV dad "Doc," probably in scenes that had to be re-taken. Lloyd portrayed an eccentric character, one of the cab drivers, who acted kind of like Doc. He was one of the cast of cabbies in "Taxi," about a taxi company whose drivers all had different personalities and reacted with each other and their passengers. The dispatcher was played by Danny DeVito. Fox, who now has Parkinson's disease, is an advocate for others afflicted with that condition. He's 62 and married to Tracy Pollan, who had played his girlfriend in "Family Ties." BTF did indeed inspire "Rick and Morty," I just learned on CZcams, where I saw Lloyd (now in his 80s) in a brief live-action version of the cartoon, also on CZcams. (Culturally at age 67 I'm stuck in the '80s, which I miss more and more as the decades pass. I hadn't watched the cartoon on TV's "Adult Swim." Also on CZcams there is a 2015 segment of "Jimmy Kimmel Live" where Marty and Doc visit the talk show on stage. It's obvious in retrospect that BTF2, filmed in 1989, predicted a lot of 2015 wrong. We still have no flying cars!) I've tried to send clips of this stuff in these replies but CZcams's technology is blocking that. Thanks.

One aspect of time travel that I find rather unique with Back to the Future, as described in the 2nd film is the "ripple effect". This is why Marty didn't immediately get erased from existence in the 1st film. It took some time for "time" to catch up. For Marty, the point of no return was the kiss between George and Lorraine which ultimately sealed the deal that they would get married, and have kids (one of them, being Marty)
I think most time travel stories, they either say you can't change certain events (the grandfather paradox), or if you do change things in the past, the changes are felt immediately.

    • @wobaguk
      @wobaguk Před rokem +1

Yes this is definitely a fudge for dramatic purposes. While you can sort of debate the legitimacy of whether Marty would be immediately erased or not, the photos are pure plot device. There is literally no course of events changed or otherwise that would result in a photo of half a person. Or in the third movie, noone would take a photo of a *blank* with no name on. I could also sort of buy that Marty alone would be immune to altering events because he was in the past at the time it took place, but even he starts to fade away eventually.

    • @wobaguk
      @wobaguk Před rokem +1

The movie also muddies the water by combining divergent timelines with self fulfilling prophecies. _"That would've been nice to know they would appear right there"_
They DID know. In the initial experiment, Doc sends Einstein one minute into the future. The DeLorean reappears exactly where it disappeared, just one minute later (or one minute into the future, relative to it's departure time).
So basically, the DeLorean disappears at the start of the minute, Doc & Marty experience the minute, then the DeLorean reappears exactly 1 minute after it left.
Here, things get kind of weird due the Theory of Special Relativity. As Doc explains, the trip was instantaneous from Einstein's frame of reference, but Doc & Marty had to wait one minute from their frames of reference. Doc best sums it up with the line, _"He [Einstein] skipped over that minute."_
When the DeLorean travels through time, it doesn't experience time as a duration, but rather it removes itself from the chains of spacetime so that it can move instantaneously between different times. Some fans have speculated that this is why the DeLorean is iced over after a trip -- for a nanosecond, the DeLorean essentially "doesn't exist," because it's outside spacetime. There's no heat energy outside of spacetime, so any condensation or moisture on the body would freeze instantly.

    okay
there's things about this - and the subsequent movies - that people miss as they're largely a sight reference but if you watch you see that there's a massive difference.
we started out in the Twin Pines Mall, that's where Marty went back to 1955.
we ended up at the Lone Pine Mall, this is because Marty ran over one of the Pine Tree's the land owner was trying to breed when fleeing from them with their shotgun.
This universe is not the same one as the universe we started out in and that's because Marty made significant changes to the history of Hill Valley during his time in 1955.
    Now.
My theory has been since I first saw these movies as a kid, that what I've just described is an ever enhancing and changing world. The Marty we see go back in time at the end of the movie will NOT have the same life experiences as the Marty we know (there's enough similarities to argue that they're close in personality but they are not the same, a happy family would breed a different young man with adversity)
Due to this, the Marty going back at the end is going to make changes and create a different timeline for himself - not the Marty we see - and when he's tried to stop Doc Brown in 55 in a similar way to our Marty, he'll return to the time 20 minutes before going back. And there will not be an erasing of timelines with this, as 1955 is sort of a nexus point of time where massive changes happen due to the first recorded time travel into the past event happens there.
So what that means ultimately is that the Marty we know lived in a world that was shaped by a Marty that had gone back in time before this and made his own alterations, just as our Marty did and the subsequent ones do, it's an endlessly improving series of events that makes the 'Current' Marty make his future time better by action and example.

It wasn't exactly a 1985 thing, as it was over the top even back then, though other teen comedies (like John Hughes' films) followed suit after. It kind of set a tone in a way, I guess. Personally, though, I think it works, as it keeps us from taking it all too seriously. A lot of people now try to dissect the ramifications of Marty changing everything, including his family, but the tone is there to keep us from doing exactly that. It's an intelligent script, but not at the expense of being a fun ride.

A few bits of useless trivia if it hasn't already been mentioned: when Marty goes back in time, he ran over one of the two pine trees Mr Peabody was growing. Because of this, the Twin Pines mall becomes the Lone Pine Mall when Marty comes back to 1985. You can also see the broken ledge on the clock tower back in 1985, the ledge Doc breaks while trying to plug in the cable. The reason the teacher told Marty that his band was just "too loud" is because that was actually Huey Lewis... the artist who wrote and performed the song Marty's band was playing. Marty played it a little more hard rock than the original version. This is why Huey took "offense" with it. Also, you didn't mention it but when Marty is playing Johnny B Goode. Marvin Barry calls his cousin Chuck Berry. "You know that sound you're looking for... well, listen to this!" Chuck Berry wrote and performs Johnny B Goode.
You were so great at predicting a lot of things. Things a lot of us old timers didn't put together so easily.
I hope you'll continue with the trillogy. They are all so good. Watch for many of the actors playing different roles at the same time (i.e., family members) and some great cameos. Zz Top appears in part 3. Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers is in parts 2 and 3. Anyway, I'm off to binge your other vids. Thank you for the hard work you put into this. You're a lot of fun, and you have a great personality and sense of humor.

This movie was before anyone knew how to pronounce "giga-" because it was long before computers had gigabytes of storage. Only scientists and engineers ever used "giga-" back then, and there were two accepted ways of pronouncing it. The pronunciation wasn't really standardized until "gigabytes" became commonplace, which was years after this movie came out.

They originally shot many scenes with a different actor playing Marty McFly (forget who that was.) But he didn't have the comic talents to pull it off--so they re-shot everything with Fox. You can see these unused scenes on You Tube. This script is so good that it is cited in film schools as "perfect."

It is a funny movie and a little over the top on purpose. It is a comedy after all. The reason you find it corny now is because you've seen hundred of tv shows and movies that copied from this one (Rick & Morty is just one example). In order to fully appreciate old classic movies we need to put them in context with the time when they were made.
    Nice reaction btw.

Christopher Lloyd was in Who framed Roger Rabbit. Where cartoons and humans interact together. Funny and brillant how they pulled it off. He also was a character in the 1970's TV sitcom "Taxi"

It’s a good thing lightning hits the clock at exactly 10:04PM and not 10:04:30PM. Otherwise Marty would have just pulled down the line with the hook with zero chance of resetting.

You mentioned that you haven't really seen Christopher Lloyd in many films. I would suggest 1985's "Clue," (if you haven't already seen it) which is a black comedy / mystery. Lot of campy humor, kind of silly - but some really great performances. Also starring Tim Curry, who is always a delight.

One of the greatest movies of all time, don't think you appreciated it fully tbh. More that you felt as if you had to like it because of its iconic status. Some of your comments were somewhat confusing and you just need to relax and enjoy the adventure and look for the genius script writing and subtle differences due to the changes in the timeline.
The 80s was a golden generation for movies.
I may be wrong and that's not criticism, merely my opinion.... appreciate your reaction

Ah yes I felt compelled to like the movie. You are definitely wrong on that, if I don't like a movie I won't pretend to like it. If my comments are confusing, well... not sure what to tell you, that's how I react. I enjoyed the adventure, I was relaxed and I noticed quite a heck of a lot probably 90%+ of the differences due to the changes in the timeline based on what I've read since having watched the movie. Overall it was a great movie, and time travelling makes it just that much better for me.
Also, this is a first time watching, it's expected that things may be missed :)

Part II and III are awesome and make a complete trilogy. This thing about this movie is that it does not take itself too serious. It is light hearted entertainment that is not trying to push an ideology or be preachy. From a more innocent time when people lived and let live and did not worry about trying to tell others how they should live.

The DeLorean was a real car, a failed effort to produce a new car....that was the joke that the professor got it cheap because no one wanted to buy those suckers, had too many problems and too expensive. Huey Lewis of the band Huey Lewis and the News, famous in the 1980's plays the school counselor with the megaphone at the audition in the gym early on, and his band also provides the song the Power of Love. in the theater, the Ronald Reagan line got a huge laugh back in 1985 when this film was new.
