@@HistoricalWeapons I would say not really. That’s very generalized. In the world stage, the Mongols are an exception, not a rule. If being horse archers was all it took, the entire world would of adopted it. Horse archers do very well the flat plains they developed by nomadic civilizations who grew up with the horse as part of their culture. Chariot culture lasted many thousands of years longer.

@@HistoricalWeapons Well, even then, did you read my whole response? Few cultures pulled off horse archery at a level to dominate. The Turks and Persians used horse archers well but even they adapted when faced with disciplined heavy Calvary and infantry. It seems that most cultures who used horse archers outside Mongolia, was more novelty and nobles due to the level of money it takes to keep a horse and time to train. Samurai were excellent horse archers as well, but the sword cult more or less took over after a few centuries.
Legend forgot to look at Volkmar. Would have really liked to have known how he’d level him up from here.

If you tell free company militia to melee attack, they'll run units down while shooting at them. Great for chasing broken units like that hell pit at the end, or chasing missile units down while actually doing some damage.
Agreed. It's incredibly useful to chase away the ranged units by just marching your Free Company around the side and then sweeping their backline. Just don't let your guys CATCH the enemies they're chasing.

@@vitaliitomas8121 they're not *bad* but their damage output isn't the best in melee. The real issue is you can chase more units than you can fight. Like, your FCM chases away 3 units of goblin archers. If it catches up to one, the other two will turn around and begin firing again, which usually means that FCM unit is screwed.
You want to maintain Movie Monster Distance, just close enough so they feel threatened and flee. Then your FCM can chase them and shoot them in the ass the whole time.

@@vitaliitomas8121 especially effective against shielded ranged units because they will turn and run and waste their shield bonus. for such a cheap empire unit the fcm is rly hardcore^^

I feel like casting Comet on the AI is best when you've got something small pinning them down. I love it on Heavens wizards when I'm Herostacking.
Loved using FCM in Volkmars army with the ap and magic damage skill really good army combined with a few warrior priests and hellstorms
The Acceleration/Decceleration buff is the real MVP.
I never recruit Heaven Wizards as Empire and it's kinda fun that he has the same voice as Bretonnia lords
The trick to getting them to shoot their own troops is simple, but hard to master. It's basically their artillery ---> their troops -----> then you, position-wise. You have to time it to right about when they are going to shoot, which you can watch and learn as a lot of artillery has a sort of wind-up mechanic and shows when its about to shoot. Right before that, you have to change your movement to be moving towards their troops, so the artillery will think you are moving towards them and will aim to shoot where you will be, which is closer, not farther away. However, if they have other troops that can shoot you, it can be difficult as you probably will be moving straight towards them and they can hit you easily. It really is situational, but can be done.
Bombardment spells are specifically for artillery.
Good to know that, in my recent Empire faction game, I chose the approved of result from that dilemma at the end... XD

@legend if the celestial mage sounds Bretonnian its because the voice actor is the same as generic warrior lords for Bretonnia. I believe the Bretonnian prophetess is also the same as Supreme sorceresses from the DE.

LegendofTotalWar, good video! Does pardoning the captives return them to your opponent for them to use in future battles? I know it did that in Medieval 2.
No all captives are functionally dead when they are captured. It does affect diplomatic ratings and they hate you less for picking ransom over kill or replenish, but all captives are DOA.

yeah there is a ton going on "under the hood" of this game. i'm thankful to legend and others like mercythemad and dameoffensive for being good teachers of everything going on

Hello Legend. In my recent games, against Sylvania, i fought them in 3 different battles, where i hid my main army in forest, and had a fast calvalry and flying mage on the other side of the map to bait. they searched ever damned tree until they found them. i guess they made the ai a bit smarter or something
The AI roughly knows where your units are when they are hidden. That has always been the case.
When the AI can't see anything, they fan out and search. You've got to kill them before they find you.
I suspect the AI has a built in bias for where the player hides the bulk of their troops for scenarios where the player abuses the hide mechanic. I've had it happen quite a bit recently where the AI beelines it to my hidden stack of cheese without considering other hidy-holes.
@KIDAS i wa using the wizard to to thin them out. They've also sent 1 unit to chase after my cavalry. The rest of their many wolves/cavalries made a wide search and no fake dive prevented them from going on. It was a huge map with many forests around Avernheim area
If i were you legend i would have split free company militias into two groups and sent one of them to hiding in the opposite side of the map in the woods and would have used the bait and switch tactic in two different place and this could divide them even more
The "vanguard" unit of free company could have been isolated and killed though, they cannot have speed advantage against skaven.

If you look more carefully there is a huge gap between volkmar hidden forces and skaven forces when they are pursuing the wizard over the other side of the map
With 45 speed i am quite sure they could manage to reach the other side and hide in time without getting caught by skaven and this even could make a split in the skaven forces and he could capitalize on it even further

I am absolutely sure that his vanguard could easily reach the other side before getting caught by skaven
Deep vanguards of Free Company are great ways to murder artillery crew.

Old timey black powder weapons were potent, but not over a great range. Flaws in the craftsmanship meant that after a certain distance, musketballs do nothing. At least, that's my understanding.
Balance wise, Fire Whilst Moving AP missiles on cheap skirmish infantry wouldn't be fair for other factions or the way armor is used by unit-tier.

As Empire player. When i first used FCM i thought they were sh*t. Then after 2-3 playthrughts and 1 Legendery I think they are one of the best early game units that punch really hard for its price. Late game only good FCM version is Regiment of renown that have AP damage.
The FCM in Volkmar's army can also get AP via his special skill line. I had a recent campaign run on L/VH with Volkmar leading an army composed of mainly FCM, some Warrior Priests and a few Hellstorm Rocket Batteries and that shit slapped hard.
The recent buff skills for FCM, Empire Knights and Flagellants shows the incredible power of hidden stats. The Acceleration and Deceleration buffs make running and gunning ludicrously easy. A FCM in Karl's army vs a FCM in Volkmar's army, totally different units.

Well, while I understand your point, you don't HAVE to use that tactic. You don't HAVE to use cheese. You are playing against the computer so you can fight the battle the way you want. You are the creator of your fun.
Free company militia seem good on paper. Ranged infantry that are decent in melee? Hell yeah! But on higher difficulties they suffer from the lack of range and ap missiles. Ok in early game, sucks in mid and late game.
in volkmars army they do have decent ap and they are 120 entities instead of the standard less than 100 entities for ranged units so their damage output is quite high, frequently chunking enemy melee units as they close in
FMC are essential the gap between basic melee infantry and shooty one, but on a lower level.
They're f***ing amazing early game... just they get outdated very quickly too, and need to be replaced pretty much as soon as they are
