Is more female representation in music really an issue? Like come on. It's one of those most ethnically and sexually diverse artforms in the world. Why make it out like it's mind blowing for there to be an all girl group

Hey Valerie, I'll preface this by saying I'm in the group/helped write this speech -- so I know I'm biased here. I'll also say that I hear you, and I don't disagree with you, that it isn't entirely helpful to point out gender in certain contexts. But in the realm of jazz, and specifically composition and arranging worlds, while things are slowly starting to trend differently, these communities have existed as male dominated and somewhat gate kept for years. For context: this particular award has been in existence for 61 years, and of those 61 years, men have won 56 times. This year marked the third time (in 61 years!!) a woman has won in collaboration with a man. Women (alone) have only won twice. While I hear you, and appreciate the dialogue, the facts are in the numbers and it goes without saying that this specific award has existed as a long standing male dominated category, and deserved (in our opinion) to be acknowledged as a win for women -- and independent artists! Keep making music
