HESSLE AND HILL TOP: Wakefield Parish #14 of 30

Time for another Wakefield one then, and this time we're going very rural in the form of a parish that covers 5.4 square kilometres but only has a meagre population of just 109 people. Generally speaking this one is more about the lovely West Yorkshire countryside and the amazing scenery it offers than it is about any kind of amenities or local history.
That's not to say there isn't any. You only have to look as far as the main settlement to find a pub which is described online as being very traditional, and it has records of it's landlords all the way back to 1822. Coal and stone were mined and quarried in this area, and if you remember the Ackworth episode, the main village here is referenced on the fancy looking signpost near Ackworth quarry.
There's no less than five Grade II listed buildings in this one including a hall that dates from 1641, and then there's the amazing Wragby Cross which is one of the best war memorials I think I've ever seen in a parish. There's also a small chapel which unfortunately I couldn't get access to (and I'm hoping the locals can unearth some information about it for me!)
The whole area is right next to Nostell Priory and take note of the name Winn (or Wynn) which crops up in this episode because it once belonged to Charles Wynn. Nostell Priory along with St Oswald's church which lies within it's boundaries will be covered in the Huntwick with Foulby and Nostell episode, but for today we have its next door neighbour which is much more chill, and at one with the peace of rural life.
