Well said! How did learning a language become so meaningless? Here in Spain they are totally exam focused and few students can actually have a real life conversation. I love teaching English but hate the system. I try to get my students to communicate but I know that what they really want is to pass that next exam so they can add it to their CV.
Exactly , my impression is that they want a mark and then forget it as soon as possible, rarely people bother reading, speaking or writting in English if they are not obliged to.
I feel the same way, 95% of my adult students aren't really interested in learning English, they just want to pass that exam for their CV. I find it very frustrating that students don't understand that you can't past an exam you do not have the level for and that time and work (motivation, interest in learning - or whaterver you wish to name it) is needed to require that level. More often than not, students say to me that they only want to learn the model answers to pass the exam. ..

I've been reading all of your comments and I must say your writing is flawless. This tells me that we get to practise writing more as compared to speaking, hence the gulf is visibly big.However, I want I want to believe that if we were to practise speaking more, our English proficiency will know no bounds. It a matter of being consistent with practice.

I suspected that the tests limit us! There are so many options to answer one question, but when they say your answer is incorrect, and you start doubting yourself
that is clear truth, not only for language learning. I also realised that most english lessons don't keep up with Internet era, where almost everyone should know english for accessing basic information and making content.
That's exactly the reason why I stopped testing my students long time ago. I go for communication rather than tests. Shame of schools, anyway, trying to teach English in the same old way as 50 years ago with no better luck. Spain is really behind in the way the language is being taught.

I’ve been teaching English for nearly 20 years and I’ve come to the same conclusion - test are useless, the only people who are to be tested are the teachers themselves”.

uffff. Let's measure the theaches... What a difficult topic. Here, in Chile, the governmet approved a law to make periodical evaluations to the teaches. Inmediatly, all the teachers starts a huge strike all over the country. "We studyed, we are proffesional. We ar not being evaluated" "I already finish my carrer and became teacher, I won't be evaluated" They felt so insulted that the strike obligated the gobernment to suspend the law.

To know that all the answers were correct doesn't mean I'm happy with my performance. Any times I hesitate mean I don't know. It doesn't mean : yeah ! I'm good at English. Anyway I don't like QCM tests. There is always a possibility to find the answer only by chance. QCM help teachers to mark. That is its only purpose.

Anyway I don't like QCM tests. There is always a possibility to find the answer only by chance. QCM help teachers to mark. That is its only purpose.
