My 25 horse Kohler 2001 Grasshopper midmount, which I bought new now has 4735 hrs on it. I've replaced 1 deck spindle, 1 handlebar foam grip kit, 2 rod ends for the hydros, and 1 electric blade engagement clutch + normal wear items In 21 years! Grasshopper is the gold standard - period! I sold my 2002 turf tiger (25 hp Kohler) because it would bog in every challenging condition. That Scag was incredibly heavy, difficult to work on and not comfortable to ride on at all - it was a lumber wagon. And forget climbing grades. This comparison is nothing less than BS.

You are comparing a front mount mower (waaay more expensive in every brand) to a midmount, that doesn't make sense. That's the first problem. Certainly don't want to start an argument, nothing in it for me. I have mowed with Scags (most all models, my dad has ran Scags for 20 years) and Grasshoppers. My personal mower is a Grasshopper 727k. Scags are great mowers, no doubt. But Grasshoppers are in a class of their own. You should compare the scag to a grasshopper midmount (comparable model). If you notice, large commercial scale outfits (like the university that I work for), or other big establishments that have large-scale groundskeeping crews, will almost always run front-mount units. They are constantly doing deck maintenance (changing blades, cleaning baffles, etc) because of constant and rigorous use. Plus, the front mount allows you to mow up under hedges, fences, etc, thus less for the weedeater crew to do. Midmount mowers would not be practical at the university that I work at. It would be a nightmare. So for the extra 2,500-3k that a front mount costs, it's well worth it. Again, I don't want to argue, but in a homeowner setting, the Grasshopper and the Scag will both do a fine job and take a beating. But in a commercial setting, that Hopper will run circles around that Scag.
The old ones are fantastic, they have lost their sense of quality on newer machines, my 900D with 200 hours has been in the shop over a month in moving season. Mowed my lawn twice this year and down again. Very poor set up when factory released it with many many problems. No never again Grasshopper
i paid 15k for my 725 kabota diesel. it is much better than that gasser. also i rode scag for 5 years. last 12 years been on my hopper. that scag cant cant keep up with a hopper, i can tell you that. Also what attachments are available for a scag? none. grasshopper has a doser blade, snow blower, airator, chemical tank sprayer, tourbine blower, and more. also the grasshopper has the best vac available on the market.
I have a 2021 Grasshopper 526v and it’s literally the best machine I’ve ever used. This guy’s opinion of this machine is comical. Grasshopper is king, ask anyone that’s cut with all the big brands.

Dad bought a new 721 in I think 1997. Twenty years later engine was replaced and since then a spindle a pto switch and a seat, mower is still mowing every week when the grass is growing. That’s quality !
i have a 1991 618, gas, mow with every week for 5 hours, last year i replaced the motor, see my house was flooded (3ft) and the mower was in the shop. it went down, froze and busted. so i replaced the motor, the mower was so well designed, i has to clean a few switched but the deck mows great after a belt change and a grease job. Great design grasshopper.
This is probably the WORST review I have ever seen. Obviously he is a scag dealer. I have owned them all, I currently have a diesel Grasshopper and a Wright ZK dually. Any mower has faults, but the Hopper is a solid mower and has the ability for attachments. Also his ignorance shows cause grasshopper has a hydraulic deck lift that would float the deck with a push of a button, if the owner choose that option on his mower.
Smaller discharge opening = better suction, better lift, cleaner cut. It's easy to put a big hole on the side of a deck but that's not the point for QOC. There some Physics involved that you don't understand.
I think you're nitpicking, and Scagg is just as expensive and will not do half that Grasshopper can accomplish! Talking about a bad design, the way you put that lever on there with the cable, that's a trip hazard, so don't be talking about somebody's design on lawnmowers, when you can't even install something looks halfway decent!

One thing I've never met, a disappointment grasshopper owner. You use speculation only. I don't care how much clearance you got under the pully, grass doesn't fly off a deck lol. Scag and John deere are good mowers. Those grasshopper mowers last so don't listen to that speculation. Also that front mount can go under things your mid mower won't. They're all expensive, use your accounted to get that depreciation write off.

I won't buy another arrogant scag pile, Grasshopper all the way. No the grasshopper does not have aluminum spindles and they last way longer than a skank spindle. I will give him the wiring harness and tires but that is all. I have owned about every brand of commercial mower out there grasshopper spindles last way longer than scags,. The scagg rides way rougher, so mowing speed is reduced because of that. When you come in from mowing your body will thank you for buying the grasshopper, but your wallet won't until you find out you'll never have to buy another mower again for 30 years! I still have my 91 725 11,252 hours, my 93 721d 7,844 hours, and my 95 928d 8,074 hrs., all these mower still run and mow I've never had to replace a spindle in any of them. A Gemini drive in the 725 and 721 , belts, a clutch, tires pillow block bearings voltage regulatior, hoses, normal stuff. All these mowers are now my backup mowers ,I now run 900d's, and s026 stand on's, I've tried about all of them, all will mow, grasshopper lasts the longest.
At 200 hours my 900D has been nothing but problems, avoid this machine. It’s been at the shop for a month yesterday, very poorly built machine. My old 725D was bulletproof, this one is a headache that keeps getting worse.

I see several old Grasshoppers still going, can't say the same for Scagg. You can't beat the industrial diesel motor.

Worst review ever. Having had both, the 735 will outlast the Scag by 15 years.
Those grasshopper 735 ‘s are about 15k and the walker and scag are much better.
