That moment when you realize that Gandalf actually asked good questions based on exactly why people say good morning.
I've been thinking this for a long time, since I was a little kid, so I usually just say "hey how are you"
It's a greeting as well as a wishing of good fortune. It's polite or whatever.
@@crystlark Well I think "good morning" has a fair deal to do with being polite as well as being positive.
"...or are you simply stating that you have morning wood on this particular morning?"
Martin Freeman was so perfect for this role.
+Zerry Borger yes he's so charming.. I loved him right after this scene xD
I love how their friendship developed over the adventure. They start out so awkwardly and then in the end, they're inseparable.

"Gandalf?"
"Bilbo Baggins"
"Gandalf my old friend!!"

No one else on the planet could play Bilbo Baggins better than Martin Freeman.... He IS Bilbo Baggins!
ZukoHalliwell I think Martin Freeman captures the character's personality better.
InFiiLtRaTor Well, I haven't read the book, so I don't really have an opinion on that.
ZukoHalliwell Ian Holmes plays an elderly Bilbo Baggins, whereas Martin Freeman plays a fairly young Bilbo; it stands to reason that Bilbo would have changed through the decades.
That little "ʸᵉˢ" as he looks away like he's trying to hide his pride over the fireworks, I love it so much.

@@vujtuzcik5985 Mate, if you think Tolkien didn't ascribe human qualities like pride and malice to the maiar what do you think instigated Saruman's fall besides his pride and jealousy? Think for two seconds before you try correcting someone.
Ian Holm and Martin Freeman both played the two aspects of Bilbo perfectly! Ian embodied the withered, weary old Hobbit who spent the last 70 years of his life unknowingly holding a great Evil inside his pocket, Martin embodied the (relatively) young introverted Hobbit who just wants to stay at home and smoke in front of the fire place with a good book but gets roped into an adventure that will change his life.

The scene where Gandalf said: "You've changed, and not entirely for the better" was what the "better" part of that statement refered to.

its only the super lotr nerds who hate them. ive read almost all of tolkiens books and i really enjoy the movies.
I love how after Gandalf says he is looking for someone to share an adventure, there is just a split second where you see Bilbo looking very intrigued like he wants it and then he turns all prim and proper and says he wants nothing to do with it.

Silmarien Ingoldo it was kind of adorable, he looked genuinely proud lmao but bilbo just had to be sort of an ass
With all respect towards Cristopher lee, Gandalf was just MEANT for Ian Mcgellen..
I can't help but think if Bilbo was an animal, he would be a bunny. He sort of acts like one. He even lives in a hole.
Hobbit likes nature and likes feeling that they're home, I think you right about Bilbo Being a rabbit if he Was an animal. At first, he refuses Gandalf proposition for an Adventure then he accepts
J.R.R. Tolkien himself first conceived of Hobbits as rabbit-like creatures, but later he made them the short human-like beings they are now.
Martin Freeman himself mentioned that he saw Bilbo as a "meerkat" and incorporated it into his acting, most notably Bilbo's nose twitching!
Ian Holm is solidified as the OLD Man Bilbo, But I can't imagine anyone else other than Martin Freeman playing young Bilbo. So good.
“And gandalf means…Me!” Gosh its just so odd how a sentence so obviously purposefully grammatically wrong can sound so shakesperian. Tolkien truly wrote like no one else. A damn genius
It also makes sense considering Gandalf isn’t his real name, but a name people gave him when he began exploring the mortal world
Actually the name ‘Gandalf’ is a Germanic name that means magic staff elf.
This witty meeting of one wise wizard and one chill Hobbit started a domino effect that saved the entire world
This is all I needed from the Hobbit. I didn't need all the extensions or added characters or the forced as heck romance plot.. All I needed from the movies.. was scenes like this. Take em from the book and let the actors work their charm and the visual directors make it seem like Middle-Earth is really there as it all goes on. Yes. Even the songs. All I needed.. Most of all the extra stuff was just..garbage, frankly. Not all of it was. I liked Radagast, for instance..but still. This was it. What I wanted from the movies in a nutshell.
+Havic1137 Completely agree. I couldn't have expressed my thoughts on it better.
With any luck maybe someone will release an abridged version of all three films that condenses it to just the main plot.
Paul Garrett
I've thought of how the second film would have been 1/3 its length at most without the filler and have had the same "abridged" idea.
Paul Garrett I'm an aspiring editor, and I've thought about trying to make an abridged version.

Ian really is the perfect Gandalf, it really is as if he sprung from the pages of Tolkien's work.
Ian Mackellen and Martin freeman performed this scene flawlessly from the book but in a tone that I feel works with modern audiences
I read The Hobbit to my 3rd graders, for me mainly. Never have I seen such enthusiasm to finish other subjects so that they could hear more. It warmed my heart. A timeless classic that I’ll surely continue to pass on to willing ears. All love and respect to Tolkien ❤️

This scene made me realize that these movies are more faithful to the book than you might think.
Eric Cartman Well, Bilbo's conversation with Smaug is actually pretty faithful to the book.
Paragon Josh Yes, indeed. But the movie all in all...
Nah...
But the Smaug scene was epic.
Paragon Josh i actually read the book again and there are a lot of referentes of the book in this movie, i mean a lot: the scenes with the dwarfs in bag end are pretty much acurrate to the book, sane with the stone trolls, rivendel, goblins cave, gollum and bilbo, wargs' attack and the help of the eagles, beorn house, mirkwood, bard and laketown, smaug and bilbo, bilbo giving the akerstone to bard and thranduil, etc etc.
Bilbos face when Gandalf asks why he wouldn't still be "in buisness"! Martin Freeman is so talented.
His face at 0:52 is my face when someone tells me to stop being a nerd.
Avonlea Erickson you are the only one I know who uses proper grammar in an exclamation.
Hahaha I love Martin Freeman so much. I mean, this guy IS a hobbit.
Peter Jackson must have felt the same way; he wanted Martin Freeman from the start.
This scene was so good, one of my favorites. This moment between Bilbo and Gandalf is where EVERYTHING started. The banter between them is so charming and funny, so lighthearted in contrast to all the epic, action and darkness that is going to come afterwards. I was hooked on the series the moment I watched this scene.

Hobbit and Lord of the rings are my no.1 Favourite Movies of all time
This was definitely one of my favorite parts because it was exactly the same as the books intro.
Definitely this is one of the only scenes where they actually copied Word for Word from the book which is I like that
Say what you will about the movies, they nailed the most important scenes from the book.
See that's the thing. I've read the hobbit several times and I can say it was pretty faithful!
Some of them, their are moments like this they theirs that weird overly dramatic beorn scene.

Only Gandalf could make me question what the true meaning of “good morning” actually is
I remember in theaters when Bilbo said the last "Good morning" before he enters his home, everyone laughed.
i always loved the "I am Gandalf" line and comparing it to the animated movie.
the animated movie introduction is very "give me authority"
while this one is like "dude... its me. you dont remember me? that makes me glum..."

It’s so nice to know good morning were the words that started such an amazing saga
RIP Sir Ian Holm... “Never laugh at live dragons. Bilbo you fool”. 😞
This is one of my favorite exchanges in the book and I'm so happy they kept it!
Or are you simply stating that you had morning wood on this particular morning?
I believe that’s the meaning of "Wood morning !"... people get easily confused
I just read the book for the first time and I came back here to watch the scene again. If there is one thing I wish, that is for Bilbo line to be longer like in the book. He not just talked about the firework from Gandalf, he goes on and on and on about the story of Gandalfs adventures. That is why Gandalf realizes beneath his common hobbit nonchalant is an adventurous heart, that is why Gandalf decide to take him on the adventure. Cutting that part out make it feel like Gandalf just force the adventure against Bilbo's will for no reason.
I think the movie already implies he was once adventurous.. hence the, "you've changed"
Nevertheless, i kinda agree he did force him. Well, hes gandalf after all.
In my opinion every film makes great contributions to the series. This scene is a great example of why I think An Unexpected Journey is the most fun entry.

I've always liked Bilbo's outfit in this scene; reminds me of Easter

Ian has the voice of a grandfather that would read you the best fairytales before bed.
Bilbo the only fictional character in the world that would rather sit at home and smoke Hash instead of going on an adventure with Wizards.
I'm with Bllbo, frack going on a dangerous journey with a bunch of rude and a#hole dwarves and a dodgy wizard I've never seen before. Id rather have a nice delicious fish fry dinner with some ale and then smoke my weed before a nice compy beauty sleep.
I just love the interpretation of Biblo here. He's a lot more cynical than his book counterpart, but it works so well.
Bilbo is awesome character. I don't get why he reminds me of Pippin. Yeah Bilbo's adventure was different from Frodo's adventure. Funny scene.
Gandalf is one friend that anyone need in their life
One of my favorite movie scenes ever.
One of my favourite scenes of the Unexpected Journey. So well played by Martin Freeman and just incredibly delightful
I never could get into any of the Lord of the rings movies. Surprisingly I was hooked with the hobbit movies from the first to the last. I love the actor martin Freeman as Bilbo much more than the guy who played frodo.
That scene, read over and over again, and then watch it on screen. SPEECHLESS
I think about this scene all the time. It's classic.
LOLOLOLOLOL I fucking love the he says "West of Bree" OMG its so hilarious!
0:18 I'm doing my best to memorize this sentence, so I can use it everytime someone says Good morning!
"Make you late for dinner."
They also make you late for second breakfast, elevensies, luncheon, afternoon tea...
Even though Bilbo was mousey, Gandalf knew he was capable because he was standing up to him
Every day I went to school and teachers would say good morning, I would say the same things Gandalf said and they all gave me the same look that Bilbo gave Gandalf. There was only one teacher I had that got the reference.
The moment you realise that Gandalf looks a lot like Dumbledore from Harry Potter.
I'm reading this chapter from my 1977 copy to my 5th Graders tomorrow. Here for a bit of review (left the book at school).

Martin Freeman played an amazing Young Bilbo 💗
Acting between two great actors is a treat.

I paused the video between 1:20 and 1:21 and got a goofy screen shot of Bilbo sticking his tongue out. Why did that cheer me up so much?...
Bilbo is so much better than Frodo. He is basically Frodo + Sam in 1.
"It will be most amusing for me" I totally missed that line the first time lmao
lol Bilbo be smoking a joint getting high hahahaha
Bilbo always has that motherf***ing thang on em’. Always “Tolkien” if you know what I mean.
The trilogy may not be perfect but my god Am I glad they did it still! The scenes that do work (and they are many) work perfectly! This is one of them and in my opinion the best scene with Gandalf.
Imagine if we had gotten a Hobbit today with an abysmal take like Rings of power instead.
This was the best thing ever
just seeing how these two got their friendship started xD
In a way, Gandalf actually sets the whole story of the Lord of the Rings in motion by asking Bilbo to join him on a Hobbits Journey.
gandalf definitely chose bilbo because they have the same piff dealer and he wanted a fellow stoner on the journey.
