Ian embodied the withered, weary old Hobbit who spent the last 70 years of his life unknowingly holding a great Evil inside his pocket, Martin embodied the (relatively) young introverted Hobbit who just wants to stay at home and smoke in front of the fire place with a good book but gets roped into an adventure that will change his life.

I just read the book for the first time and I came back here to watch the scene again. If there is one thing I wish, that is for Bilbo line to be longer like in the book. He not just talked about the firework from Gandalf, he goes on and on and on about the story of Gandalfs adventures. That is why Gandalf realizes beneath his common hobbit nonchalant is an adventurous heart, that is why Gandalf decide to take him on the adventure. Cutting that part out make it feel like Gandalf just force the adventure against Bilbo's will for no reason.
