Why you SHOULDN'T buy this Paint Sprayer: Graco TrueCoat 360 Review

  • The Graco TrueCoat 360 is a decent paint sprayer, but several features in particular make it hard to recommend to the average DIY Painter. In the right situation, the Graco TrueCoat 360 can be a handy tool, but those are few and far between.

When color matching cabinets with $50-per-quart factory paint… these are a must. Try sticking the hose from a Graco X5 in a quart and you end up with $40 worth of paint in a hose.

X5 is only good for spraying cheap drywall primer out of a 5-gallon. you waste over a quart just priming and cleaning it.

I love my Graco Trucoat 360. I painted a fence and deck around my pool in a small fraction of the time it would have taken with brushes and roller. I also painted all the doors in my remodeled basement, along with all the new trim. It took about 15 minutes to paint all the trim in a 1000 square foot basement, and the finish is great. The caveat is that I have never used another sprayer, so it is entirely possible that makes me like this more!

i have the DS model there a bit of a learning curve using it. i painter a 9-12 room all white ceiling walls etc it took me about 20 mins, i spent most time setting it up and cleaning it, mask everything you don't want paint on. On my job i as very impressed by how smooth the walls were. I think this will be my go to for painting. you will still need to use a brush and roller for small jobs and maybe a large machine for a whole house, it does get hot but it never over heated

I had only 1 day to paint a door and trim in an office. Didn't want to use airless due to a big overspray which means a lot of masking. Got this one handheld pump/sprayer. Ran one row of masking paper. Was done with the job in 2 hours and a can of acrylic semigloss water-based paint. Quick and awesome result. Paid less than $300. Saved $600 in masking, time to drive and get my airless (2 hours) from other jobsite, time to setup and time to clean airless. Not the best but it did the job. Paid for itself. Now I have a free tool.

So glad I found your channel. My kitchen cabinets are a shiny honey oak, kind of a depressingly dated ‘70s vibe. And I’d like to paint them Prussian Blue. I have two questions: 1) I see some people on CZcams sanding to prep while others use a liquid sandpaper like Klean Strip. How do I choose between the two? 2) Some use brush & roller to prime and paint while some spray. Again, how do I choose which approach to use?

Thanks for your channel. I find it very helpful! I was researching this very sprayer for cabinets and trim (as a homeowner). I also watched your video on your favorite cabinet paint. If you use the paint you recommended, do you use a clear coat for durability?

    • @diypainting
      @diypainting  Před rokem +1

Appreciate the comment! I don't use a clear coat. Most enamels are designed to be a top coat and not need a clear coat. I only use a clear coat if I am doing a glaze or some other specialty finish that needs to be protected.

I think its about the right tool for the job, I'm not getting out my x5 to pain a couple of bass boards, but this that is easier to setup, use and clean is what I would need for that job. I will use my X5 on walls and ceilings, bigger jobs. Thanks for pointing out the pressure fluctuation, that is good to know.

  • @avsararas7969

I have the larger magnum sprayer for general use, it is an amazing machine. But it is for big jobs mainly. Paint a 100 feet fence in minutes with perfection. Or buy the low pressure tip, paint fine cabinetry and get HVLP-looking satin/semi-gloss results without the burden of a compressor. The only real hassle is cleaning the entire thing after each use. To say, you cannot leave the machine as is since it will dry up in a day or two. So cleaning is inevitable.
For small-scale tasks I just got this to save big amount of paint (at least a quart) wasted with the magnum and clean easily. I think a serious(?) homeowner should have the both tools. I can buy just a sample size paint and spray it easily which is not an option on the magnum.
    Thanks for the insights!

  • @jrink0

Im glad Im not the only one that feels this way about these sprayers. I have the DSP model and the pulses are terrible and hard to work around. On low, it pulses terribly. On high you can avoid the pulsing if you slow down a bit. But when I slow down enough to avoid the pulsing, it applies too much material and runs. If i speed up to avoid runs, it starts to pulse again.
I bought it because I felt a sprayer with a hose would be a waste for smaller projects as the hose holds so much paint. Maybe thats just a sacrifice I have to make to get a quality finish.

    • @cpnmikes
      @cpnmikes Před 7 měsíci

That's my conundrum as well, I don't want to buy a whole lot of extra pain just to fill a hose and prime it, other people really like it, I'm trying to figure out whether to buy this or the X5 because the X5 is now $201 and this is $251 so the X5 is actually cheaper

Any thoughts on the gx-19 or hvlp 9.5? I purchased this 360 vsp unit. My mistake was assuming I had "tip options" for the 360. I saw all the different tips in the store and *assumed* I could use something "finer" / fine finish for cabinetry. (*and the Graco hvlp needles aren't used for this product either). The idea of less waste was appealing but I wasted more product redoing everything because even using a reputable paint known to 'lay down' (SW or BM), the capability of this unit offering that smooth "mirror" finish just is NOT possible. Is it better than rolling or hand brushing? Sure! Plus it's kinda fun. But I felt slightly duped by the advertised Graco hype (a woman painting/re-doing a cabinet beautiful. In hindsight, I'd like to see a close-up of that cabinet!) I think this might be passable but not anywhere near beautiful or factory finish. I am coordinated and have a good sense of 'feel' but ultimately felt this 360 vsp best suited for painting a large door / re-doing some outdoor tables and chairs from a garage sale or touch-ups that are "one and done". The stipple is very much present; even/uniform but present. Question: How does the Graco sized cup reservoir compare to your titan cup from your hvlp unit? All the "cups" appear to hold a similar amount of paint quantity? (Yes, I watched your 35 min kitchen video too.)

Airless sprayer, take you finger off the trigger after every pass, that should fix the air spike issue. Spraying at height or reach areas... just get a nozzle extender that goes with the right machine for the job, like that one doesn't accept accessories which should mean to keep it to smaller projects.

I’ve owned the 360VSP a couple years now and have used it to paint wainscoting and and outdoor accent wall. It was not very good on the wainscoting as the gun shoots paint in, for lack of a better description, bursts. This results in a zebra pattern, not good for detail work. However, when shooting outdoor stucco it worked fantastic as the zebra pattern disappeared with the rough stucco texture. I’d steer clear of this product if you’re planning on use it with detail work (cabinets, doors, interior trim etc). If shooting rough surfaces with a flay paint, i.e.: stucco or drywall you’ll be fine.

I can't imagine even the dopiest homeowner would try to use it to paint walls and ceilings when rollers and paintbrushes still exist. You can roller an average ceiling in what, an hour? It's not my job. I don't need to paint an entire house in 4 hours to make money.

I have 2 machines. A larger 3000 PSI avanti airless and the newer 360 dual speed (was DS on old model)
The larger machines like my avanti and x5 and stuff unless you're painting like 10 or more gallons it's not worth it. You lose roughly a half gallon on paint from prime g the hose and pump. Then more when you flush it.
So if you're doing just a room or 2 these are perfect. But if doing a shed or outside of home the larger unit is better.
Yes, your technique will be different for a handheld.
If you have the right tip (the newer handhelds come with paint tips and screen as well as stain (green) tips and screen.) And pressure on right setting you're fine.
Yes you'll have to slightly change technique with handhelds but in 5 seconds and a piece of cardboard you can find your sweep speed and stuff.

I have an X5. It's great for big jobs. But you waste so much paint filling the hose. And cleanup takes gallons of water (or solvent) and lots of time. This would be ideal for furniture or other small projects where the amount of paint used just to fill the hose of an X is as much as you need for the whole project.

The Graco Magnum x5 is twice the price of the Truecoat 360 in Australia. Then you need to purchase a decent length hose and have a much bigger equipment clean up time and storage solution to make up and load it with. I think you are trying to push this machine into what you are expecting rather than what it is meant for. As far as weight it is very easy to use both hands if you need to. Really I bought mine to paint some DIY garage cabinets. A shed I built and some interior trim and base. It doesn't take up much space when stored like the graco magnum I had that was lost in a fire. No hose to clean up and get paint all over when dragging it around. Basically for projects that are bigger than I want to use a brush for, but not big enough to invest the time in setting up and breaking down my magnum it is perfect. For the record that is most I need to paint fall into that category.

The muscles you work in you wrists and armsand even back when you are using a Graco sprayer with a loaded cup is not like anything else you will likely run into normally. It is exausting and you tend to wear out the muscles you normally use and then start favoring the other ones to compensate for those wearing down and by the time you are a half hour into the painting with a Graco handheld airless you will be sore if you are not used to painting with this tool. The strain on your body doesnt translate to anything else you experience excpet maybe using a gas powered hedge trimmer on a very tall verticle bush that you qre making a straight vertical cut on amd you have to hold the tool with your arms extended fully and in front of you. This position is extremely painful after even 10 or 20 minutes much less a few hours. I dont think a few hours is possible as I would always bite the bullet and just set up scaffolding on the 20 foot tall hedges I did as maintenance on a golf course because they were so long and the extension pole on the gas powered hedge trimmer and the angle you have to cut the tops of the hedges on the sides as to get a straight and even cut makes your forearms and chest and wrists and neck and back and stomach burn so bad after a bit. I can still feel it now. I always wondered if there was a better tool for that but when i realised that useing a 2 unit tall scaffolding on big all terrain wheels that wereb18 inches and wide was the way to go. Later on we finally invested in a snorkel lift that was smaller but anything over 30 feet we would either climb or call an arvorist to take care of like tall oak trees or pine trees that were skinny but tall and couldnt be climbed because they woulf snap and they would shed ao much and were a messy nuisance.

100% agree. Do NOT buy Graco cup sprayers! They are a eye-wateringly expensive. Graco-brand consumables and add-ons are also hurty expensive. Cup sprayers use a dozen o-rings and seals that wear out or corrode with use. Graco does NOT sell replacement seal kits! The cup sprayer housings are made of flimsy blow-mould ABS plastic rather than fiberglass infused nylon PA6 a/o PBT typical of power tool housing, so the clamshell case WILL flex and crack, and the halves WILL separate over time when the screw threads fail. God forbid you should drop a Graco cup sprayer. Graco offers ONE awesome thing: Excellent tech support. Patrick and Jack are Graco old-timers who've been with the company for decades, and have witnessed the unfortunate demise in quality.
By the way, Ryan's beloved Wagner sprayer has the same issue: Wagner does NOT sell seal replacement kits and requires the purchase of expensive components that not NOT need replaced simply to get the seals.

Outdated review. Overstating the obvious: It's not for big jobs. This is for jobs that will take up to 2 gallons of paint. Any job bigger than that, you would be better off using a regular airless sprayer.
This sprayer uses smaller diameter tips because the piston is much smaller.
I would highly recommend this sprayer for small jobs like bath remodel, painting a door, changing the color of one wall in your house. And a VSC model comes with both wide and narrow tips for paint and stain. So you can do fine detail painting on furniture.

Man-bun dude gotta hit the heavy weights at the gym. I’m an old 51 year old with arthritis in my shoulders and using this machine to paint ceilings might be a bit much too weight, but it gets the job done with fairly good results.

I have bought one of them and I love it. Does a great job. And I also bought a graco 19 going to paint my house and metal shed. Come on man it's not that heavy, I am 66 ,whats wrong with u . I think u need to work out a littel more or go to the doctor and see if something is wrong with u.

Shoulder impingement is a common issue with people in the trades (especially painting, drywall, and similar things). It's an overuse injury, nothing to do with strength. I don't even need to be holding anything to cause shoulder impingement, I just need my hand over my head. But the more weight you're holding, the more common it is.

Mine didn’t last no time. I am thinking of the Bauer cordless at harbor freight for jobs it’s justified on. Less than 200 bucks too. But this type of grace is a total rip off.

You don't have to be a professional painter to understand that this would be ideal for simple jobs, not freaking ceilings 😂

Glad it worked for you. It definitely has it's uses, i just think for an average DIYer, there are better more versatile options out there.
