  • We ventured into the Utah countryside to visit some of the best loved Land Art works of the 1970s, Robert Smithson's Spiral Jetty and Nancy Holt's Sun Tunnels, and check out the art that is happening there now. Also featured: William Lamson's Mineralogy, The Center for Land Use Interpretation, and lots and lots of salt.

I grew up in the SLC area and yet I was nearly 29 before visiting Spiral Jetty. I spent this past New Year’s Eve night there and was overwhelmed with joy at the experience even though it was only lit by the moon. My wife and I walked barefoot in the cold sand. Not talking. Just walking. It was wonderful.

I remember seeing the Spiral Jetty in the late 90's right after it resurfaced. All the black rocks were covered with beautiful salt crystals. It was magic.

The sun tunnels are my favorite as a utahn because most people here don't know about them. They are so simple and beautiful but so empty for 363 days of the year. The other 2 days people visit for one fleeting moment as the sun rises or sets, so 4 times a year it seems, people care about them. The rest of the year they are constant, and I love to visit them

This is an amazingly beautiful video! Spiral jetty and Sun Tunnels are some of my favorite pieces of art to talk about with my students at BYU (when I'm a TA for Interdisciplinary Humanities classes). It's art that you can climb on and through and over and it's a road trip away, so go see it! We were planning on making some sort of trip out to the Salt Flats next month and this gave us the perfect guide. Thank you so much for featuring Utah! I'm so excited to see more from this channel! Fabulous! I've always considered land art a kind of installation art (which I love) writ large, and the Spiral Jetty is on my list of places to go and experience. The interactions between our intervention and the surroundings, both physical and ephemeral (such as by sight lines or registrations) is electrifying to me, heightening awareness and being somehow wonderfully grounding. I'm also intrigued by Mineralogy! That looks like a wonderful piece. Thank you for another great episode!

I really liked this one. I'm from utah, and all of the pieces felt kind of desolate?? in a familiar way?? what you said at the end summarizes my feelings about being out in the desert and in utah really well, there are signs of human interaction and development and attempts everywhere, but the overtaking of the salt and water and sand is affecting. All of these pieces had the same loneliness, the same feeling of asking you to project your own quiet introspection into the deteriorating place, and then flip to the opposite, making you take in the history and the successes and failures of another time. I have more thoughts, but they are still nebulous (I say as if the previous ones were fully thought out :P), I'll have to wait. p.s. I could feel the texture of the ground beneath my feet in some of these shots, it was really transportive.

The Art Assignment well Montreal has the Montreal museum of fine art and musee d'art contemporain. The mmfa has a great wing on design which would be cool to cover and a very eclectic mix of contemporary work as well. Le Contemporain has all your big hitters but also tons of Canadian work that may not of been as widely known for the rest of the world and would be super fruitfull to explore and introduce in a video.
I like to recommend a Mural walk to people coming here since it's a great way to explore the city and see some beautiful murals on the way (use a bixi bike for this perhaps).
As far as smaller galleries go Concordia University has the FOFA Gallery which tends to have interesting shows going on, as well as the Leonard and Bina Ellen Art Gallery.
      Darling Foundry
      SBC Gallery
      Arsenal Gallery
      McCord Museum
      1700 La Poste
      And many more
I moved here from BC and the biggest difference I noticed was how saturated BC is in indigenous first Nations work, particularly carving, which isn't as prevalent here. Nevertheless, decolonization is one of the most popular themes I see being dealt with in Canadian art and so that might be an interesting perspective to view work here.
And of course there's plenty to see in Ontario and Nova Scotia

I've been out to Spiral Jetty many times, when it was underwater and when it was dry, and I'm so glad you got to go. But, despite living so close, I've never even heard of the art installment in Wendover! I'm going to have to go asap.
One piece that I was expecting you to comment on was the Tree of Life, a controversial art piece on the road between Salt Lake and Wendover. It's kind of a concrete tree with big round somethings hanging off it. I have to admit I've never talked to anyone who's liked it...

@@outofmymind3596 I know this is a very late reply, but I noticed that the Springville Museum of Art has some of Karl Momen's preparatory sketches of the piece while going through their collections. As I recall, they were actually quite lovely -- definitely hint at his architectural training. I'm afraid I don't have much more to offer than this, but since you mention you're not too far away, perhaps this might be a worthwhile line of investigation should you be compelled to pursue it!

Local Utah Artist here from maybe 10-15 miles from the Salt Flats. Yes, Utah is very pretty. It’s unfortunate that you guys saw only a narrow part of it. If you want beauty and it’s like April, hard to beat the High Uintas, also the Red Rocks in Iron County are quite pretty. Those “desolate” areas sure can bloom pretty quickly too. UT-202 lights up with sunflowers most years.
I would like to point out that those tracks in the end of the video near where it’s been flooded..... could be from up a year or more ago. There’s nothing “fresh” about them. With how far out the flooding is, they’d be deeper if they were recent because the people who made those tracks would have gotten stuck, or near enough. Tracks can last a very long time out there. Pretty much, just warning the non-locals who would like to visit not to drive out too far in ‘wet’ season. It takes a lot, but those Salt Flats do end up partially covered in snow sometimes too.
Very pretty photography, and now, I have like 2 more things to do next time I’m in Wendover.
