He was an illustrious Tabla player belonging to the Benares Gharana. The clarity, well-roundedness, and consistency of his strokes was a marvel to hear. He had also played Tabla in a number of Bollywood flicks such as Sholay, Basant Bahar, Meri Surat Teri Ankhen, Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje
and others.
He had been honoured with various prestigious awards including Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan.

What a spellbinding interview ! Although it was a radio ( audio only) interview yet the essence of Panditji's narration & Shri Masi's subtle questions bring the picture in front of your eyes. Very fortunate to have stumbled upon this interview as it is filled with innumerable, gems, anecdotes of Pandit Gudai Maharaj's ( Pt Samta Prasad) esteemed life. I have been also blessed with attending a live program of him accompanying Ustaad Vilayat Khan Saheb at Shanmukhanand Hall, Mumbai in the mid 70's. After being quiet for almost more than an hour where Ustaad Vilayat Khan played the Alaap in Bilaskhani Todi, Pandit Samta Prasad unleashed such ferocious tabla strokes/bols over a minute & half, the entire audience was stunned & mesmerized & what followed duly was a thunderous applause lasting long. Priceless moments & memories !! Pranaam to the Great Maestro !! Matchless !! 🙏🙏💐
