Royal Enfield 1140 cc Model KX V Twin 1937 short test ride after clutch repair and overhaul.

  • It is not so long ago I worked on this machine to generally recommission it and a ride I took on it over the Black Mountain and back can be seen among my other videos, a link to which is below. There had been some signs of clutch slip, although this seemed to settle down and I thought no more of it, but it happened while the owner was riding this machine and it got worse. So, back it came and I stripped the clutch, cleaned it and made up a replacement for a disintegrated friction disc inside it.
    This test ride was to check the job had been a success and, although some slight slip was evident, it was barely noticeable and after this clip was put together, I realized the clutch pressure plate spring screws were meant to be tightened right down, so this was done, the clutch operation still not being over heavy and the handlebars issue was also put right.
    If I can get better sound from the camera somehow, I might take another run, as this bike sounds great!

    85 year old machine, carrying on like it was a pup. Seems to cruise along at 1500 with no complaints at all. A guy could probably spend a few days doing thousand miles like that, and wonder where to go for the next thousand.

    Loved watching this old girl bobbing her head merrily along! Like a lot of the old "V"s ! Pull away in 2nd easy peasy, they could pull a house wall down if you asked it to! I think I would have to try to turn the hand shift into foot shift if it were mine (I should be so lucky) I think this must be one of my favourite episodes? Once joined anothe 5 lads on a 1000cc BSA vTWIN Pulled us all for miles along a local beach, before the days when they became collectors items and very expensive, This one was bought for 30 BOB (£1;50) Oh how little we knew!

    A thoroughly enjoyable experience to share that bucolic ride with you, Paul, the scenery is entirely in keeping with the vibe of the KX - it could have been in black and white and we'd never know it wasnt 1937...except for the odd artic and all those vans. Wish I still had my 1946 J - the frame was very similar, and the rear stand an equal b....to use!

    Back in the day a mate of mine's dad had clutch trouble on his bike .On inspection he found some corks were kaput ,so he replaced the faulty corks at the roadside with some shoe leather which worked perfectly, and never needed touching for the remainder of the time he had the bike !

    Usually its the Mrs that gives one a 'fly in the ear'! On camera there appears to be not much play at the lever end of the cable. I think Ferodo claim they can make linings for classics when the parts are NLA.

      They are bringing it back in the guise of a modern 838cc V-twin KX concept. Brembo brakes, hidden suspension to make it look like girder forks and hard tail. A claimed 100bhp to match the Indian bobber.

    Loverly old bike built like a tank made to last ,I could just see myself riding one ,full period kit ,piss pot helmet goggles & big gauntlets up to my armpits & flies stuck in my teeth from having a big beaming smile when riding it . On the subject of bonding friction material to metal , there used to be a company on the border of North wales nr Chester ,that would bond new friction linings to old brake.shoes . I am not sure but couldn’t the clutch plates or basket base be renovated by the same method ,or is the type of glue you used on the repair the same kind of stuff the industry uses as it appears to be holding up .👍

    Hi Paul, this is a lovely bike, I almost bought one of these from Ron Farthing (well known for vintage bikes, especially V-twins) £10K was extortionate (I thought) it was a few years ago and one of my big regrets was not buying it.
    Have you considered a helmet chin mount camera? this is what I use and find I get great results every time, also when you look around you at the scenery you get it all.
    Thanks.

    • @paulhenshaw4514
      @paulhenshaw4514  Před 2 lety

      Hi and thanks for the suggestion. I have reworked my camera mounting 'system' a little and may have cracked many of the sound issues as a result, as may be seen / heard in my forthcoming video featuring a 612 Bullet. I like the chest / stomach area for the camera, as many head mounted efforts seem to wander around a lot, especially when a rider is looking around and at junctions etc.

    • @nightster6378
      @nightster6378 Před 2 lety +1

      @@paulhenshaw4514 I did see that video, I use a GoPro Hero 7 and find stability good, even mounted on the front mudguard of a Harley Davidson 48 or RK. I don't do much speaking when I'm out and if I do it's usually a rant to myself or moaning, though if I was making a video for a channel I guess I would have to do some sort of blog. As for wandering around, I like to have the scenery in the video. I have considered uploading some vids to youtube not to build a channel but to show the area I live and the sound and walk around of my bikes as they vary a lot.
