      Thats the whole point of the Norden bombsight. It was build so that the U.S. bombers would be able to pinpoint german factorys from 7000+ meters altitute.
      The Flakvierling (Quad 20mm AA gun) did not have the range to shoot that far.

    • @prodem1065
      @prodem1065 Před 4 lety +47

      @@AJS86 the Norden Bombsight was extremely accurat. You could drop a bomb in a trashcan from 7000 meters if you realy feelt like it. The problem was that under combat conditions it was a different story. With potential damage to the bomber increasing drag, clouds covering the city and needing to be carefull so that the bombers would not crash into one a nother while releasing the bombs while flying in close formation the U.S. airforce usualy had a 33% accuracy on a factory size target while high altitute bombing. Still thats realy damn good and much better results then both the british and german bombing raids.

    My grandfather Grover W. Southard, (was stationed in India on a top secret clearance) helped engineer these bomb sights. Cool to actually see a working example.

      Or JU88 and Do217 night fighters with their upward firing cannons.

    It was claimed that with that bomb sight, you put a bomb in a pickle barrel, if only it were true , accurate, not so much , reality, that's why they eventually just started carpet bombing

    • @AJS86

      There was only one dedicated low level/precision bomber squadron.
      617 Squadron. Royal Air Force.

    • @PugilistCactus
      @PugilistCactus Před 3 lety

      They used carpet bombing when leveling cities. These things were pretty accurate for their day, but weren't useful if you weren't targeting factories or armor columns.
      They just figured that using giant bombers for precision bombing wasn't practical. And they're right.

    I wish I lived in one of those houses you flew over and saw on the scope. I’d screenshot it and get a high quality blown up shot and have it framed and tell everyone “that’s my house being aimed at by a B 17” haha. People would get so tired of hearing that story.
