NEW Noise Abatement Departure Procedure - John Wayne Airport

- The John Wayne Airport has recently implemented a new noise sensitive departure procedure. Here's how it works.
1. Planes spool engines up, and set takeoff thrust (usually maximum, no derate), as usual
2. Takeoff and climb at a steeper than usual pitch, as usual
3. Power is cutback at 800 feet, as usual
4. Pitch of the nose is lowered if necessary (which is most of the time), as usual
5. Proceed to BIKKL, turn left to HEFAY. At HEFAY, turn right PAPAU. At PAPAU, turn left LRREN, and continue HTCHR and proceed on the STAYY1.
6. At 3000 feet, restore thrust and clean up (flaps up). Flaps are kept down until 3000 feet when thrust is restored.
It's basically a left, right, left takeoff opposed to the left turn takeoff.
This is a new NextGen RNAV takeoff procedure. It is the first one in the country, and is still the only one. This SID is currently only used by Southwest. It will eventually expand to other airlines, but while Southwest does this Captain-Only departure that you need to be qualified to fly, the other airlines fly the standard NADP1 and NADP2 departures.
NADP1: Climb steep
Cutback power at 800 feet
Turn left and follow the SID (no left, right, left)
Restore thrust and clean up at 3000 feet
NADP2: Climb at lower initial pitch
Set climb thrust at 1000 feet
Turn left and follow SID (no left, right, left)
Restore thrust at either the coast or 3000 feet
I recall once several years taking a flight out of JWA. As we were in our climb, the flight attendant got on the cabin PA system and said, "Shhh! We're flying over rich people's neighborhoods!" The whole plane erupted in laughter!

I've flown out of this airport hundreds of times over the years. It is always interesting to see the faces of those experiencing this steep takeoff followed by cutting back the engines for the first time. I've heard people scream more than once.
I was one of those people who freaked out the first time I flew out of Orange County! The lady next to me patted my hand and said "It's OK sweetheart, this is how it's done to satisfy the assholes who built their houses at the end of the airport and then want to complain about the fucking noise!" I laughed so hard, that before I knew it, we were in a normal climb again! 🤣
Haha! I have to visit clients and prospects in Orange County quite a bit and always use SNA. I’ve never heard anyone scream, but the pilots always warn everyone before the takeoff. I love it. It’s a hell of a lot of fun.
The rich idiots complain about the noise, but I bet they don’t mind the convenience of having this airport nearby when they travel, as opposed to going to the much more congested LAX.
Stop worrying… It’s really fun. It’s like being in a Shelby Mustang GT and flooring it ... then you get to be weightless for a couple seconds.. When I would fly out of John Wayne on a MD 80, if sitting towards the tail, I could lean over and look up the aisle and think ‘ wow, the cockpit door is at a different altitude than I am’ lol .. the engine noise back there was horrendous.
I recall flying in an MD80 back in the mid 90's out of SNA. I purposely got a rear seat (I called a couple of days before the flight and asked for a back row seat). The pilot briefed us on the style of takeoff. It was not just loud, but it was rattling (I sat on the left window seat and pressed my head against the window). The guy sitting next to me was looking at me like I was nuts. But it was unique and it was awesome. I wish I could have taken off in a 727 or a 737-100 or 737-200, just for the extreme noise.

The Noise Abatement Procedure stated that the first steep climb it until 860something feet, which is the thrust reduction altitude, and then, at 3thousand something feet, the plane accelerates to its initial climb speed below 10000'. After the acceleration altitude, follow the SID, and continue like any normal departure. These NAPs are there because of the wealthy residential areas below the airport, and apparently there are quite a few Noise Measuring stuff on the ground, and if the pilot pops one of them, they're gonna get a phone number. And a pilot never wants to be given a phone number.If a pilot IS given a phone number, it will likely be to the region's Aviation Authority (FAA/EASA/etc...) and that......................... means biiiiiiiigggg trouble.
At John Wayne, pilots are required to do a Maximum-Performance takeoff, which means that we use maximum takeoff flaps, and full TO/GA power. And that, trust me sounds amazing. (from inside, atleast.)
Here's one difference between real world, and Flight-Simmers: In the real world, the law creates noise abatement procedures, but in the sims, people try to listen to the looooooooouuuuuuud sounds aaaaassss muchhhh asss possssssiiiiiiibbbbblllllleeeee.
Due to noise abatement procedure he gained 800 and climbed at v2 + 10-20 knots, hence why his engines aren’t going crazy. Then at 3000 ft he guns it again
Amazing because that airport has been there since I remember back in the 60's. You buy a house close to an airport, expect noise. Dont like it, dont buy a house there or move.

Because typical rich people think they are entitled and can control everything with their money (which it seems true, they did here at least).
They only followed through with the ordinance because it's a rich neighborhood. It wouldn't work over a middle class or poor neighborhood.

Back in I think 2003 or 2004 I flew on American from JFK to SNA, and back - takeoff on a 757-223 (or any 757 with RR RB-211s for that matter) is something that you never forget.
They have been doing similar procedures for years. The only thing that gets updated it the departure route, but its allways been full power to 800ft then above 3000ft and near the shoreline they spool back up and continue as normal

I flew out of here in 2001 on a small regional jet. I wasn't expecting to be able to hear the wind flowing over the wings as we turned out to seas and then back towards the coast. Pretty creepy for sure.

i flew out of SNA for the first time last year. I actually had no clue they did this until my cousin told me a few months ago. like ppl in the comments worrying how bad is it and is it scary, literally felt like a normal takeoff to me. ill have to fly out of there again and take notice next time.
Growing up we always flew out of LAX because it was cheaper. In 2021 we took a family vacation and flew out of SNA (first time) and I was also clueless. When convenient we fly out of SNA and the only thing we experienced once was a bad landing, we had a nice little bounce.
Its funny how John Wayne hated that airport as his home in Newport Beach was right under the flight path. He was a vocal oppenent everytime they wanted to add flights or expand the hours the airport was open. Then when he dies they name it after him. I'm sure if they tried that when he was alive he would have told then to take thier airport and shove it.

Hi, do you know what N1 % the engines are cut to when you go over the noise abatement zone? It can be a rough estimate and not exact as different takeoffs usually have different N1 settings (Ex. Higher 90’s at SNA and lower 90’s at other airports)

I'm on a 737-800 going from sna to ord (Chicago). I'm sitting bulk head so I can get the engines sound. I'm totally filming it. I've been on sna to dfw and they held the brakes at 102% N1 before they let the plane go. But that was before this noise abatement procedure

Cherries I know AA uses that type on that route which is honestly surprising. I don’t know how they get off that tiny runway with such a pig and fly it that long. Landing must be even worse considering those things history of overshoots on arrival. Must be subject to constant weight restrictions.
