My mom broke or rather shattered her left femur right above the knee. Shattered into 25 pieces. It’s was an open fracture. Did emergency surgery. Put in two plates and lots of screws. This was during Covid also. I was with her in the er so I was the only one that could stay with her. She stayed 10 days in the hospital and another four months in rehab. No one in our family could visit her there. She is so strong. This was 4 months after my dad had died, they had been married 63 years!! We really didn’t think she would walk again! But, she surprised us all….did I mention she was 81 at the time ?? So proud of her

That's amazing! Was that in the UK? I was just asking because I've had some pretty heavy duty surgeries for myself however in the USA, they throw you out as soon as possible, like as soon as you have a BM after major surgery!! And then maybe you get home health care for an hour once or twice a week for maybe a month or two....

(Prelude: we’re Canadian.) My Mum broke her femur right above her kneecap. She waited four days for surgery, was on morphine the entire time. They fixed it with plates and screws. She was sent to a rehab hospital and was there for four months (when her allotted rehab time was up). Her femur did not heal at all. She broke it in May, she came home end of September. She had a second surgery in January and they inserted a rod). After eight months she could finally stand WITHOUT broken femur pain.
Moral? If anyone you know breaks their femur DEMAND A ROD.

People need to take responsibility for their weight. I know it sounds judgmental, but obesity leads to all kinds of disasters: digestive problems, sleep apnea, joint problems requiring expensive replacement operations, Type 2 diabetes and its horrendous and very expensive consequences (e.g. kidney dialysis), cardiovascular diseases (high blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes), non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, various cancers, and worse Covid outcomes. ALL the world's health-care systems are warning that they're already overwhelmed and won't be able to cope with these consequences in the future, and it's not fair on people who suffer from conditions they didn't bring upon themselves when they have to wait in a queue behind people who could have avoided their ill health.
