Fray Bentos, The Tank that Inspired Fury

  • Fray Bentos a new high tech weapon at the time was a Mark IV tank that got stuck on the enemy lines. The crew battled for several days bravely defending from the German onslaught while under fire from the British who were trying to stop the tank falling into German hands.
Captain Donald Richardson, despite being injured, bravely led his crew to safety and they became the most highly decorated tank crew at the time. In recent years Fray Bentos' last stand became the inspiration for the story Fury.

I wanted to give you a personal thanks too. It’s not a half assed “thank you for your service” though, because you didn’t do it to get a thanks from us. Regardless, thank you for taking the fight to the baddies, making sure that at least a few terrorists weren’t gonna make it over here and by doing that you gave me a share of my freedom. I’m free to be an absolute useless piece of shit that does nothing until I get a job again, and I don’t have to worry about someone bombing or shooting my neighborhood up. A lot of teens and adults don’t have to worry about that because you were fixing Warriors, and those Warriors could bring the fight to them instead. I’ll join up with the CAF after I’m done with my service here in the IDF and later in the Marines.
I really can’t thank you enough. I don’t believe all soldiers are heroes because we both know a lot of society’s scum end up there, but I won’t let it stop me from thanking you for doing your part to keep us free from such threats.

I only stumbled upon the story myself after digging through some old family photos a few years ago. Apparently, William was a very quiet man and never spoke of the story himself - so no one, not even family, knew what he had been through.

Regarding to the name of the tank:
Fray Bentos was the name of a meat company which was located in the town of Fray Bentos, Uruguay (it's a small country in South America) and which it exported meat to England.
Interesting thing is, no one knows the origin of the name. The town was originally called "Villa Independencia" and was renamed to "Fray Bentos" in 1900, but there is no record as to why that name was chosen.
Historians are able to find the name "Fray Bentos" in military records from Spanish sailors in the 17th and 18th century where they describe the same location using the term but then again, no record was found as to why.
So... Yeah... Both the tank and the name are legends... And on a side note, there was another tank named "Fray Bentos II" in honor to this one, which also fought bravely but was captured in the battle of Cambrai in November 1917 and was paraded through the streets of Berlin on that year's Christmas Eve as a show for Kaiser Wilhelm II.

I wanted to recommend the story of Hiroo Onoda. He was a Japanese holdout in the Philippines after Japan surrendered. He fought for 30 YEARS after the surrender of Imperial Japan on the island of Lubang. He wrote a book about his experiences called "No Surrender, My 30 year war." and I recommend reading it. It is fascinating how he persevered through an American landing on his island, living in the jungles, and using guerilla warfare against the enemy. Not to mention the others who survived with him. He doesn't get the recognition he deserves and I hope you make a video about him.

The Bovington Tank Museum is more than worth a visit - a truly fascinating place. I took my 17 year old grandson there, and he was awed by what he learned. Incidentally, Captain Richardson wasn't the only tank commander to lead his men from outside the vehicle. In the mists and smoke of a dark early morning start it was often the only sure way of following the route marker tapes to the starting off point.
