It's because he's an actor too, I think. He knows every actor just wants a motivation, even if its just for single lines of dialogue, or a laugh.

The director wanting specific things from the performances is not a negative reflection on any of these fantastic, accomplished actors. And yes Bob is great, but we don't know what happened between the edits, which again is not a dig at him.
You saw like 5 seconds of him working. I'm sure he was coached at some point.

I love watching good directors work with good actors, such a joy the collaboration, even if these ones were just for camera. Now imagine thousands of hours of it.
Still cool to see this. And for the voice actors, i can understand why they might forget they did these sessions since it takes months or years before the film is ready for release and when they are called back to promote it and see it for the first time.

Directing the actors
During the movie when I saw this in the theater, one of my movie buds leans over and says, "Evelyn Deavor? Doesn't that sound like 'Evil Endeavour'? I wonder if that means she's the bad guy?" And he was right! It was right there under our noses the whole time!

5:18 Tell me this doesn't just look like Kathrine Keener the actor talking to Brad Bird the director. The really great actors in this video -- it seems like they're just talking behind the scenes, until the director steps in, and you realise THEY WERE READING LINES. Really good acting is scary natural.
(Quick story: I was once asked to do a non-speaking part alongside a very good actor whose lines were kind of negative towards my character. But this guy was making everybody laugh, and it was a pretty relaxed set, so when I didn't hear a clear "action" like I was expecting, and suddenly the actor slams his drink prop down on the table so hard the apple juice splashed everywhere, turns towards me with a darkened expression and starts to seriously raise his voice, jabbing his finger in my chest, I was so shocked by this angry turn -- literally for a split second like "why is this celebrity being mean and embarrassing me on this set?" -- I forgot it was all in the script to even react properly, and I laughed out of surprise! Then apologised to everyone when the director said "cut!". I felt so stupid, because he probably expects non-speaking roles to at least be competent, but to be fair I was a ringer. Actually though, my director friend made him do the performance a bit smaller the next time and I was prepared also, then everything went okay, I was able to be appropriately "taken aback" without laughing, and that was it for my bit. But yeah, I totally get what acting is now, and I can't do it lol)

Only for things like dubbing anime. Prelay is done before animation.
@@grantmortensonva exactly which is why original Anime/Cartoon always looks better as the voice actors expressions/ inflections are taken into account by the artists
Unlike a dubbing voice actor has to try and perfectly match up what another actor has already done which can be quite difficult.
@@angelicsailor1st it's really more than that. They're being told how to act while trying to squeeze the script they have with the limited animation of the lip flaps. They don't "just copy" another person's performance.
@@RicardoCon94 that's not what I said I said "match up" as in match up the cadence when speaking the speed among a lot of other factors I've actually done voice acting work in my youth.
Not copy paste someone's performance.

People that think doing voice work is easy....Just having the voice is is the easy part.....Having to do each line multiple times with being able to alter it to suit the scene (and the micro managing director) is the real challenge!
