  • This video is about the howling sound of Howler monkey(Alouatta sound) and its surprising facts. Their vocalizations hold several surprising facts. Here are some of the most intriguing aspects of their vocal communication.
Volume and Distance: Howler monkeys are known for their incredibly loud calls. In fact, their howls can be heard up to three miles (4.8 kilometers) away through dense forests. Their vocalizations are among the loudest of any land animal. This ability allows them to communicate effectively over long distances within the dense vegetation of their habitats.
Vocal Anatomy: Howler monkeys have a unique vocal anatomy that contributes to their powerful vocalizations. They possess a specialized enlarged hyoid bone located in their throat, which acts as a resonating chamber. This enlarged hyoid bone allows them to produce deep, booming calls with minimal effort.
Troop Recognition: Each troop of howler monkeys has its own distinctive vocal signature. Males within a troop synchronize their vocalizations to create a chorus effect, amplifying their calls and making them sound larger in number. This synchronized vocal display helps establish and maintain territories and also serves as a means of troop recognition.
Dimorphism in Calls: Howler monkeys exhibit sexual dimorphism in their vocalizations. Adult males have larger vocal chambers and produce deeper calls, while females and younger males have higher-pitched vocalizations. This dimorphism allows males to advertise their size and dominance to potential rivals and attract females.
Early Morning Calls: Howler monkeys are most active during the early morning hours, and this is when their vocalizations are most pronounced. They often begin their howling chorus before sunrise, creating a symphony of deep, resonant calls that carry through the forest canopy. These early morning calls serve multiple purposes, including territorial defense and coordination within the troop.
Leaf Amplification: Howler monkeys have developed an interesting adaptation to enhance the reach and resonance of their calls. They often position themselves near the edge of a tree branch, open their mouths wide, and press their throat against the leaf. The leaf acts as a natural amplifier, further magnifying the volume and carrying the sound farther through the forest.

Bro. I literally got woken up in real time out of my sleep, in Costa Rica. I thought there was some demonic possession of some sort going on outside my Airbnb. I shrivelled up and couldn’t even look out my window… I was up for 30 minutes listening, decoding , recording and finally I searched what sounded like “screaming dogs in Costa Rica” and these popped up. HOLY FUCK.

one of them came into our school and was afraid of the stupid kids who kept harassing it and screaming back at it, i thought it was 2 dogs fighting or something at first till i notice it was a howler monkey 😂😂, teachers took the kids away and the monkey stopped screaming, i thought it’d leave since no one disturbed it for the rest of the day but to my surprise it was still there the very next morning and was being disturbed by the same young kindergarten kids who was fascinated by this creature

Those kids are lucky it wasn't a grey langur. They are ill tempered and straightaway kick or slap anyone even by little disturbance. Even well built men fall down by their kicks.
