When I was fifteen about I started volunteering at an animal shelter. My job was to bathe intake dogs, clean kennels, sometimes clean spay and neuter equipment. Once when I was just about to leave they had me stay to help intake a pet hording situation. We got 32 rat terriers. All of them were infested with lice, totally underweight, and terrified. Those are just the ones that lived to come into the shelter. It's not pets at that point it's an addiction and it's terrible. For reference the Max amount of dogs we can have in a yard at a daycare is 25 per attendant.

@@Shellygrrl2573 I've kept working in the dog field for years and I can tell you animal crimes are not taken seriously in the US. Animals are property and it's very hard to get people to look into abuse claims. I still work with several rescues and most of the time by the time they even locate the situation and send it on to the authorities the animal is already dead. My room mate was a vet during a spree of pitbull pup killings. The animal detective was wonderful and did all she could but even if her hands weren't tied the sentence would be very minor. A fine maybe. Take the animal away so they get a new one. No one checks up. It's heartbreaking honestly especially considering how much harm to animals is a proven precursor to human violence. All I can say is everyone who advocates for animals is a hero. They certainly don't get paid enough for them not to do it out of the goodness of their hearts.

My husband’s mom is very similar to this woman…a hoarder to the max, but not the junk/knick-knacks collecting hoarder and more so the trash hoarder that never cleans ever. She also cancelled her trash pick up years ago and just lets it pile up and piles up…she has running plumbing though. She has lived with her slowly dying husband (hub’s stepdad) in the same trailer for 15+ years. My hubby and his brother several years ago stepped in to get things back in working condition, ripping up and putting in new carpet, throwing away a dumpster full of trash, clearing out dog and cat fecal matter, and patching holes and things. In less than a year it was back to how it was before. Ever since, they’ve refused to spend any more of their time and MONEY to get it in order because they’ve realized she’s never going to change her ways…ever! She stubborn and lazy and selfish. They paid for all the repairs and she showed no gratitude. IMO she needs serious therapy to work out her issues. Her house is in shambles and has several gaps and holes in the house that cause leaks. Our hope is that once her husband dies she’ll haul out her current trailer house and replace it for a fresh start and actually keep things in decent order. Hope is one thing, but whatever is reality is a different story.

@@katthefantastic In some of the cases I've seen it usually starts with a traumatic disassociation with human beings. For a variable of reasons they may not connect with other people butthey still desire a connection with something. So they fill that void with things or animals.
Sometimes extreme poverty that transitions to wealth can cause it too. Someone with an extreme poverty background like living in the slums gets it stuck in their head that they have to hold onto everything to survive. When they finally start to get enough money to buy things they don't lose the old mentality and they just keep buying.
Those are only two types of cases though. I'm sure there are hundreds of different causes.
I think its an important lesson for all of us to learn to appreciate what we already have instead of always pursuing more. The hoarder is just the opposite extreme of that type of thinking. I hope many of them can identify the void they're trying to fill one day so that they don't have to suffer the obsessive desire forever. Sadly, many won't ever find help like with many psychological issues.

I’ve seen almost every episode of Hoarders, and I’m not even kidding Shanna & Lynda’s episode is by far the _SINGLE-WORST_ episode of the entire series. When it involves bodily fluids & human biological material, that’s when it crosses a line for me, because it poses a potentially life-threatening health risk to others. You can also tell that _BOTH_ women have severe mental health issues in addition to hoarding disorder. I’m really disappointed that both their families called upon the show first instead of Adult Protective Services, because in my opinion their homes were _beyond_ saving…
*Edit: My intention wasn’t to come off as judgmental & insensitive-I’m just being honest based on what I’ve observed from the episode. It’s very concerning that their families didn’t even bother trying to find like an assisted-living home (not for their age but for their mental disorders) for them to live at where they’d receive proper care-both physically & mentally. Perhaps it was too costly, which I can understand to an extent, but allowing your family member to live in these conditions for _YEARS_ is completely unacceptable. That may sound harsh but it’s the honest truth. I really hope they’re getting the help they need today.

I helped someone like this once, only because it was the house of the mother of a girl I was dating at the time who had to move back in with her mom. It wasn't this bad, but it wasn't far off. I volunteered to clean it up and worked my ass off to clean up the property and the house by myself. It took several weeks, but I finally got it done between working a full-time job and going over and putting in several hours of work there each day. I can happily say that I don't think I would ever do it again. You can't help people like that because they don't won't help. Just like this woman, the mother was obstructive and hostile the entire time and refused to lift a finger to help or contribute in any way to the effort. It looked good once I was done but she immediately began hoarding and letting things pile up again. We kept the areas my GF had to live in clean and clear, like her room, bathroom, and laundry room, and I kept the up the outside property. Within months, the areas her mother had control over were as bad or worse as they ever were before and there was no stopping her. Once my GF was able to move out, I basically told her mother she could drown in her own filth if she wanted, I was done. as for the bridge I can potentially understand that, since there can be problems with it that are unseen, such as the internal concrete/steel breaking down over time, the foundations are sinking/eroded/shifting, the weight of traffic has increased making it a danger if too many cars+lorries are on it at the same time, an old design that after developments surrounding it changed wind patterns/chanelling making it now susceptible to being taken down by winds causing a resonance cascade (e.g. the Tacoma Narrows bridge in Washington 1940) etc.. modern bridges are insanely complex things once you start looking into them

I follow one in particular on tiktok who I believe got her start from seeing different people end up in the same grotesque conditions-mentally and physically ill people alongside overwhelmed single parents, amongst others, are the ones I most remember hearing her talk about. She approaches each case with the same compassion for the people living there. It just sucks that the hoarder in question has to give up their tendencies (aka, go through a mental ordeal of facing themselves) in order to actually be able to allow someone like her into their space to clean and dispose of filth.

One night the cat meowed too much for her liking so she got angry and said 'F. U. then!!' and released the cat. She never saw 'her beloved' pet again (I saw him months later, he's Ok now, a neighbour rescued him and I'll never tell).

expired foods are still the same. You just have to actually smell them, look at them, and use judgement. Expirations set are not facts, they are guidelines to protect the companies selling the goods and give people an idea of when they were produced. Many foods can last months to years after expiration dates, and meats can last up to weeks from their expiration dates. Did you notice loose produce doesn't have an expiration date on them? You can tell if they are bad by sight smell and feel. There are many factors that can contribute to something going bad, and you can have moldy cheese and bread before it "expires" without even opening the pack. Of course maybe through away 2 month past the suggest expiration date if it's meat that hasn't been frozen. Your grandma must have had open moldy expired stuff if you actually got sick, or as the other commenter said you may have just been used to another type of food!

The case with the moldy bread is that the mold spots you see is the fruiting body of the mold. Think of it like a mushroom. The mushroom exists to spread spores and there is a whole mycelium network beneath it in the soil. It works the same with mold there is a whole mycelium already set up in the bread. Sure, you can pick off the green and brownish/black bits but your bread still has mold in it just like if you were to pick a mushroom the entire organism isnt gone, its still there its just underground. As a matter of fact if you were to break the bread apart and look at it with a magnifying glass you would be able to see strands of mycelium running through the bread. Dont eat bread or really anything that has mold on it cause there is going to be mold in it
