  • Championship + Football Manager on PC is a very addictive game filled with tales of unknown players and their road to glory. Players like Cherno Samba and Maxim Tsigalko are legends due to their in-game exploits, but Tó Madeira might be on a whole other level. DETAILS BELOW

If you grew up with the almighty Championship Manager 01/02, you'll no doubt know the likes of Cherno Samba, Maxim Tsigalko and Tonton Zola Moukoko very well -- you could sign these players up and they'd quickly become incredible.
These legends of the game may not have done too much in their actual careers, but in this football management classic they're heroes to many players, loved to this very day. And while a lot of them have quite a story to tell when it comes to how their professional career played out, none quite compare to Tó Madeira -- the greatest striker of them all, and by far the one with the strangest origin. This video explores Madeira and the stories behind other champions, while also being a love letter to the most brilliant and addicting footy management game of them all. Enjoy!

I remember playing CM 01/02, I know it was this one because it was the first time I'd had a proper full time job and bought my PC with my own money. My dad walked in after I'd set it and bluntly asked if it did anything else! I tried explaining how amazing it was for about 15 minutes until I realised I wasn't going to convince him! I've played all of them bar the odd one when my anger got the better of me(It really is the only game series that can frustrate me that much!) since Championship Manager 93.

I remember getting a 15 year old regen called Literi in Championship Manager 4. His stats were - and remained - shockingly poor, but he would get 9 or 10 rating every game and score 4 goals in pretty much every game. I would love to see you cover as much CM/FM as possible in the future!

@@big_ry82 Agree, although I don't 'hate' them and can enjoy a game for a while if I can be bothered to get into it, it's definitely lost the magic of the older versions. Never been the same since CM became FM really. They've tried to make it so realistic at the expense of enjoyment IMO.

Winning the league with Kilmarnock in the very last game of the season on goal difference...in a game that finished 5-1 after being down 0-1 at half time.
I was playing Aberdeen and they somehow managed to get someone sent off 55 minutes in...this was followed by my defender scoring a hat trick and then when I thought it was just going to be "nice way to finish the season", we get 7 minutes of injury time and we bang in another two goals to give us the goal difference we needed to win the league over Rangers!
This happened at 2am and I woke the entire house up with my over the top celebration and I also remember taking a picture of myself kneeled down next to the monitor lmao pure pride!

Alessio Cerci [eventually played for Italy at a World Cup], Ole Martin Kristensen [Dribbling, pace, acceleration all 20] Lionel Morgan [injured out of the game really young at Wimbledon] and Kasper Schmeichel, who went on to become Kasper Schmeichel.

I'm playing CM 01/02 for 23 years straight (specially summers) and I never managed To Madeira. I love CM legends (Okoronkwo, Aghahowa, Duff...) but I prefer skip that signs, and play in a more realistic way. My best save in all that years was one with Sporting Lisboa from Portugal with very few signings, winning Uefa Cup/Portuguese League in my 1st year & Champions/League in the 2nd year, similar to Jose Mourinho in FC Porto. After that, with Chelsea not available I signed for Real Madrid (I'm a Barca fan) trying to emulate Mourinho's career, winning easily the treble. Chelsea was still not available, so I signed for Newcastle, winning League & Cups, but never manager to win UCL again. Funny to see how my 3-4 signings in Sporting era, following me to Real & Newcastle as a father/son relationship. They were Lee Bowyer (Leeds), Mark Kerr (yes, sort of a legend) & Nigmatullin (my best GK in the game). Maybe one day I will continue the save with the magpies.

I might have skipped that version. But for me, the most memorable wunderkids were Nii Lamptey and Freddy Adu. There are some that escaped my memory after all these years (I started with CM93/94), but these two are still very clear in my mind.

Any high quality youngster could be bought for £200k in 93/94 but Georgie Boy was a key member of my Forest team that won 5 consecutive European Cups. Used to buy Alan Fettis and Phil Gray just because they Northern Irish. They weren't that good - squad men - but I had Fettis (GK) taking penalties when he played and he scored the winner in the last minute of the European Cup final against Red Star Belgrade. Arjan Wisse was a great player for me in CM02-03, found him languishing in the 3rd tier at Blackburn when I took the job there.
What was great about him was that he was one of the very select, special breed who were fantastic players....but you would never have guessed it to look at their attributes. Indeed, he was my 3rd choice left winger throughout 2 3rds of that first season and on the transfer list. As is often the case, injuries and suspensions crept in towards the end of the season and I was forced to use this rather unimpressive-looking 19 year old for the first time.
And he ripped the opponent to shreds.
He continued to ripped the 2nd Division to shreds as we jumped late in the season from playoff outsiders to promotion certainties within the last 2 months of the season.
He ripped the opposition to shreds as we lept from early-season predictions of mid-table respectability in our first season back there, to once again promotion certainties with his 8.00 plus average.
And in the Premier League, he became a household name, keeping the team alive in our first season, and leading us to European competition in the 2nd. Helped us to a European final in the 3rd, and led us in the semi-finals of the Champion's League in the 4th.
At that point the following season, I have no doubt the team would have either won the Premier League or strongly challenged for it, but I did what I often do and got bored of winning all the time, and if memory serves I quit, left for the sunny climes of Plymouth Argyle, and helped elevate them from the 4th tier of the leagues to European football in 5 seasons.
Arjan Wisse never played for me again after that Blackburn stint, he never followed me to Plymouth, in fact I believe I never saw his name appear ever again after that.
I looked him up about a year ago, the real him. He never did much, played 6 times in the Dutch Eredivisie at AZ Alkmaar before running the free transfer gauntlet down the leagues and retiring quite early. You can find him on Transfermarkt, Wikipedia and other places.

Most of my ridiculously good Champ Manager players were the ones generated by the game, but the one I signed that sticks out as this type of Champ Manager legend was when I signed Julio Baptista in FM 2005. And the real life Julio Baptista was definitely a pretty good player, good enough to play for Real Madrid, but in FM 2005 he was a Zeus-tier player who was amazing at everything; he'd lead the team in tackles, dribbles, pass percentage and would score 25-30 goals a season from midfield, guaranteed. I've never had a real life player on one of these games be so much better than their real life counterpart.

I still play the contemporary iterations of the game, Football Manager, although I get my money's worth - I'm still rocking FM2013, I won't upgrade until I win the Champions League with the team I've taken up through all the divisions. Current save is over 3 years old! But Champ Manager, what memories, how many hours I sank into that game back in the day! But there were rules. Firstly, none of this starting out as a massive, rich, top division team. No, no, no! You must start as the lowest of the low and earn your stripes through hard work and promotions. Or get sacked after 4 disastrous games as was usually the case! And this is contentious, I know people love the idea of signing real life players, but no, generate a fictional database of players only. And finally, the true joy of Champ Manager was local multiplayer. Having a couple mates round and seeing who was the best in slow, elongated seasons that would last successive months! And if one of your mates left the room for any length of time, it was always at the risk that they'd return to find the other jokers had gone into their team and signed as many 40+ year old goalkeepers as possible! It just had to be done!

Used to buy a lad from Portugal called Claudio Oeiras. Thinking about it he might have been from the same club. Could pick him up for about £10k. Lethal striker at any level, pure goal machine. Easily my favourite player.
Can't remember if it was 00/01 or 01/02 that had the "Swedish freaks". Kalstrom, Mikael Dorsin, Kennedy Bakirliogu, etc.
I've heard there was some sort of error compiling the database that took a few years off their real ages whilst maintaining their current ability, so you were signing 15/16 year olds with the abilities of very promising 18/19 year olds. As the game goes on, they develop into monsters because of the way the player attributes increase up to the age of 24.
Maybe someone knows whether that's true. Also, Zlatan is in the game, usually available for about £100k early on (think he's at Malmö) and he's class. Sometimes he even ends up playing for Bosnia!

I ran into similar issues but it's easily fixed. The thing to do is when you try and run Setup load Task Manager, go to Details, find Setup.exe, right click and go to Analyse Wait Chain. Then end whichever processes are stopping it from running -- for me it was some NVIDIA thing (nvcontainer) but as soon as you end it, Setup should run. Won't screw up anything else. The game itself works just fine on 10.

What a game that was back in the day 01/02 was probably my fav. Loved CM Italia though as back in '94 it seemed so exotic. Interestingly I never signed To Madeira, I always signed Tsigalko, who usually scored 60+ a season. I feel the game was a lot more fun back then than it is now. I still buy it every year in the hope of rekindling that magic, but it's not been the same for over a decade now. Too much clutter these days for me.

I liked Italia too. You could sign a 16 year old Totti! Always good!

I'd never heard of to Madeira but that's probably because I've never read you need to sign this player threads. I always preferred to find my own no bodies and try to make something out of them.

In my opinion you are wrong that To Maderia is the best ever player in CM01-02. If you apply the latest patch 3.9.6.8 and play with Maximum Database then a young Greek striker called Alexandros Papadopoulos simply outperforms all players...he destroys teams with more goals than games every season and beats To Maderia...it is just he is not well known.

"Tó" is simply the shorthand for "António", doesn't mean "from". As for "Madeira", it means "wood". It's also the name of the island of Madeira of course as well as the archipelago the island is part of but, perhaps most importantly, it's a very common surname in Portugal. Gouveia is quite far off from Madeira so, yeah, it's simply a common surname.
Also, why the pronunciation of all Portuguese names as if they were Spanish??
