So goddamn frustrating how selfish and toxic Danny became. He became so emotionally abusive and I’m glad she broke up with him because he would have broken down every single bit of confidence Mindy has instilled within herself.

I have just finished watching this show. I really loved season 1 as it was funny, gal pal and coming of age drama. And the way they build up Danny and Mindy's relation was so romantic like you see on Romcoms. But from the moment they entered into this relationship this drama has took a turn. The way writers layered the reality of modern relationships into comedic storylines is phenomenal. With season 4 this drama is so empowering in disguise of a romantic sitcom. With little things like Mindy never lived into her beautiful home just because Danny didn't like it, When Mindy moved to SF for a program and Danny supporting her as if he is doing a favor, Danny never fixing his own problems and insecurities but projecting that on Mindy, mindy constantly feeling less of herself and always thinking Danny is the smarter one etc.
But I really liked how they took a break from each other. We all are toxic in a way. But things get real scary when we can't fight with our own toxicity and project that on people that are close to us. With time Danny and Mindy changed, their priorities changed, the way they used to see things have changed. I love how this show stays true to the reality that life gets hard, emotion changes, priorities change but with love, friendship and time things get better. You need to give it time. And it is hella slow process.
I would recommend this show for everyone who is in their late 20's specially ladies. And one more thing that we already know that going after your dreams and making so many mistakes make you become the best version of yourself as you learn from those mistakes, but this show really means it.

I mean everyone being toxic in some way shouldn't be an excuse for forgiving Danny and abusive people like him. Every person that has a toxic trait still tries to be better. That's what makes them worthy of being with. They aren't toxic people they may have a couple toxic traits but they try to work on it. People always think that if someone has had it rough growing up that excuses them of some of the responsibility of treating people like trash. But it definitely shouldn't. It's one thing to be empathetic of a person who's had it rough but it shouldn't be in a way that affects your mental health. If someone is abusive, you don't stay in the relationship and be knocked down. People like Danny are going to destroy you from within and then blame it on you. With them, it's never their fault. It's never about taking responsibility of their actions. Toxicity should never be excused. EVER.

As someone who got to rewatch all of it again last year and saw it through to the bitter end, it is actually painful to see the massive decline in Danny's character from literally the beginning of the 4th series/season and knowing it was because Chris Messina was leaving the show.
I'll never argue and not believe that Danny wasn't at times problematic with his old fashion thoughts and opinions BUT this trying to force her to get pregnant against her own will was WAY TOO much.
I hate they felt they had to go these lengths to break them up when they already had more than enough issues between them.

@@sebeckley That's absolutely fine to do that sort of story because as you said, its important to talk about.
I just believe that if a show is promoting a particular couple as their endgame otp, then I don't think the Mindy and Danny love story particular the ending for them is the way to go because of the horrendousness of Danny's actions which are so controlling and completely inexcusable.
As viewed by many, Mindy getting back with Danny sends a bad message in that someone could do something like that to you and then you make the questionable decision to go back to them.
Now a days with the way social media is regarding women rights and equality for all, etc, etc this sort of storyline is not acceptable to the majority so again I won't disagree about do these kinds of storylines regarding issues in relationships but it is just not tolerate for a woman to settle for a person who has given such behaviour that is considered very toxic.
Not a good idea to end a TV show in that way.

@@CJPDeQueen I think Danny after the failed marriage and the time apart learnt from his mistakes and realized that the he already had the ideal family, a child with the woman he loved. He destroyed that and had to suffer through that loss to realize what kind of man he truly wanted to be, which is why at the end, he was so supportive and understanding of her. People can change and Danny is an example of that, plus it helped that they had time apart because that time forced both of them to work on themselves and be better. It’s why they made sense, because they had both worked on their self esteem and their insecurities.

I don’t think Danny’s behavior should be excused, but this writing decision made a lot of sense to me. Danny feels like a real person, and now that he displayed such toxic traits, he can experience growth, which he does. I only wish that as an audience we saw more of that growth. Not to mention Danny has always been a little mean. We just appreciated his honesty and found his general grumpiness funny. This behavior feels like it’s very in line with his character. It’s just no longer charming. He doesn’t need to be villainized because in the end he manages to change and improve. Not to mention Mindy does a great job sticking up for herself. Some call it a bad writing decision, but it allowed Mindy to display true integrity here. I really respected how she handled him here.

They’re so wrong for each other and he’s not the best person to be honest. If he wants a woman with no professional ambition that’s fine but he meet someone who is passionate about her career and demand she change. Also, if he wants more kids this badly, he can always be a stay at home dad. Or maybe don’t trick his woman into getting knocked up. Sit down and talk with her about potential compromises they can both make. If non of that works, they aren’t with the right people.

A lot of the reason their relationship got to this point is on her as well because she compromised too much in the beginning just to make him happy when she knew certain things weren't ideal for her.
She was just happy to have Danny and forgot about herself until he really was pushing full control of their future on her.

His dad walked out of his life and his mum raised him and his sibling and they wrote him into this piece of jerk? I understand that Chris Messina wanted to do other stuff but c'mon was there no other way to do a better send-off or something? Let him go to a developing country as a Doctor without Borders or decide to be a priest then change his mind or go back to school to get his doctorate or sth. Anything is almost better than seeing his character turn to a crazy toxic person. All the character development went down the drain.

Very funny that none of the other doctors and Morgan ever treated Mindy that mean, they actually gushed over her like a cheering squad. I wonder if we'll ever get past labeling people as toxic and accept or act accordingly to their flaws? Danny's so called toxicity stems from the trauma of his parents divorcing and perhaps repression from being a devout Catholic, let's not forget gender conditionin, but that's a given. Conflict is inevitable and their relationship unfolded as it should. Props to Mindy, she wrote an accurate story here given the trauma that can be brought to the table when we love someone in a relationship.
