FINALLY got my hands on the *i9 2018 15" MacBook Pro* , so here's my *In-Depth Test, covering Video Editing, 3D Rendering, i9 Throttling, i9 vs i7 & more* !
Hope you guys enjoy this! Wasn't an easy one to make but I really hope this clears things up, about the 2018 i9 MacBook Pro, especially.

Would love to see a battery life comparison of this i9 using Fcpx vs the Dell XPS 9570 using premiere (with the 4k display).
For portable video editing both appear to be great, the Dell more powerful but the Mac more optimised for its specific software.
      Great video!

I'd really love to see a comparison of the i9 vs the 2.6 Ghz i7 model.

    • @ddxxbb1
      @ddxxbb1 Před 6 lety

It does reach 4.8 Ghz as advertised, that figure is only for one core performance and you can test it by running instruments app which allows you to run the whole system with one core by changing the preferences within Instruments. Try setting it to 2 cores ( in reality 1 core with 2 threads) and run the intel power gadget with cinebench, and I guarantee the clock speed will maintain 4.8 Ghz for one core performance.

I’m wondering if the differences in performance between the i7 and the i9 is because of the generation. What would be interesting to see would be the 2018 i7 vs the 2018 i9, because the jump is $300, almost 10% of the price. Would you get 10% more performance? Anyways great video.

Firstly, i think that there wasn't much improvement before and after the update with FCPX because FCPX is optimized anyway for the Mac, but it's good to see that the clock frequency and temperature is more stable after the update!
I personally have a Mac Pro 2013, which i bought a year ago when Apple updated the pricing on those machines. For what i do, it's a really good machine, most of the time i use FCPX and Logic Pro X. I do use Photoshop and Dreamweaver for graphic (web) design and it all runs more then fine. However, i did expect a faster machine when it comes to web browsing, it really can be slow at some times. But because this machine is more of a work machine (for movie/music production), i'm okay with this. I do hope that the Mac Pro that will come out in 2019 will be modular enough in the way that we can at least change: GPU/SSD/RAM. CPU would be nice but, well, uhm, it's Apple 😜 One can hate over Apple i do not care personally, i like both Windows and Apple for their own reasons.
    Great video!

I love this Macbook. It allows me to edit RED footage or any 4K footage with out choking. My old 2017 laptop would constantly choke. I'd have to put it on half resolution. But it was still sticky when moving the mouse on the timeline. Now the 2018 is much better. Unfortunately until more time passes it'll take time for updates to actually use the power the computer has built into it.

Salut Daniel, my problem with the new MacBooks is the “charging” issue and i don’t understand why no one doesn’t discuss it. It’s clear that you need an TB dock to seriously use an MacBook at a desk with external storage, display and peripherals. All the good docks continously charge the battery. Also the eGPU enclosures and TB or USB-C displays. As a long time user of MacBooks i have changed enough batteries to know it is bad to work 8-10h/day continuously charging and not discharging the battery. Solutions exist, but compromising maximum performance with lesser TB 2 or cheap USB-C docks and forget retina (LG Ultrafine 5K display is the last 27’ 5K display on the market, all the others being discontinued). And newcomers deserve to be made aware about this issue.

Very good review .. good job ! The main question remains for Jose who are looking to purchase a 2018 MAC . Would you get the i7 2.2 /2.6? Or the i9? From what I’ve seen you are better off with the 2.6 as even with throttling you can get stable frequencies of around 3.1/3.2 ghz exporting . So is the extra $$ worth getting the i9 compared to 2018 i7 models? I don’t think so especially with that case , you’ll eventually kill that i9 chipset as time goes on. Let me know what you think zonetech.

Rather buy 2 and use x hard drives for space. Way cheaper. $3400 for a 4tb ja crazy already paying $3300 for a 256gb fully spec one. Why pay $100 more than double the cost for a 4tb🤔😞🤢

The i9 looks like an incredibly bad buy; can you try something? I use a Rain Designs iLap stand for my current macbook pro and I believe it lowers the temperature somewhat (I find the fans go on much less). Do you have a "heatsink stand" to try the i9 on? Also have you tried manually turning up the fans to max while doing the worst case tests? Just wondering if we know we're rendering etc if we temporarily maxed out the fans. Wonder if this is going to lead to a 3rd party "cooling tray" solution lol

92C...I can't wait to see how high it will get and the throttling will reach after a year or two when the thermal paste becomes dust and the user can't replace the paste. Apple and others who release computers like this should be ashamed of themselves.

what about having boot camp and running native windows and adobe. Would the performance be better with adobe test or you do really need a native windows laptop? Nice work for the testing. It is what I call 'in depth'

Fun fact about that - on the same hardware, Premiere runs WORSE on Windows. It is better optimised for macOS in general, which applies to many other programs as well. macOS is a lighter OS. But Premiere still needs a ton more optimisation.

Great video, but your percentages were quite misleading. When you said "32% improvement", that 32% was calculated by (difference in times)/(after update time). To be more accurate, it should have been (difference in times)/(before update time) to give a result of a 16% improvement. I only checked this statistic, but I believe you made this mistake with all of your calculations.

In reference to the speed issues, faster processor runs hotter, also I believe Adobe is updating they software to be optimised for the 6-core i9 cpu

They already updated Premiere. Forgot to mention this in the video, but I was running the updated Premiere version.
